...And I decided to view the video. About 1:15 into it, where they take "a 40 foot long beam... through a 10 foot wide door," I found a robotics application. When setting up and tearing down the field at FRC competitions, we often persuade the forklift operators to help us move the rolls of carpet. In case you don't know, the carpet is usually the hardest part of the field to deal with--very heavy, flops in the middle, and has no wheels. The forklift people love to help us--it's definitely a chance for them to show off their skills handling a very awkward load. Now we know the perfect forklift for handling the carpet! If it's good enough for Star Trek, it's good enough for FRC. :) |
Re: star trek mechanums

Re: star trek mechanums
Noticed it and mentioned it to all of my college friends, who confirmed for me that I am still a complete nerd.
The other piece of technology that made me gitty was Kirk's motorcycle, which I noticed used hubless wheels. There have been a few prototype cycles like these in the past but none have taken off due to the design posing more difficulties than benefits; still quite a sight though. |
Re: star trek mechanums
Slightly off-topic...
Did anyone else see the Red Matter and think "Overdrive trackball !!" ? My kids and the wife all thought the same thing. Perhaps I should've posted this on the "overdosed on FIRST thread"... |
Re: star trek mechanums
