2009 ThunderChicken Robot

1 Attachment(s)
Here it is. We have been working extremely hard on this year's robot. Here are the specifications:

Drive - 2 CIM motors 4 wheel tank steer.

Intake - CIM powered floor load and human player bin.

Dumping - Powered by a 1 1/2" bore 6" long pneumatic cylinder.

We can dump 20 balls in 2.4 seconds.

This is not the normal ThunderChicken robot, but this is not a normal FIRST game.

We will see you at the competitions this year!

Paul

Re: 2009 ThunderChicken Robot

Wow guys, it looks awesome as usual. 20 balls in 2.4 seconds is very impressive. Great luck in your district events, we hope to see you at Championship!! :)

I did think there would be more rivets..... ;)

Re: 2009 ThunderChicken Robot

Hmm, it apears this picture shows the details that 254's teaser left out! I imagine that it also looks great in 148 and 1114 trim.

Re: 2009 ThunderChicken Robot

I think this is a fake. There's not nearly enough rivets for this to be a 217 bot...

Paul, are you sure you aren't just yanking everyone's chains? :D

Yeah... I'm seriously doubting the legality of them there bumpers... They don't appear to be fully supported along the length of the frame!

:p

Re: 2009 ThunderChicken Robot

I'm kinda doubting that that is actually there robot, completely different from there base cad posted earlier (you dont make cad drawings that spiffy and not use them). and it just doesnt seem 217 style.

call me suspicious

Or what about this 'ol post from good 'ol Paul.

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...19&postcount=6

I think this 2 CIMs for drive and one for intake is just another red herring. ;)

And, camera? I think we caught ya Paul. :D

Please don't let the other post lead you astray. We never received our sheet metal so we had to go to plan B. We had to scale down some of our original plans, but this robot can deliver a really fast punch with the 20 ball dump and wicked traction control.

how do the balls get from the bottom roller tothe top bin? all i see is one single roller, and not nearly enough rivets.

Re: 2009 ThunderChicken Robot

I personally don't think this is thier robot, but even is this is still relevent:

Imagine if a rookie team posted a fake picture of thier robot or said it worked using magic when asked how it worked. I'm sure you won't get the same reaction

This post sums up the double standard well: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...65&postcount=8

Edit: Eh, I probably should not have posted this in this thread. My belief is that its is not fair for some teams to post teasers or not answer questions while other rookie or 'unknown' teams do the same get negitive rep and 'run out of CD'. I still believe that, but understand that by posting in this thread, it puts the blame solely on Paul and 217, which is completely unfair. They did nothing wrong. I guess I should have saved this rant for those who are the ones giving negitive rep out. Anway, sorry again for causing a distraction.

First of all, why do you think it is fake? Second, nowhere does it state in the CD forums rules that we have to answer all questions about the robot.

And another thing: why are you so uptight about a so called "double standard"? Some people get uptight about the silliest things. Personally, I don't care how silly the teaser is I just ignore it. I think some of them are hilarious and others are stupid but who cares?

All I can say is relax, I thought this was supposed to be fun ....

What?

Sorry, but that was totally uncalled for. I'm going to post up all the "fake" robot pictures I want too. You're taking a joking comment and making it into something significant.

You guys haven't put yourselves on a pedestal but others have put you there, it appears. Just keep having fun, humor will return for many after ship day. Well, there's a good chance of it, anyway.

Paul,

You just have to get used to all the buzzkills around here. Some people just need to have something to complain about. Having fun would just cut into their complaining time.

Lolz.

Its a valid point about double standards, but its wrong to put out 217 on the spot when they don't do it to themselves. If people want to desperately voice their complaints, then make a ridiculous new thread or add to an existing related thread. Don't put teams out on the spot.

For example: "Those teams 816 and 1323 needs to stop posting pictures of their robots, nobody cares about them. I wanted to know how the frames were put together and they said 'magic' so I don't like them anymore."

*Reminder, I'm a friend of both teams*

I for one am suitably impressed. This looks like the sort of simple and effective design I've come to associate with the Thunderchickens, and I'm willing to bet they will do quite well. Good luck, and hopefully we'll get the chance to work together again this year.

That would imply that this picture, being of the robot, is assembled, wired, and all but finished. BUT, the ship date is more than 24 hours away, THEREFORE 217 cannot possibly be finished, THEREFORE this must be a hoax.

BOOM! How's that for impenetrable logic?

Wow. If this 217's real robot I am a bit disappointed... But at the same time I'm excited to see how they put the design into use on the field.

If it's not the real robot then this is by far the funnest teaser thread that I can remember.

Why? It's not the most complex robot in the world, but it probably works really well. 217 had a traction control system running just 4 days after kickoff, so they probably have that perfected and a lot of drive time. The CIM-powered pickup is probably really fast and efficient. I don't know how accurate the dump is, but it's unlikely to jam. I predict they'll be driving (often literal) circles around their opponents collecting tons of balls really fast, and then use their tcs to quickly pin someone for a dump and go back to collecting.

I wasn't making any attacks at the bot. I was just saying that we've come to expect great things from the Thunder Chickens. I guess I expected that they would've come up with some other genius way of manipulating game pieces (2008's grabber, 2007's 8(?) linkage arm, or 06's turrenting shooter of awesome). I'm actually a bit more excited about this bot than most because it's so simple and because I know 217 would never put a bot on the field that wasn't capable of laying a smack down on their opponents... I just want to see how they do it...

You nailed it right there, probably without realizing it. Ive said countless times, the reason the teams win is NOT because they have the best robot, it is how you use it. I can tell you that for as "awesome" as 217's robot was last year we were able to beat them at Kettering. How? Simple, their drivers werent at their peak, ours were. (Btw, this is NOT a jab at 217, merely using them as an example)

Imagine if a team has all the equipment in the world but no one trained to use it. You know, those CNC machines sure do look spiffy, they are pretty intimidating, but I would be willing to bet you good money that a single skilled machinist and a good engineer can put together a better robot than that team. Personally I would prefer to see 217 put out a functionally awesome robot over a aesthetically awesome robot.

That being said, I too call hoax, Paul said it would be shown when it was done, well we all know that these robots are NEVER done.
