Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

Pink Man Group, Fish-boy, and Dean Simmons and the Kamen Brothers.

Oh, and it would be fun to see some robots too! :p

Me! :) I'd love to be able to go back to IRI this year! I missed it last year and was oh so sad.

Myself. I have been missing out on this awesome experience for far too long... this has to be the year I finally go. (:
I know all the teams/robots that go will be excellent as usual, so I'm not going to waste any wishes on those.

Actually, it's not the who for me, but the what.
As in what awesome things people donate to be part of the annual silent auction.
There are some amazing things that have been donated & made for this auction, & it's always cool to see what's there.
My personal favorite last year was the water-jet cut FIRST logo which I def. would of liked to have won, but by the point it ended, the auction got too rich for my blood.
Maybe this year I'll win something there!

Six teams that will beat last year's QF4-1 in terms of awesomeness. The real-time scoring in that match was 88-84...with a minute left in the match. It's the first match I can remember giving a standing ovation, and I know I wasn't alone. I fully expect similar feats this year.

That was a full standing ovation and there were tears in people's eyes from the magnificence of the performance that they fully comprehended as it was unfolding. It seems like there were a couple of ovations throughout the day, the place was rocking.

That was a pretty awesome match. Speaking of amesome, I still think it's too bad 1114 got penalized when with 968, that could have been so epic...like 200 points epic...

I really want to see 330 and 968, simply because they didn't go to Atlanta. I also want to see 254 because they didn't go last year. There are a ton of other teams I want to see as well. 1625, 25, 103, 45, 40, 1114, 217, 71, 79, 1771, 1717, 67, 2056, 188, 27, 148, 111, 359, 121, 126, 39, 33, 177, 234, 11, 222, 190, 399 the list would go on too... For rookies, I'd say 2753, 2826 and 2775.

(I didn't mean to leave anyone out if I did)

All of the out of state teams I love seeing in person. To name a few:

968
254
330
71
1625
1114
2056
111
25
234
and too many other teams to list. Not to mention all of the participants in the talent show (Karthik needs to make a comeback) and DSK.

Thanks for the kind words, I still can't believe how awesome we did at IRI, and how awesome everyone was. I just hope we do as well this year...Not sure if I'll be there college takes priority...Good luck to all who go. I'm sure it'll be scary as always.

The lists posted so far look pretty good. One team I wanted to mention was team 2815. Probably one of the least recognized rookies.

They had one of the strongest robots at Palmetto. 1771 was considered to be the strongest, but 2815 gave them a REALLY good run for their money.

I would like to see 2815 run with the high pack and see how they do. Considering they were first pick of 1st seed alliance, that's got to have some importance...:D.

It definitely can't hurt to apply, and even if you don't get invited sending a group of people to represent your team and watch the "all star" game is a great way to get people interested and fired up.

Re: Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

How about using a new qualification match mechanism which I think has been mentioned on CD before. The matches are generated through the day based on the team's record.

All teams play in a first round. Then, it's broken into groups. 1-0-0 teams, 0-1-0 teams, 0-0-1 teams.

Next round of matches is generated from the groups. The 1-0-0 teams play 1-0-0 teams, 0-1-0 teams play 0-1-0 teams, etc...

After that round...the matches are generated again based on win-loss-tie record with the RS as the tiebreaker to get the groups.

This would produce a team ranking at the end of the qualifications where the best teams that have really beat the other best teams are at the top where they deserve to be... I also think it helps group the teams so everyone is playing robots in about equal strength so all matches should be even more exciting...

Oh...I would also like to see more than 7 qualification matches at IRI...

Not really that hard to do, it's called Swiss pairings. Only problem with swiss rounds at a Robotics competition is that, let's say we start out with 64 teams (for demonstration purposes). Best case scenario you get 4 rounds before you hit a wall (64, 32, 16, 8), then you would need to start pairing up teams that have a loss with teams that don't have a loss and then it gets kind of messy.

I've thought about the idea a bit, not sure how plausible it is for FIRST, but certainly worth someone looking into the idea a bit.

I like it except that in Lunacy it is harder to win with a bad alliance than against a good alliance (if you understand how I worded that). However, there aren't many bad robots at IRI, so that might not be a problem. This happened all day Friday, we lost every match due to hard alliances along with one match against 111 and one match against 67. Anyway, it sounds great for IRI but could still flounder other teams, but flouder them less than the current system.

Nawaid Ladak 19-04-2009 23:47

Re: Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

I have two west cast teams that i would like to see come to IRI

1318- They did a great job on Galileo this weekend, not to mention winning oregon. and being a semifinalist in Seattle. Their a great robot and a great team,

488- Team X-Bot is one of the most unrecognized teams here, Madison is pretty much the face of the team on CD. I think they deserve a little bit more love after being finalists on Archimedes as the #6 alliance caption (they declined to join the #3 alliance, who they handy defeated in the QF's), they also won the Seattle Regional.

If you haven't seen their robot, it could be a frightful experience if you take your eyes off them for a couple of seconds. you can't really tell how many balls they have in their hopper because it's covered. You can watch them collect balls most of the match.... and next thing you know, they knocked in 18-20 balls into a trailer in less than two seconds.

Im sure both of these teams could come up with something for the talent show too

The Algorithm that they are speaking of is called Swiss. The system is used for different card tournaments like Magic The Gathering, Pokemon and Yugioh Organized Play. it doesn't use RS as a tiebreaker, but instead it uses your opponents records as tiebreakers (and their opponents, and the opponents there after.)

The only negitive i see with this idea would be that you would have to use a whole new scoring software platform that wouldn't take RS into consideration but instead the Tiebreakers (Levels 1-3) into effect.

(i'd also like to see 945 at IRI, but that's most likely not going to happen.... i know we can put on a funny skit though, since were bananas like that :D )

Personally, i would like to see myself attend IRI for the first time ever. I've always wanted to go but something has always come up. Hopefully this doesn't happen this year.... even if something does, i'll just say i have to go to IRI, and end it right there :)

I second this, the downside of school for me is that it starts the week of IRI. So I haven't attended in 2 years and I am sorely missing it. The thing Id like to see most at IRI is me being able to attend. :)

I would like to see 1114 at IRI this year. Their robot is crazy, I have seen some crappy video of it, but I would definitely like to see it in action in person. Too busy driving in Galileo to make my way over to Archimedes.

I would also like to see a mentor match. There is no better way to explain how slow it is on the regolith, then to let them drive a match themselves. Remember, yelling louder doesn't make the robot any faster.

I want to see a low human player game. The teams can put as many balls in the hopper as they want, then the rest are dumped on the floor, begin match. The human players get to throw only what is shoved into the airlock, and super cells, if they so choose.

Perhaps we'll see something along the lines of one of BattleCry's rule changes for this year:

Re: Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

I agree that human player scoring during auton isn't a great aspect of the game, but also many teams, including my own use the auton period to drive to the human player and load up the robot. I would like to see a rule change along the lines of: human players may throw moon rocks into play during auton, but moon rocks scored by the human player will not count. I realize however, how hard this would be to enforce.

No it doesn't, but it does convey that your coach wants you to do what you are told!

Re: Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

I'd like to see geographic diversity. How about something like: Any team from outside lower 48 & Ontario, plus 1/3 of the remaining teams must be from west of the Rockies, 1/3 from between the Rockies and the Mississippi River, and 1/3 from east of the Mississippi. Or maybe do 1/4 from each time zone.

From the west coast, in addition to my own team 980, I'd like to see (in no particular order, and probably leaving out some teams): Holy Cows (team 1538), BeachBots (team 330), RAWC (team 968), Cheesy Poofs (team 254), High Rollers (team 987), Xbot (team 488), D'Penguineers (team 1717), Spyder (team 1622), Kika Mana (team 368)

Re: Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

there has been mention about the old mentor match...like back in 2006
i know Paul and Mike would be up for the match and i think it would be amazing to actually see the mentors take control of the robots while the students coach :p

Here's an idea for you. I'd like to see six teams step up to the challenge of an auton only round. Six bots, no humans, who will win?

Are you sure? :D I would be willing to operate Raptor with Adam, would be fun. Maybe there should be more than one match of mentors behind the controls.

Anyways I'd like to see:
67, 217, 330, 254, 968, 1717, 1114, 2775, 971, 973, 1538, 987, 399, 1625, 2056, 148, 71, 245, 45, 79, 233, 1771, 234, 1902, 111, 188, 121, 247, 1124, 768, 365, 1918, 222, 2753, 1218, 488, 1649, and others I am forgetting.

I would love to see 1726 participate (I'm graduating, it would be fun to see our team play with the big dogs ;) ), but we're usually strapped for money, so I doubt we'll be able to go. As for rookies, well... Seems 2753 did a good job this year, making it to Einstein and all

IRI mentor rules specifically said that you couldn't have operated a robot as a student in FRC. Also, you had to have a student as drive coach. At least, that's what I remember.

Woot! Just talked to my parents and I might be flying over to see everything go down! :D

I've been told by 45 they'd adopt me for a while. Whoohoo!

After their season being cut short, I'd love to see 968 take the win at IRI.

I'd like to see a rookie go into IRI and leave with the gold. 2970 could do that this year. Very impressive!

Agreed. 2970 even has some qualities over 1625, and I still debate whether or not 2970 or 1625 was better. Close Wisconsin Regional matches, then a 2970 edge-out in Newton... an IRI showdown between the two is not unlikely.

To be fair, 1625 was double teamed that entire match while 2970 had a dead robot to score on. If my memory is correct, 1625 still scored close to 20 moonrocks that match. In my opinion 1625's preformance that match was more impressive and really set them apart as the best robot on Newton during that match.

I did really like 2970 and can't wait to see what they come up with next year, but 1625 was simply on another level with only a couple of other teams.

Re: Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

Yeah, you can't really use that match to say "x is better than y", and Winnovation's got strategic and structural advantages over 2970.

I like the mentor round, but I'd like to see this rule relaxed a little. Perhaps: you couldn't have operated a robot as a student in FRC within the last 10 years.

Re: Who do you want to see at IRI this year?

Say I've been the drive coach (tactician / strategist / whatever) and then register on my team as a mentor before IRI, which I was planning on doing. Would this make me elgible to drive the robot?

Of course I'd give up control to the other mentors as it would be really cool / funny to watch them drive but I just wanna know for the sake of it.

Given that IRI no longer runs the mentor round (Not a good move, IMO), in other events that have one, you might or might not be, depending on the event. As a (former) drive coach, you'd probably wind up in the Outpost or remote Fueling Station...

I am pretty sure we will be there. I like the idea of trying a match w/ no human players (except the outpost)
