It's the only FIRST event I'll get to attend this year, so I'm hoping it will be good! The NERDS are aiming for a win this year, but I'm guessing it'll be difficult if 39 and 60 manage to pair up again... It's hard to stop an alliance with such great teams on it! :)

We are very excited about AZ. It is the only regional we can afford this year, or for many years to come. We are going to Atlanta as well, but it may be a skeleton team. $@#$@#$@#$@# that economy thingy!

Fun practice day, we were performing better than I think any of us expected to! It looks like a lot of teams that were behind today managed to finish up this evening and will be ready for qualifiers tomorrow.

And yeah, Mark Leon is definitely here... we had the privilege of eating dinner with him at I-HOP and learning math!

EDIT: oh yeah, the qualifying match list can be found here.

Man, Mark sure puts on a lot of miles.
We saw him during week 2 in Oregon, then week 3 in San Jose, he's there in Arizona, and then we see him during week 5 in Hawaii.
As was mentioned, its not like he just goes back to the hotel and sleep all evening. He's always out entertaining teams or vise versa.

Enrique is with Sahuarita High School, team 2570. Great job, Enrique!

We did not tape the awards ceremony, unfortunately...I had enough tape to get all the qual matches we were in, plus all the elimination matches, but that was about it. I don't know if anyone captured the ustream webcast?

Anyways, it was fun, and we enjoyed working with all the teams there, and playing in the eliminations with our friends on39, and our new friends on 1165, thanks for the help! We continue to admire 842 for all they do (including being on the alliance with 1633 and 2128 that gave us our only loss). Thanks also to 69 for coming all that way from Massachusets, and the San Diego teams for showing so much spirit.

And a big Congrats! to the Coconuts for the Regional win! I'll have to find that picture of the bird...

We'll try to get some HQ video of the elimination matches up on our youtube some time today.

The students of rookie team 2840 thank everyone at the Arizona Regional for providing such a great learning experience. You have generously given us lots of great ideas to build a robotics program at our school, as well as plenty of great robot ideas for coming years. Re: 2009 Arizona Regional

This was by far my favorite regional that I've ever attended. Lots of competitive teams, tons of spirit, and lots of great people. Having a robot that finally functioned properly for the entire regional was a big plus for us, too! Our team members put so much work into this years robot, and qualifying for Atlanta made it all worthwhile.

Eliminations were very exciting... losing our first quarterfinal match made the rest of our matches very nerve wracking! Congrats to 842, 1633, and 2128 for putting up such an amazing fight. Also, congrats to the number 3 alliance of 2102, 1828, and 991 for pulling off such an amazing win in the semis. When 69 and 2837 paired up and put on such a good show in the quarterfinals, I thought we would be dead in the finals. Seeing such a great alliance beaten in the semifinals made us even more worried!

Major thanks to 39 and 1165 for making a great alliance! It certainly was nice not having to play against 39 in the eliminations this time. :P

I can't wait for next year, Arizona seems to keep getting more competitive.

We have some pictures of the event up in our gallery: http://photos.project1726.org/thumbnails.php?album=36

Regionals were amazing this year. It seemed to be a repeat of last year for us. We were picked last for an alliance yet again. Plus, we were allianced with team 39 for the second year in a row.

Teams 1726 and 39 were awesome teams to be allianced with.

I can't wait until next year. Hopefully it will be a three-peat.

Team 2102 had a fantastic time being really loud!

Huge thanks to 1828 and 991 for being great alliance partners. Additional thanks to 812, 2839, 2486, 1013, and 1726 for joining us in the noise-making, as of Friday, I thought it was going to be a quiet regional, luckily you all proved me wrong. Congratulations to 1726, 39, and 1165, you guys deserved it! Last but definitely not least, congrats to 2486 for the well-deserved RCA!

We hope to see you all again next year (providing we can make it out to Phoenix again) and have a great time in Atlanta and the off-season!

Thanks everyone for a great AZ Regional like every year, this game turned out to be alot more exciting than I was expecting!

Congratulations to teams 1726, 39, and 1165 on the Regional Victory and to team 2486 on the Chairman's award (for a 2nd year team!). Thank you to teams 69 and 2837 for picking us for eliminations and I hope we can make it all the way next year (maybe 69 will come back then?).

Also a thank you to team 842 for putting on the unofficial team social this year which was alot of fun. Without all the exhibits of the science center to distract students I think a lot more of the students got out there and talked with other teams (not to mention played huge games of hackey-sack and danced the night away).

Lastly, thank you to the teams who kept working all through Friday and even Saturday to make sure their robots made it out to at least one match. There were significantly more missed matches than I have ever seen at an event before and I'm glad to see teams who were having difficulty had at least one opportunity to compete with their robots this year. Hopefully next year we can get out to teams having trouble sooner in the Regional and make sure everyone has running robots come qualifying rounds on Friday.

Here's to hoping next year's regional is even better!

falconmaster 23-03-2009 01:33

Re: 2009 Arizona Regional

It started off slow for us, seemed like we could never get all three robots on our alliances. I love this regional, its home! With Karen's scouting system it helped us jump from 38th to 14th on sat and then ending up 8th while picking alliances shocked us. Karen's data gave us the best options to pick from out there and we showed how valuable it was when we gave our buddies 1726, NERDS a scare! But alas it was not meant to be. Eddie our Pit master held on to his 2008 UL safety award by winning again! Karen finally got recognition after three years of developing a scouting system that rocks! Judges award. I would like to thank our alliances Tempe 1633 and Cesar Chavez H.S. 2128 for fighting to the last against the number one alliance. Congrats to Betty Fair fax H.S. 2844 for making it to Nationals-Rookie all-star! That makes two Phoenix Unions High Schools in Atlanta! Congrats to The Coconuts 2486 for their well deserved Chairman's win! Keep working it, AZ needs another national winner in a few years!! To our comrades to the south way to go NERDS! See you in Atlanta and NURC!

Thanks 1726 for picking us and 1165 for completing the alliance to allow us to 3 peat. Yes the first quarter final result had a lot of jaws dropping but it was a great wakeup call to do a major tweak on our strategy. In the next match it was surreal with us blocking 842 for a change. .

The narrow victory with team 60 sitting out a match had me as concerned as that first quarters loss.

Regrettable that the no shows pushed some good teams/bots way down in the rankings.

Phenomenal match play everyone. One of the most exciting regionals ever.

Thanks to all that contributed to getting our bot together (including connectors from Karen at 842) . It was a complex mechanism to undertake.

To be honest, we were pretty worried ourselves. Out of all the robots there, none seemed to be able to hold us in place like 842. I am hoping that we are in the same division at nationals, so that we might be able to team up. I dunno if we can break out of many more Falcon Pins!!!:D

The regionals were awesome. Thanks to teams 1726 and 39. You guys were great to be allianced with.

Our robot had sooooooo many problems, but we pulled through. There was one point when we had mystery smoke coming out of it. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from, so we had to try to rewire part of it and see if that would help. It did. We realized later that the problem was that our jaguar had caught on fire!

Even with all of our problems we still pulled through and became regional champs for the second year in a row. We owe it all to 1726 and 39. You guys are awesome.

On behalf of team 698 I'd like to thank all the teams that helped us pull through this year. 39, 842, 2449, 1212, and our alliance 812. Without them we wouldn't have made it as far as we did. I love you guys and I hope to see you all next year and perhaps throughout the off-season.

All your help showed our rookie members what FIRST is really about, and I think that speaks for itself.

I have the utmost respect for all of you. You're all worthy of the chairmen's award to me.

Also a really special thanks to 39 and 842. We kidnapped your programmers for a good portion of the event. ^_^

We will never know if the "if opponent=0842 then Left_Drive = stop" would really work.

It will take at least a month or so to build the DVD's of the regional, but the matches have been uploaded to www.thebluealliance.net and can be viewed online or downloaded. The Bluealliance only hosts the matches and not the other ceremonies or awards.

If anyone has a need for any clips before the DVD's are ready, just ask and I can send you the clip(s) in .mpg, .wmv or .mp4 format on a CD or data DVD.

Re: 2009 Arizona Regional (Pictures)

I was asked to take the photos at the Arizona Regional.

I have added them to a part of my site. So far, I only have the award winners online... but will add TONS more photos within the next week. So, check out what we have and come back soon to see the rest. :)

Hope you find yourself, robot and team in the tons of pics I took.
Feel free to use what you need. Please give credit back to Di's Creative Edge, we would appreciate it. http://www.discreativeedge.com

View pics here: (keep in mind if you download pics they are HIGH Resolution- they are big)
