Curie 2009!
So here's the Curie division of 2009! (The page wasn't up yet, sorry)
1 27 49 60 68 70 75 79 131 141 175 188 190 217 236 245 247 254 263 271 287 329 337 341 346 375 395 399 499 538 597 668 766 816 830 894 904 922 930 1013 1024 1089 1099 1108 1165 1287 1288 1305 1323 1425 1429 1502 1519 1527 1566 1577 1622 1675 1731 1747 1771 1796 1806 1893 1927 1983 2039 2173 2185 2194 2443 2500 2520 2590 2621 2635 2767 2791 2809 2815 2834 2877 2884 2992 3010 3105 3115 Looks like fun! See you all there! |
Re: Welcome to Curie 2009!
Curieeee is where it's at this year.
Glad to see 816 with us here, I wanted the chance to drive against them... Or with them. ;) THunder chickens too. I had fun playing against them last year, they gave us "The Team That Fried Us" award because of some major defense in quallifying. Heh. I can't wait... Time to start scouting. I'll have video of us uploaded later today. Both of our regionals weren't webcast, so we're relatively low on the radar. Not how I want to go into it. Hopefully we'll make a good preshow... Then see you all at the real thing. Upon further investigation, 254... 1771... 79.... And I'm sure tons of teams slipping my mind. This is going to be a fun division. |
Re: Welcome to Curie 2009!
1089 is excited to be in curie! looks like to be an awesome competition!!!

Wow all great teams that I look forward to playing with and against next week. Curie is going to be a blast! |
Re: Curie 2009!
This is going to be one fun division to play in.
1519 is just about ready |
Re: Curie 2009!
Looking again at that depth another way...there are going to be at least 13 regional/district winners who won't even make it to the playoffs (37 different champions - 24 playoff teams).
Even with her brand new scoring system upgrade, Miss Daisy is shaking in her boots! EDIT: Sorry, 36 unique winners. So 12 teams left out. |
Re: Curie 2009!
Nice group, looking forward to playing with 1, 254 and 1024. 217 caused me to jump when I saw them.

Re: Curie 2009!
Team 79 is so excited!!
It looks like this field will be fun :) |

Curie is the place to be!! We anticipate making a bunch of new friends from all over FIRST!!! If anyone is compiling the information regarding the regional winners We were the #1 pick by the #1 Alliance captain in both Portland and Seattle. Thanks to 1318 and 2635 we were able to be part of the Oregon winning Alliance. See you all in about a week!! I can't believe it!!! |
Re: Curie 2009!
Winner breakdown from the 1114 database:
68 seeded 14th and was the 1st pick. 70 seeded 5th and was the 1st pick 79 seeded 2nd and was the #2 alliance captain 175 seeded 6th and was the 4th pick 188 seeded 3rd and was the 1st pick 190 seeded 5th and was the 2nd pick 217 seeded 2nd, 1st, and 1st, and was the 1st pick, #1 captain, and #1 captain 245 seeded 1st and was the #1 alliance captain 247 seeded 17th and was the 16th pick (second round) 254 seeded 9th and was the 1st pick 287 seeded 5th and was the #4 alliance captain 341 seeded 7th and was the 4th pick 346 seeded 2nd and was the #2 alliance captain 395 seeded 10th and was the #6 alliance captain 399 seeded 1st and was the #1 alliance captain 668 seeded 18th and was the 1st pick 1013 seeded 27th and was the 14th pick (second round) 1024 seeded 33rd and was the 13th pick (second round) 1099 seeded 28th and was the 15th pick (second round) 1165 seeded 21st and was the 16th pick (second round) 1425 seeded 2nd and was the #2 alliance captain 1622 seeded 3rd and was the #3 alliance captain 1675 seeded 27th and was the 14th pick (second round) 1747 seeded 1st and was the #1 alliance captain 1771 seeded 3rd and was the #3 alliance captain 1796 seeded 23rd and was the 13th pick (second round) 1806 seeded 1st and was the #1 alliance captain 1893 seeded 13th and was the 12th pick (second round) 1983 seeded 19th and was the 1st pick 2039 seeded 1st and was the #1 alliance captain 2173 seeded 28th and was the 16th pick (second round) 2185 seeded 26th and 46th and was the 16th pick and 16th pick (second round x2) 2194 seeded 32nd and was the 16th pick (second round) 2443 seeded 22nd and was the 15th pick (second round) 2621 seeded 19th and was the 13th pick (second round) 2635 seeded 22nd and was the 16th pick (second round) 2815 was a finalist rather than a winner (my mistake!) So a total of 15 of our 39 wins were as a second round pick (38.5%). Consider that, naturally, 33% of all regional winners are second round picks :) . Also note that only 395 and 1893 won on anything but one of the top 4 alliances. |

I'm really excited to see the depth of this field, and to see a bunch of old friends. See y'all at the big show! |
Re: Curie 2009!
This should be a very competitive field to be on. Glad to see we are with some of the teams I was hoping to be in a Division with because they seem cool and have some skill. :).

Sh... I don't know her name. The usual lady MC, Shaniqua maybe? did it last year.
I'm betting they switch Mark Leon to it though, he usually follows 254, and there was some drama with that last year I believe. Whoever we get should be fun. I personally like Blair. =p |

Re: Curie 2009!
The Skunks have done some slight alterations on our swerve/crab drive. We added a different type of encoder that allows our software algorithms to work even better and make us even harder to track down and gives us even better maneuverability.
This could be fun... Good luck to everyone else on Curie!! We look forward to making new friends and having a great competition.!! |

Re: Curie 2009!
We learned from last year.
last year, on Thursday alone we tore off our arm that we had re designed like 8 time and replaced it with a launcher that worked quite well this year, with a hopper and conveyor system that can pick up from the ground and human player and holds 25 balls on average, a dumper that can pump balls out 2 at a time, a empty cell holder that works but we haven't had much use for, traction control that hasn't been giving us any trouble, and 8 functional auton codes that work in all of the positions; we haven't had much to twiddle with... to tell the truth, the pit crew(including me) have been bored... if anyone needs help, come ask us(we are really easy to find, just look for our giant banner and flags hanging off of our tool box) spare parts, tools, stock; we usually have it all:cool: |
Re: Curie 2009!
1771 has primarily just been doing code improvements, and getting in driving time and human player practice. Most hardware changes are pretty minor, only one that jumps to mind is some new heat sinks on our Fisher-Price's to help with overheating. We haven't had any overheating problems yet, but we don't want to start at championships.
|
Re: Curie 2009!
As far as I know, we arent changing anything but our scouting.
I fiddled with the idea of a fan for a while... But I think extra practice time will be more worth it than messing with our entire robot Thursday. Hopefully it doesn't come back to haunt us, not changing anythinggg.. |

Re: Curie 2009!
Curie is going to rock this year. We may not be the most talked about division (or ARE we?), but I've got a good feeling about this year and our division!
Team 188 is excited to be a part of this amazing group of teams: Our division's best can match up with the best in any division. We are deep, and will field 8 strong alliances, with scoring threats at all 3 spots in every alliance. I think the alliance that takes this division (and eventually Einstein :D) won't necessarily be the three best "robots" on paper or by statistics, but the three teams that can buy-in and cooperate the best, and build relationships and trust that allow the alliance to execute some pretty intricate strategies. Trust that your partner will roll a super cell out to your robot instead of taking the shot if called upon. Trust that your partner will drop what they're doing to break you out of a pin. Trust that when you pin sometime, your partner will come and punish the pinned robot that much more. And trust that your partners understand that preventing a SuperCell scored on you is as valuable as scoring one yourself. Going through the list of teams in Curie, it's not only that there are "good robots," but teams that also really "get it" when it comes to non-robot intangibles. I think this is where the alliance that comes out of Curie is really going to shine. P.S. For anyone curious about 188's robot: Team 188 - Blizzard X - Video |

Re: Curie 2009!
Similar to what I did last year, I ran through 200 simulated qualification match schedules (all 102 matches, using the FIRST match generator). I used each team's average opr for their contribution to a match. I calculated the standings for each of the 200 simulated qualification schedules, and then looked at some statistics from the aggregate results.
When I went back and looked at last year's data, a team finished within 1 standard deviation of their average seed 60% of the time, and within 2 standard deviations 95% of the time. Only 3 teams seeded higher/lower then their min/max seed. Code:
Team Avg Seed Median Mode StDev Min Max #1 seed Top 8 |
Re: Curie 2009!
Lets just say that someone brings like 4 foot balls to the competition(similar to beach balls) for the stands. What do you guys think the chances are that your teams would keep them going around the stands? Just curious.

Re: Curie 2009!
I was having a Discussion with a driver of another Bright Orange team the other day about robot speed and just out of curiosity what are most of your robots geared for? I found out while talking to him I made a minor miscalculation and our robot is about 20% faster then I thought....
Just for reference we're running a Single CIM per side through standard Toughboxes with another sprocket reduction for an effective Gear Ratio of about 11:1. This puts our Speed at about 12fps under Ideal conditions, what about your robots? |
Re: Curie 2009!
Quote:
Even faster 'eh? =P I might have to bring some new gears with me...! We're geared straight out of the toughbox's, so 12.5:1. Which is about 10.5fps ideally, I think. It's around there. =P |

im not sure what our gear ratio it, just that is is a weird odd number and we move at ≈9 ft/sec(i think, we made it faster at MSC so it may be that or faster, if you ask me in pits I'll know by then). we have a pair of fisher prices(i think) in the front and a pair of CIMs in the back, geared to the same rate. (not on drive train so i don't know the exact stuff) |

Re: Curie 2009!
Well, (most of) 2815 is up and ready for another day on Curie. We tried a different sprocket ratio yesterday in a practice match--you'd recognize it by the way the robot hardly moved. :o We've flipped it back to our original ratio, which seems to be running much better. The hood we've added also appears to do its job well, so we're feeling pretty good about it.
