My goodness, I knew there was a reason to stay up past midnight besides work.

I especially loved the moment at 1:34, why do I have the feeling I will see that move executed time in, time out, over and over, and why do I also have the feeling that it's already been done time in, time out. Haha!

Looks amazing as always Karthik, Can't wait to see it in action in person.

Is that an extra lens on the camera?

Everything looks amazing! This is the first turreting shooter that seems to consistently make shots. Great job!

Finally!!! a video of a shooter that works! That thing looks devastating, well done.

Mind telling us what type of lens that is on the camera? Im guessing its a wide angle.

Karthik, major props man. This is exactly what I wanted to build this season, except we didn't get the camera to track (still need to get it working) as well as you guys did. Loving the amount of chain and the hidden chain runs. Did you guys find a way of tensioning the very small runs. BTW, the floating sprocket seemed to work very well. Can't wait to play against you guys this year.

Re: pic/vid: Team 1114 - Simbot Panthro

I'm fairly certain this is what half of FIRST thought they were building this season. I guess we'll see how many others can live up to this one. To see this robot in action is mind-blowing. Another elegant Simbot design proves to everyone how it should be done. I'm loving the fact that this thing will be in the hands of one of FIRST's best drivers. Game on.

You can always tell the really quality robots, because they're the ones that makes you depressed.

I love you guys. Good luck in Chicago.

I knew it! Pause the Robowranglers video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCVLZFyEI1Y) at 0:39, and you can see a picture of the Simbotics bot hanging on the whiteboard! Huzzah!

Fantastic robot, a wonderful demonstration (yet again) of the optimum FIRST robot for the given game. The video also demonstrated why I think turreted shooters will do well this year... note how they can pin a robot and score into it's trailer. Actually, they just need to be near another robot to score in it's trailer, but you get the idea.

What's powering the shooter? That's an insane fire rate!

Re: pic/vid: Team 1114 - Simbot Panthro

Wow! That is super impressive! If it's camera code, it's dang sweet, and if it's an operator he/she really knows what's up! I can see 1114 have a clear radius of about 2 robot lengths at all times when they're on the field, you get to close and you'll have a trailer full!

Another amazing robot by the Simbots, you guys continue to impresses me year after year. You manage every year to assemble a talented group of mentors, who inspire smart passionate students to not only create a robot that impresses us all, but a professional TEAM that blows me away.

That's going to be one tough bot to beat with the best Drive Team in FIRST... but that certainly doesn't mean we're not going to try :p

More like... This is why I think 1114 will do well this year.

1114 is always the cream of the crop. 2 weeks ago we saw their robot and it was something most teams would be ecstatic to put out on their field. A week ago it was even better. After these redesigns it looks ready to dominate just about everyone out there (and note that they could probably win both their regionals without ever firing a shot from range).

This shows the amount of time and effort they put into their design. Nothing is ever good enough, and they strive for perfection. This mentality is what makes them great year after year.

Imagine how good they will be by mid April...

They sure did. Our sheet metal was done by our sponsor Innovation First at their sheet metal facility in Greenville, Tx, which also happens to be the hope of Team 148. After working closely with Teams 148 and 217, and seeing the amazing sheet metal work on their robots, we decided to jump on board. The entire experience has been amazing for our team, as it opened our students and mentors to a totally new world of design. The entire super structure is made of 0.063 Al, and weighs only ~16 pounds.

Well, we actually wanted to powder coat the superstructure Simbot Red, but we went with black to ensure maximum visibility of the Orbit Balls. Plus, it's pretty neat having a robot that looks like it was made out of a VEX field. :P

For those who asked about the lens, it's general purpose fisheye lens, that's commonly used on "peepholes" in doors.

Special thanks to all the teams who we discussed with and inspired us throughout the build season, including 148, 217, 254, 1503, 2056, 2166 & 2809. Part of what makes this program unique are the close bonds that are formed between competitors, and we definitely have these bonds with each of you.

We absolutely cannot wait for Midwest to play with all the great teams who are attending and to finally find out what Lunacy is really all about.

i think that in the center of all the rollers there is some frictiony material and the rest of the roller is frictionless so the balls that touch the center go up and the others slide to the bottom and are funneled to the center.

Amen, I can really relate to this after going through the 09 build season.

I can't wait to see 2166's bot. Karthik, any chance of posting up a pic of what they created this year? I like to keep up-to-date with former alliance partners. Many don't know this but a deciding factor in us and Beatty picking 2166 last year on Archi was who they were mentored by (Simbotics) so I'm curious to see what they pulled out this year. Wish them and the NiagraFIRST teams best of luck for me please.:)

I'll leave it up to 2166 to post a photo of their robot. I'm not at liberty to divulge details, but I can say that they stuck to their recipe of simplicity and have another effective and elegant robot. This year they worked very closely with us, building most of their robot in our shop. It was a treat having them around.

i like the camera tracking turret (:

its scary how accurate that thing is, and unlike dumper robots there is no alignment that you have to do... just jam your robot up close and dump away, 100% accuracy.

i wanna see that turret firing at a moving target :)

Karthik, awesome bot as usual. Too bad I won't get to see it in person, unless we qualify and raise the funds for Atlanta. 1038 has a bit of a fiscal problem that we are having to work through this year, so we are only able to attend one regional, Buckeye.

Good luck!

Wow, another great robot that will certainly be one of the best, if not thee best in the field. I don't know what else to say but that the rest of us at Midwest will have to sharpen our pencils on strategies to beat this firepower.

Luckily, for the rest of us, the robot's effectiveness in scoring only accounts for what in my opinion is about 1/3 of the formula it will take to win.

Most of the story can be deduced by watching the episodes of Degrassi that we were on.

Everything they learned, they learned from Clare from "Degrassi"....

I'm sure a serious answer is forthcoming.

I think she also named the robot....or one of her cohorts did. On this one, I'm actually serious.

Only if it means that we'll manage to qualify for nationals and then partner up with both "Devastator" and "Panthro". Actually I think my team could be convinced even if only got to partner with one of them ;)

This is another impressive Simbot. I agree with John that there are probably a lot of FIRST teams that thought that this is what they were building.

Great robot, 1114; I love the sheet metal work. :)

I can't want to see your robot compete this year, as that pin-and-fire routine looks deadly.

// Now onto a side note:

I find it funny that when most people see videos of 148 or 254 or 1114 or 217, they get scared or begin doubting their own design decisions. When I see videos like this, I see a challenge. It's like someone egging me on. As a result, it really helps me come up with better (although minor) design revisions. I'd really like to thank these teams for their inspiration!

By that I mean I see another full looking robot and not the bot that is pulling the trailer around during the video.

Yup, our practice robot is parked in the corner of the field during the videos. We wanted to run them both at the same time, but issues with control system popped up.

Karthik, that alignment of the balls is pretty crazy. How did you get it working that well?

Design is an iterative process. We went through many iterations of our hopper and ball conveyor. What we first built in week three is very different than what we have now. It just took a look of tweaking. We tried different motor configurations, sorting rollers, ball paths, friction materials and funnels. We'll be watching closely at Midwest, looking for ways to further optimize the solution.

I assume that camera is tracking and that the turret moves accordingly. Is that right?

If so, how well does it do against moving trailers? What's the range?

Great robot, once again!

6 weeks of dedication & hard work culminated on your own robot & thrown out by seeing one simple picture or video??
That's ridiculous.
I totally agree with you Art.
No instance of seeing one picture or a 5 minute video of someone else's bot is worth throwing in the towel & giving up on the whole season.

Of course, the opposite is true as well.
I'm sure some teams have seen (for argument's sake, we'll use your same team number examples here) 148 or 254 or 1114 or 217 & saw that their own team has designed something very similar & they believe that they have a foolproof design because of that.

Not so fast kiddies. Just because the defending world champions or other legendary & "proven" teams have the same mechanism you have on your robot, does not mean you, or even they will be the world champions this year.

It's a whole new game every year, & this one is no exception.

There are no guarantees who will do good & who will do not-so good until the rubber meets the road, or, more appropriately, the rover wheels hit the regolith in exactly one week from today!

True... but if Vegas had a board up I'd put some money on 1114.
A non-guarantee can still have good odds.

It's like someone egging me on. As a result, it really helps me come up with better (although minor) design revisions. I'd really like to thank these teams for their inspiration!

Totally with you there Art, I got the chance to see initial rendition of this bot a couple weeks ago and I had the exact same reaction. It challenged me to work harder on our bot to make it more effective. I am still thinking of how we can make our bot better, the robot is never 'done' there is always something that can be done to improve it.

Looks like it is a deflector. With the deflector in one position, the balls will be forced downward (possibly to hit a trailer at point blank) and in the opposite side the deflector will allow the balls to go further down the field. I am in the process of figuring out how to implement this onto our robot.

I'm gonna throw one out here and say it changes the pitch of the deflector screen wrapped around the back of the ball.

We're on the same page as you guys. Seeing the amazing things that teams have being doing this year with ball transportation and traction control has inspired us to raise our personal bar that much more. For example, I know that seeing and hearing about 2809's awesome traction control system made our programmers focus that much more. This is co-opertition at it's best, teams learning from each other and constantly trying to raise their performance to a higher standard.

And as JNo said, the robot is never done. It's all about continuous reevaluation and improvement.

Sheet metal frames for the win. 612 just switched over to using a sheet metal frame on our drive train and after seeing how much it weighed, we aren't going back. Now we just need to implement it throughout the robot for next year.

Looks good 1114! Looking forward to seeing this robot in Atlanta.

I think shooters w/ turrets will be more effective in later rounds because all the robots will be moving the entire match and having a turret will help a lot. During qualifications dumpers may score more because teams are moving less & no shows ect...and if you have a dumper and you need to be lined up right on target it may be to late in the match to catch up when you get the opportunity to dump your load.

This shows the amount of time and effort they put into their design. Nothing is ever good enough, and they strive for perfection. This mentality is what makes them great year after year.

Imagine how good they will be by mid April...

Would it be possible to see the different redesigns? I know I would like to see the process that went into the making of this bot.

Thanks for re-affirming a stance I held from the beginning. Offensive dumpers will get far in qualifiers, but once elims start, it's all about defense. Simple dumpers won't get far in the elims against great driving robots that don't stop moving. We went with the targeting turret and traction control for this reason.

This 1114 Panther bot will dominate the elims.

Nice looking machine once again 1114. I have a few questions if you don't mind.

What motor and gearbox did you use on your shooter?
What motor and gearbox did you use on your collector?
Do you guys shoot at one speed or does it vary depending on the distance?
Is the deflector/backboard on your shooter shooting the balls up, down, or parallel with the robot?

If you look closely they I believe they made custom gearboxes... Haven't got a close look at this bot yet.

I will probably be the first to say that I am not scared...

Formidable? yes, Unbeatable? no.

I think this year will most likely show advantage to alliance teamwork and covering your teammates on the field.

This is a fantastic robot though; impressive in design, construction and general workmanship, I don't think we could ask for better competition at GTR. See you there.

I couldn't tell you either but your best visual clue is around 1:37 in the video. I am somewhat curious as well.

We used two RS-545's on our shooter, and two Fisher-Price motors on our intake. Both sets of motors were powered through custom transmissions using gears from the KOP FP Gearbox. Our launcher is currently using a fixed speed. The hood for the launcher can have it's angle varied, such that it's shooting at any of the trajectories you described.

The Solidworks shirt? Or the yellow shirt on the right in the second picture at that time?

Or the red shirt on the right just before 0:32?

Or maybe the prototype chassis?
