Team 2108 Video!! Powerful Shooter

Team Awkward Turtle's robot this year is INSANE!

This video shows off the high lights of the robot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX9wOXcfC90

The end of the video shows off our amazing range, but we now have new foam discs not seen in the video so it shoots farther and the balls always land in the same spot!

Features:
-Swerve drive
-180° shooter
-48 ft range (with the new foam not seen in video and photos)
-Dead on accuracy
-Use of camera and ultra sonic ranger
-Fast launcher
-Amazing drivers that can drive as well forwards as backwards...with the trailer on

Any Questions or Comments? See you at VCU!

I like that idea for the shooter with the really big angled wheels....that's clever, i never thought of that. How much control do you have over the distance that you can shoot balls?

VanMan 02-03-2009 21:30

Re: Team 2108 Video!! Powerful Shooter

We can shoot anywhere from right in front of us to our max shooting range.

jgannon 02-03-2009 21:31

Re: Team 2108 Video!! Powerful Shooter

I'm curious... does having a shooter capable of ludicrous speed have any negative effect on the fine-grain control needed for short-range shots (2-4 feet)? Changing your reduction to halve your distance would double your resolution for the mode you'll be operating in the vast majority of the time, but I can't really estimate how important that'd be.

VanMan 02-03-2009 21:38

Re: Team 2108 Video!! Powerful Shooter

What we have found is that, we can get it in the trailer at any distance, the range doesn't effect the accuracy. There is enough difference in the speed of the motor that the shooter can shoot at anything in between the min and max.

Unless you made new ones, those bumpers aren't legal. The plywood behind the noodles has to be 6" long, and can't extend past the frame. It looks like you just made the noodles 6" long.

VanMan 02-03-2009 21:47

Re: Team 2108 Video!! Powerful Shooter

Once again, we have legal bumpers and frame for the front. It is not seen in the video so its a little deceiving.

Thou shalt becometh pinned in eliminations.

That's what happens to all the good bots ;). I'm glad to see another unique design for a shooter!

I agree, though if they have a good driver one can hope they'll be ok.

WARNING! Tall, box shaped bots may be hazardous to your shooter.

Out of curiosity, what is your firing rate? That's a very neat shooter design - but I'm wondering how quickly you can cycle balls through it and maintain your accuracy.

We won't have trouble with any dumpers. We have a strategy to deal with them along with our drivers that are great at escape moves. I find it hard to believe that dumpers will be an issue for us.

If we want to shoot up close is has no speed up time so balls can fire one after another. With the longer ranges, it takes a small amount of time in between each shot but it is not very noticeable. If we used 2 fisher price motors to power it, it would be really fast firing rate, but we don't have to weight for it and we already used the other fp for the intake collector. To compensate we have slowed down the spiral to keep accuracy consistent.

we thought we would be invincible with our awesome drive train, but don't brag on it. we we where in the quarters we got shut down because they decided to have two-three robots to pin us. that swerve drive looks like it's too reactive. are you guys considering switching to crab in the middle of a match? even with the ability to use swerve and crab we still got pined. also tracking might be the hard thing. you will have to be dead on to make it and driving will be a pain since your turret doesn't move. at kc bots just seemed to attract to a large group that transversed the field. it's kind-of like team titanium 1986's robot which does a lot of the same distances, except with a catapult. they turned out to be dud's because they where only good for empty cell delivery. not as glamorous as it seems. good luck though.

The drive isn't too sensitive. In the video was when we were testing it and we were using different code and different drivers. Our drivers are great with the drive. Our turret does move. It is on a 180 degree turret. Thanks for the input.

I'll believe it when I see it. I have a feeling you'll be eating your words if you ever come across a dumper like 45, 71, 121 or 1625.

I like the shooter design, very unique. A big plus I see with this design is it prevents broken balls from affecting the accuracy of your shooter.

IMO, and I think the Week 1 regionals have shown this to be true, rate of fire = robot effectiveness, plain and simple. This is why dumpers have tended to be on top. How fast does your system shoot, say, 10 balls? You said speed up times are not an issue short range, but long range you need a "not noticeable" amount of time to get back to the right speed. I'm just wondering what the difference in rate of fire is for you at close range as opposed to long range. Again, if you have numbers I find those much more credible than subjective claims. A video of shooting 7+ balls in a row would be nice (much like 100, 148 and 254 have done).

And any video footage of camera tracking accuracy from 40+ feet? Thats a feat I would tip my hat to if I saw it.

Sorry for the long post, I would just appreciate backed up claims as opposed to hype. On all accounts though, please prove me wrong and blow my mind with how dominant your bot ends up being. Thats really what I would like to see. In any case, congratulations on a very unique design that I'm sure will serve you well in competition, good luck!

do you guys have any setting with your camera? you might want to look into having a laptop as part as your driver station (you can apparently have a video output only this way though (legally)) so you can have the turret driver aim at the target. to help him a gyro to keep it pointed in the same direction the the turret driver moves it to would be useful, so your drivers aren't fighting each other in the middle of a match. (if you've ever played halo 3 and have been in the warthog turret, same concept). robot tracking has looked nice on some, but it can be bad. that's why i suggest using the laptop.

I think robots who are good at empty cell delivery and are capable of playing D will be great 3rd picks this year. To me, that's pretty darned glamorous.

the long shot we had, had no decent drive train, so besides not being able to stay in front of the outpost, it just became a target for other robots.

Re: Team 2108 Video!! Powerful Shooter

That Shooter is definitely sweet and well built. I don't think you'll have any mechanical issues with hitting a target from more than 25 feet away, but I think you'll have a practical problem.

In Lunacy thus far, we've seen that most scoring action from shooters and dumpers a like has been at short range. I think you'll notice that too and play a much closer shooting game than you think. I doubt you'll have any issues shooting at the sub-5ft range, if anything that turret will give you a substantial advantage. But then again, it'll be nice when you guys can bust out with a match winning Hail Mary Shot or two.

So, don't let the CD discussion get you down. I think you'll do fine out there.

Has anyone tried doing this at a week 1 regional? I have heard that the Driver Station will not have enough speed to process the videoat a helpful rate. Now I know that the DS can process it fine, however the competition ports will not allow for enough speed.

After competing in the NJ regional, i can say that: part of the inspection is asking you if you have setup to do this, as it is completely illegal. i think the reasoning was that FIRST was worried that it would take up too much bandwidth, and prevent driver communication with the robots.

That being said, part of our control system was a Q1 tablet pc, which is used to display sensor and motor readings, to aid us in driving. The inspector was sure to ask that we did not try to send live video, only values.

I think we decided that live video feed would not really be helpful anyways because there would be too much delay.

wow great design and good bot

It is truly a small world by the way. I was going to Salem Middle school in Apex and would have gone to Apex High before i moved up north to Illinois. I am glad to see that i might have still been on a FRC team if i had not moved.

Very cool. We have a student from Apex high on the team. He is the valedictorian there, and he found out about the team because he used to go to our school. NC doesn't have too many teams yet but we are working on it.

That's simply not true. It's not on the inspection checklist, and the Q&A has confirmed that it is legal, though potentially not practical. It's always a good idea to be armed with the rules in case an inspector or referee tries to tell you something different.

Yup. The Force Team (1073) had a laptop set up next to their operator's controls that was definitely playing video live from the camera. I don't know anything about the Axis camera, but the video was in odd colors, but you could certainly make out the shapes of the goals and robots. It wasn't a fantastic frame rate, but it was definitely updating a couple of times a second.

A design like this would be great for delivering 4 empty cells in about 30 seconds:yikes: You would have to look out for dumpers while you do it, but that would be a sweet addition to an alliance. Maybe you guys can make a trip to SC next year, or better yet, have a NC regional;)

Great idea. You have gotten me thinking. We can have our human player directly put balls into our shooter. So we can face our corner, aim the turret, crank it up a little and drop the empty cells in 1 after another and they will all be taken care of. It wouldn't even be 30 seconds. I think it could take us about 7-10 seconds after practicing once or twice. We would have to be defended by a team so that we aren't dumped upon, but that could give us loads of points. Thanks for mentioning that, I'm going to talk to the team about it tomorrow.

Careful now, The players in the outpost are not aloud to stick any part of thier body past the plan of the "shield". Although still, this could work very well :).

What is the bot's fire rate, and at such long ranges, what is your confidence you can hit a moving trailer?
