67 67 67.....undefeated...great bot.
here are some of the great bots i have seen so far in no order.

67-111-1625-85-245-494-70-1-33-1024-45-330-233-179-148-1114-2056-79-45
904-71-65-141-201-1918-107.
mainly Michigan teams because they're is no real need to scout out of state yet because of the trial we have.

my top are 1625 - no explanation needed,

2056 is pretty fantastic as well.

-Very fast, very accurate dumping
-Reliable scoring in autonomous, when they lock on somebody. Never saw them prematurely dump.
-Very fast, controllable robot
-Fast pickup
-No-jam ball storage
-Human-loadable as well as floor-loadable

For robots i have seen IN PERSON this year so far 1625 is at the top of my list, that might change when we compete at Troy this weekend. As for favorite robot this year thats a different story that would go to 148.

i'm a little biased in this decision.... but team 79 ripped up the Orlando regional!

there was one other bot i cant think of that was there that was also great

but we could score so well people had to double team us just to stop the madness:D

How has the team that currently has a 35-0-1 record, averages higher than 80 points per match, won two events, and has scored over 100 points twelve times only been mentioned by number once...

Top bots simply can not be mentioned yet, because a lot of teams have yet to play.
I'd keep an eye on some of the "late bloomers" this year playing this weekend for the 1st time.

Are we doing this by number of times mentioned like 06? I always thought that was a poor method. See I think one nod is enough for anyone, I would prefer posters try to be original and mention a team no one else has mentioned (and not your own team please). But hey, this isn't my thread

HOT and Winnovation are amazing but 71 will always be the BEAST.

45 will blow you away and they certainly ain't singing the blues when they are together with their IN FIRST brother 234.

56 won 2 regionals and has only lost elim 1 match (due to a penalty), not too shabby.

I'd choose Team 45... though 234 and Robohawks (can't remember the number) look tough too.this is from what i've seen at DC and VCU.
And the tornado bot looks great, but i've never seen a team hold more than ~10 balls at once, though many can. I'm not sure it that huge capacity is really needed, by the time you've picked up 30 balls the game is nearly over. our 25 hopper has never gone past half filled, and ive seen the same issue with other large capacity teams such as MOE and DOTM

I have to say 67, we were eliminated, but the sheer defensive draw, which they can still score effectively against makes the entire alliance better. We once held them for 25 seconds pinned, which was great i havent seen anyone able to do anything near that. i would compare them to 1114's bot last year, completely dominant.

You are too kind but no one should forget that it was 179's robot that got us there.

In addition "the Scoring Ninja" still has a few new tricks up its chain drive for Atlanta.

Oh believe me, 148 gets at least 20 balls at one time and then unloads in 5 seconds. They are definately the top bot I've seen in person but I've only seen OKC and Dallas; though I will say that 1114 just looks devastating but I've never seen any of their matches. Be wary of 148! They may just drive around for most of the match but if they get you. . .go ahead and concede the win to them.

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

I think this year more than any other, the world champions will not be the teams with the best robots, but the teams with the best strategy. Every robot in the field has unique strengths, and every robot in the field certainly has unique weaknesses. Building an alliance in which the teams complement each other while protecting individual weaknesses and understand their roles will be key to winning the game, not necessarily just having 3 dominant robots.

Tottanka 26-03-2009 12:03

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

I would deffinately rate 1574 as a top bot this year, though they failed to win Israel they dominated it through the Qualifying Matches and were the team to beat during Elims - and were only defeated with double D on them during the entire match.

I would not compare our robot this year to the 2008 1114 robot. IMO that robot was one of the most dominant robots in FIRST history.

We appreciate all of the compliments, though.

Our robot is good but, there are a number of other teams that are just as good:

1114, 1625, 254/968 (my favorite), 148, 71, 217, 45

Just to name a few that I have seen on video. I am sure there are many others that should be on the list.

As for defensive....469 is the most dominant defensive machine we have run across so far. I am sure we will see more as the year progresses.

I'm saying team 67. but a couple teams could take them out like team 245,1,1918,70. if some how three of those teams were team up against 67 there alliance team. it would make a amazing match.

I'm going to throw a vote in for 1507. A team that will not be at Championship. They were 12-2-2 at FLR (both losses came in elims), 10-4-0 at Philly, (2 of 4 losses came in elims vs 56 365 395).

Not too shabby for a team nobody ever heard of...

Thanks Maggie. 1708 played some awesome defense! I tend to stay away from these threads, but I'm gonna throw some others in here 1218 was great at Pittsburgh, 816 was great at Philly and there are many others that have huge potential when left to play their game...11, 56, 103, 291, 365, 395, 1153, 1507, 1629 & 1923 stand out as offensive threats. I'm sure there are some I missed and I didn't covered any machines I haven't seen in person. Good luck to everyone!

Our head mentor said this at the beginning of the build season. I completely agree with this. Teamwork is a HUGE part of the game this year.

67 looks like a VERY strong team this year (they were good last year too) we will see how they do at Troy :) Good luck!!!

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

1625 and 67 would probably tale my top spots so far this year. It is hard to tell just because the nature of the game makes it a little more unpredictable than previous years.

148 is definitely a top bot there release speed is impressive and I wouldn't be surpised to see them win their second regional this week.

254/968 look good as always. Their dumpers are powerful. 968 may have come up short at San Diego, but they were a top bot there. 254 looked very strong in silicon valley, and I can only expect them to get better.

After watching qualifications I was convinced that 79 was going to win Florida, although they came ever so close to winning and didn't quite pull it off in the end, they are still on my list of top robots.

217 looked good at Midwest, but there performance at MI Cass Tech was definitley more convincing as to why they chould be a top bot this year.

111 looked very strong at Midwest, there run at Boilmaker was cut short, but I still think they are one of the best.

39 Never had an insanely high score at Arizona, but they found a way to win the majority of their matches and I expext them to make a run in Atlanta.

45's performance has been very good this year, they can boast 26 wins in 2 regionals and one title along with a very cool propulsion system.

71 is a beast as usual (Pun intended) and they are definitely in the hunt for the best robot.

As for top shooters, 1114 has been mentioned and looks really good. I would like to add 1717 because they were very close to regional title and had the capability to control the out come of their matches. 40's auto mode is ridiculous and if if a couple small things went a little differentley they could easily have their second straight multi regional title year.

Biggest Bullet You'll Dodge at Championship: 2199 (Robo-Lions), great shooter (almost an 1114 clone) with a ridiculous human player. Went 19-8-0 in DC and Chesapeake and never scored below 60 points, scoring 100+ points five times, including 142 in Chesapeake (only the 151 points from Midwest is higher).

I definitely agree with what you said about 2199 being dominant, but 1114 and 2199's robots don't seem very similar to me (unless I misinterpreted what you wrote).

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

As with most games, driver skill makes up a huge part of the robot performance, but I'm not sure whether driver skill is something that everyone is factoring into their picks or not... That seems more like a 'top team' thing than 'top bot' to me.

Ignoring driver skill, 1114 and 1717 stand out to me as having the best robots this year. Both have very high fire rates, can shoot just about anywhere they please, and are beautifully designed and built. 148 comes in close to the top too, with their high rate of fire and rediculous amount of ball storage. Tornado is by far one fo the most beautiful robots this year as well... I could look at it all day!

If we are including driver skill, then I would add 1625 and 399 to my list as well. Simple and very effective.

Also, 40's autonomous definitely earns them a spot in this thread... It was driving better by itself than most teams can manage during teleop!

Ben Martin 26-03-2009 17:38

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

Our data had 2081 and 234 as the best robots at BMR. Both were strong scorers, though the nature of the competition at BMR made it so no single team could win alone. Between both the human player and the robot, each team averaged around 18-19 balls scored per match (the next highest was 45 at just over 14).

Alright, I agree with you that the robots look completely different. The person who compared them to 1114 called them a shooter so I thought the picture might be old. Now I am confused.

The best robot Ive seen so far was 1625. They control the match completely when they are out there. They go out knowing that the entire opposing alliance will be trying to defens them, yet they still score mass amounts. Ive heard great things about 67 also, but I havent seen them play. They have an impressive record though.

The thing about 1625 at the regional I've been to is that they were quickly noted as the best team there and thus were quickly ganged up on. They had an interesting mindgame with pinning, though; while they were pinned their HP tossed balls in their top and the robot didn't move at all, lulling pinners into a false sense of security. They're just a top notch team overall.

Like most have said before 1625's robot is amazing and is the best robot i've seen out there so far. Also 1114 is dangerous if they can load and get a chance to dump

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

2199 thanks everybody for the love though unfortunately we will not be at Championships. We are on the waiting list though it unlikely we'll be there because of how late we signed up. The alliance of us, 40 and 134 fell short by 3 points in the last match to win Chessie. We were a second away from scoring our missed super-cells with the robot.:(

I would like to nominate 40 for top bot because of their mind blowing autonomous and general skill at the game this year.

Going by skillage in driving, I'd go with 1717, 1771, and 816.

Well we have a 15-16 capacity hopper and we can have made a full dump with it, and made a second and sometimes third half dump. It is definately possible and helpful.

We've held 20+ plenty of matches. I've seen 217 have close to 20 as well.

Theoretically we can probably hold 50, but I think about 25 is the most we've had at one time.

For those I've seen in person, I'd say 1625 and 2039 - both incredible bots and top notch play.

I may go to Nationals just to see 148, 67, and 207 in person - very impressive.

This team 2338 has a killer bot when their balls don't jam - which I heard that someone figured out how to fix... :] Hope we get to see more of them at IRI.

sorry for being rather biased, but 216 [after our "traverse city redesign"] has been quite the beast. 2nd @ Lansing competition [thanks team 1 for choosing us :) , sorry our frame got bent nearly and inch out of square in the finals :( ] and just got FIRST [lol] at W.M.

1918 has a simple but beastly bot, thanks for working with us guys :)

85 has been awesome

i would have to say 85, 67, 1, and fleet only reason i pick fleet is because they are always pinning you into corners and they keep you there same with 904

From the performances i've seen so far i think 2056 is one of the top bots. They scored consistently and if I am not mistaken I think I saw them do an autonomus dump. They are a force to be reckoned with.

I liked watching 694 and 1155 in CT today. Great teams that seemed to score very well under heat. Too bad neither is going to Atlanta as of now. Also 175 did very well.

2056 yes most definitely! insanely impressive. glad i got to watch SOAP this weekend.

and thank you for now reminding me that it is absolutely essential that i go to Atlanta 'for fun' this year :p so happy to see so many unique teams do so well! it's not a 'water game' but please convince me that it didn't have the same intended effect =)

Thank you everyone for mentioning us. I am extremely happy with how things have happened this year and the hard work that everyone involved with out team has put in.

As for 2415, they did an incredible job of picking up for us while we were drawing 2-robot defense. There shooter is extremely fast and deadly at close range and there drivers and coach are very smart.

If I am throwing in a vote I would have to say 2056, 67, 1625, and 1717 are at the tops in my mind.

It is such an honor being mentioned with these robots.

I still can't believe that we manage to sweak by. Thanks 1902 and 1155..
1902 is insane at pinning thats a major reason why we were able to dampen that 121 alliance. not to mentions 1155 quick scoring that helped alot too

Being pretty subtle there aren't ya! :D

But seriously, it takes a really good bot to win two regionals (congrats again on winning Palmetto). So I am going to say that 2415 has one of the best bots of 2009. Along with, 1771, and what I have seen of 148 and 67.

Thanks for mentioning us,

our robot can hold about 15 balls in our hopper and about 10 -11 ish balls in our conveyor system. that's plenty to really ruin someones day if we get a full load out on you. too bad it didn't happen that way too often. great job to 217 and 67 for knocking us out of the elims at Troy. one team that was a little overlooked was 3119. though they are a rookie team and they don't score, they did a great job of playing def against us at troy, allowing 67 and 217 to wreak havoc on us and our allience:cool: GJ guys.

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

The best robot/driver combination I have seen this year is 121.
If they are not pinned for the whole match, you can reasonably expect two to three dumps of about 10 balls from them.
No other team has the consistent collection that 121 has displayed. When teams are trying to defense, but failing to pin them, The Rhode Warriors gallop around the field grabbing a shocking number of balls.

Based on what I personally saw at the two regionals I went to, (I'm not gonna count TBA/CD videos/pictures, there'd be too many to list if I did)

Best shooter - 1771 hands down.
Best dumper - 342
Best rookie - 2815

I'd add 40 to that list.

Also a correction from my earlier list...2056 owns.

I didn't watch Waterloo because my team was competeing, but after watching 2056 at GTR there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they are among the top 5 robots this year.

The top robots I have seen in person:
67-Just the best scoring machine. They are fast and strong and can empty a hopper quickly.
68-Big hopper, fast scoring, smart driving, they are tough to beat.
85-A very fast scorer that can quickly end a match if they get an opening
217-The ThunderChickens are a great scorer, they can blow a team out so quickly.
469-I am a big FAN of this robot. They are so strong and they navigate the field very well.
910-I haven't seen them since their first regional but their continued success and strong scoring there leads to me ranking them here
1918-I have seen this team grow over 3 events, they score lots fast, nobody picks up balls better

Teams I have seen online
71, 111, 148, 254, 1114, 1625

I would have to say that 67, 85, 216 (Great defense and driving), 504, 904 were some of the toughest competitors that we had at WMD and would personally like to thank them for all the professionalism that they showed us at GVSU. Sorry if I forgot any other heavy hitters at WMD.:o

Thank you for mentioning us. We gave it all we had in that competition. When we lost in the semis at wayne state, we had a feeling that we would bounce back with a win at Troy. The funny thing is that I told my teammates that it would be like so cool if we were teamed with 67 and 217. We would take care of defense and they would score. And look it actually happened. I really hope that teams could stop overlooking us because if you search 3119 on this website. You would see that teams are actually believing that we are the best defensive team in the state of michigan. I also been receiving kudos from other teams and volunteers that i was the best human player out there. I was told that i made more super cells than anyone else. Well thank you again and i will see you this week at EMU!!!!!

I'd have to say 1717 is the best I've seen. They went undefeated at Sacramento. We lost by 6(?) points in the first semifinal match against them, but when our elevator malfunctioned in the second match we got smashed.

What about best gravity dumpers? I think they'll be the best 2nd round picks in Atlanta, if not, some may be captains.

I don't know of many others but I'm putting ourselves up for that one.

11 (mind you we're one of the few that can stop our dump in the middle of scoring), 316, 342?- They were gravity dump right? Me thinks...

AGREED!!!

Some of the best west coast teams throwing up some huge numbers:
254(Cheesy Poofs)
968(RAWC)
1538(The Holy Cows)
330(Beach Bots)
987(HighRollers)
1622(Spyder)
1717(Penguineers)
1388(Eagle Robotics)
973(Greybots)
1266(The Devil Duckies)
Yes, I am including my team because we have finished in the semifinals in both our regionals and were seeded 2nd at the Vegas regional with a 8-1 record. With some midifications, our robot is now a very effective scoring robot. Our team isn't known for its robot, but this year we are going to be.
399(Eagle Robotics) How could i forget such a dominant robot? I don't know :)

All these teams are capable of scoring over 20 balls in a match very easily, most likely more if given the chance. These teams are sure to be in Atlanta(except 330 and 1388 : ( I believe) and are sure to be a force in any divison.

My favorite rookie teams so far have been 3006 and 3009(both competed in Vegas). 3006 was an effective scoring robot that lead an alliance to the finals and 3009 had an effective defensive/super-cell gathering robot and also recieved the Rookie All-star award.

I'd disagree, but I also think these "classifications" are pretty stupid.
If so, then 234 and 2068 aren't gravity dumpers either (both also use similar scoring methods).

Re: Top Bots for 2009?

I used OPRNet to throw the rankings for all the regionals into a spreadsheet, and sorted by OPR. These numbers are for one competition each; I don't have full-season numbers (yet).
OPR can be interpreted as a team's average contribution to their alliance's score; these numbers only include qualifying matches (afaik).
Top 25 is arbitrary.
Code:

Team        OPR        SAA        PM        RPI        Regional        Result
1        71        63.55        13.69        49.86        0.54        Midwest                Loss

21        188        43.64        23.98        19.66        0.54        Greater Toronto        Loss
22        395        43.35        9.06        34.29        0.5        Philadelphia        Win
23        1625        43.32        14.14        29.18        0.55        Wisconsin        Win
24        1218        43.22        12.76        30.47        0.54        Pittsburgh        Win

- 71 stands out beyond the rest, though it's possible their high OPR there is a bit boosted by inconsistencies in their alliance's behavior. Their next appearance is 37.98 OPR, placing 59th on this list
- 67's dominance is supported not just by their top notch OPR appearing three times, but also by their consistently high RPI. They had to play tough teams.
- 67 (#2,7,17), 188 (#3,21), 399 (#4,11), 694 (#6,12), 1625 (#10, 23), 2056 (#9,16) appeared in the top 25 OPR multiple times.
Some slightly off topic statistics:
- 18 different teams appeared in the top 25 OPR.
- After these performances high scoring performances, 12/25 went on to win the regional.
- 13/18 teams will be going to Atlanta (Assuming usfirst.org's championship team list is currently up to date). 103, 694, 968, 1279, 2199 will not be there.
