The Red Alliance?

I found this while browsing the interwebs.

http://theredalliance.net/

???

Is this FIRST related?

Re: The Red Alliance?

At the bottom of the page it has the George HW Bush quote "It's the WWF.. For Smart People!" from last year's Championship speech, so I would assume it's FIRST related.. aside from that.. I know nothing.

It looks like it hasn't been touched in a while. Has a long way to go before it catches up to TBA. (I think we're lookin at a G14 on the blue alliance).

My guess is yes, it is FIRST related. I don't know what they'd do, but it could very well be. It doesn't look like it's been updated. If your looking to purchase the domain name, try clicking this link!

Re: The Red Alliance?

Maybe TBA could buy it and make a spin off site for FTC or FLL...
The Registration expires next month.

Re: The Red Alliance?

Yeah, my team owns the domain.... We had big plans to make a FIRST video sharing network, but then we started talking to FIRST and they said we would need to get every sponsors permission to put their logos and team members in the videos (which were obviously going to be in them) and then that idea just died... We would possibly have to encounter major lawsuits if we do it wrong, or at minimum tens of thousands of waivers to be signed. So for right now, we have no major plans... Does anyone have any good ideas?

Well Blue Alliance is video, maybe Red Alliance could be photos? Sure, we have CD Media but it could be far more effective to have a dedicated robotics photo sharing site.

I always thought it would be a good idea for the Red Alliance to be an archival site for non technical documents from teams. Chairman's, WFFA, Hand books business plans, outreach etc.

so, how did The Blue Alliance pull this off again
or maybe youtube
or SOAP
or... name any other video sharing service that has events archived.

i'd like the site to be a user generated video site, minus archives, like say crowd reactions, or something funny that happened during build.

"the crazy stuff that happens at the hotels, or during build (dodgeball in 04 and 06) are the things that make FIRST a closer community than any other competitive event i have seen before".

EDIT: or you could do the FTC/FLL thing, that doesn't sound too bad... maybe even VRC?

I rather like the idea of a robot picture sharing site. On TRA could you archive match vidoes like TBA does, only maybe faster? :D An FTC/FLL would also be a good idea.

The way that they do that is that they get the rights from FIRST for the waivers and then use them accordingly. The domain name will be up for grabs in the next few months, so if anyone is interested feel free. I have college coming up, and I know I will not have the time to make something amazing like what a high school student has the time to do. So if anyone is interested, just let us know and we can transfer the domain name to your account, or you could just buy it when it expires. Sorry we couldn't do more, but we did try. Kinda sad, but we just ran out of time. Life seams to just fly by these days, wish I could of made something cool, but I have to leave something for the future FIRST students to create. Enjoy everyone, and have fun. Thanks.

you guys could make a record website, winners, chairmans, woodie flowers, that would be kinda cool

Re: The Red Alliance?

I believe that we have found a new home for TRA, we are most likely going to transfer over the domain to the very successful TBA, and let them take over, as we do not have the resources to run such a website at this time. Thanks,

How about all 3? It would be good for a TBA similar site for those too (FIRST isn't just all about FRC)

Re: The Red Alliance?

Awesome! Something should deffinitely be done with this domain. I would really appreciate a better and easier way to view photos from teams and events. It would also be nice to have a different way to view and upload too, because with CD-Media, you can only load one at a time. Another neat thing to do, would be to make theredalliance a place for scouting data and theoretical analysis. I always get a little annoyed as well, when I view a team on the bluealliance and I can't see there current years robot!?!?!:yikes: It would be nice to have a team profile on there (brief), along with a compiled database for teams with scouting information to show and swap!!

The expiration date is today,
http://www.networksolutions.com/whoi...edalliance.net
so does that mean it will now be property of TBA?

Re: The Red Alliance?

Aww :( i didn't even know we owned it until now. I would have tried to make something out of it... Ah well, good luck TBA, may this site be as awesome as your current one!

Joe Ross 22-04-2009 21:37

Re: The Red Alliance?

You can't transfer a domain that is within 7 days of expiring, so if it hasn't been transferred already, it's too late. The best bet is for the current owner to renew the domain name, and then transfer it.

As was demonstrated with firstwiki.net, it can be much more expensive to get a domain name back then to register it or renew it.

There is generally a grace period where the original owner can still renew after it is expired.

As owners of the red alliance, we have decided to pass the site to a very dedicated individual. Carpenma will now have control, so if you have any ideas, please let him know. Thanks.

Re: The Red Alliance?

Just like TBA is supposed to be a Scouting Station, maybe TRA could include more detailed info for every robot. This year, we could've submitted the following info to TRA:

Weight:
Drivetrain:
Ball Capacity:
Traction Control (y/n):
Type of Robot (Shooter, Dumper, etc.)
Speed:

That way, when you go to your regional you can simply print out a team's data straight out from TRA and that'll make scouting much easier. Maybe teams can post 2-3 pics of their robot to give everyone a better idea of what it looks like.

carpenma 28-04-2009 22:28

Re: The Red Alliance?

That was actually one of the ideas we had on the table. A profile for each robot. A "Facebook of FIRST" if you will to provide a great scouting service.

I think I'll let you guys generate ideas for a little while, then I'll make a poll to see what the community would like most. So, keep them coming!

The Discobots (#2587) create a profile for their robot every year and they distribute a printed copy of it at the Regional (I think they call it Robobook... I'm not positive). In my opinion, its a pretty good idea.

Re: The Red Alliance?

I think the "facebook of first" idea is really good. Every team could make their own page and then it could feature many facebook features.

To mention a few:
-Status updates - build season/where are we
-Event Invitations/RSVP - Off season events, pre robot ship
-Pictures - Uploading and tagging other robots
-Networks - FiM, FLR, MWR, GTR, common sponsors
-About me - Robot attributes and things about the team

Maybe steal top X number of friends from myspace?

I think if you could make tra into something like that, it would be AWESOME

Team #67 is now in a relationship with Team #217.

[MSC]
Team #67 and Team #217 are now engaged.

[CMP - Divisions]
Team #67 and Team #217 are it's complicated. (Couldnt remember the exact verbiage used on this one)

I have to say that I like the idea of a "Facebook of FIRST". I mean ChiefDelphi is really good for technical information and game based info, but I think that a more socially focused site would be a great idea. You could include links to each member's team on TBA, their profile on CD, and their profiles on a few other social sites like Facebook, MySpace, or even YouTube.

We're almost there...

TBA links are in the CD profile, other social sites can be added by the user whenever (wherever) they want, and IM info is available...

I'd show up blank on any social networking sites anyway; I'm not on any of them. I think dtengineering's signature says it best:

I have to say it would be cool to have a website dedicated to Fantasy First games. Somewhere with the teams loaded, some basic info on points, the ability to set up leagues and do drafts on the website. Something very similar to the tons of fantasy sports websites out there.

Maybe TRA could be a home for something like that if someone has the ability and desire to do the coding.

FIRST Chat is 100% team modifiable... The editing feature is currently disabled to reduce spam, while the site is being made a little more secure. It should all be up in time for the FRC 2010 Kickoff.

the url no longer needs port 81 but still supports it.
