[FF]: IRI Auction League

I am proposing a 10 owner auction style draft with each member having 7 teams. Scoring will be based on draft position, elimination finish and qualifying record (If available). Each owner will have 100 points to use to buy teams in an auction style. The draft will take place on a day and time agreed upon by the owners after the team list has been formalized for IRI. It will also take place via AOL Instant Messenger in a chat room.

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I would like to make a suggestion, I know we are planning on doing live bidding, but i'm wondering if there is a way to do bidding through posts, and set a final call date.

Example. I bid the following amount of points, for the following teams listed in order by lowest number team.

67--------Barry Bonzack---15
68--------Barry Bonzack---14
71--------Barry Bonzack---14
111-------Barry Bonzack---14
217-------Barry Bonzack---15
1114------Barry Bonzack---14
1625------Barry Bonzack---14

If someone wants them more than I do, they replace their name with mine and the new high bid, and add any other bids in numeric order.

Rules:
You can not bid for more than 7 teams at one time.
You can not bid for more than 100 points at one time.
No decimal points - bid in whole numbers only

This is not kicking off this bidding system, I just wanted to discuss the option. If the point of this league was to involve real-time bidding in a chat room format, then this system will not work. If the goal of the league is to innovate a new way to select teams for FF, then its worth discussion.

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

Will we still be drafting tommorrow even though the final team list hasn't been posted?

I would prefer we wait until we get the final team list. I think if the draft is before, the results may be determined by who has insider information or who is faster to snatch up the new team, instead of actually knowing the teams.

JackN 06-07-2009 20:16

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I agree, I would like to postpone the draft until next tuesday (if the list is posted soon). I apologize for the inconveniences this may cause. Either PM me or respond here if that is ok.

@Barry I would like this to be a live draft, to have a more social aspect to this league.

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I have one suggestion and one question.

For the suggestion: I've done a couple of auction fantasy football leagues and for those once a person nominates a player/team, an open auction is began. Here anyone can bid at anytime and it ends when no one wants to bid, instead of going in order having each person bid or pass. I fear that by going in order, the draft may take hours and may be overly confusing ("Am I next? I thought I was after...?"). Just a suggestion, I've never done it this way, so it may be easier.

For the question: If we keep it the bidding/passing in order, can you pass one 'round' and then bid the next time around?

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

Here is the final IRI Auction League draft board.

Position is the order in which teams were selected for bidding. Bid is the final winning bid the Owner paid for the team. Each of the 9 owners had a budget of 100 points to spend on 6 teams.

I definitely enjoyed this more than the typical pick your team directly draft. The only caveat is that an auction draft takes more time to complete.

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I'm still shocked I got the new and improved 47 for only 19 points. And still upset that rtfgnow outbid me on all my favorite rookies. Still can't complain with 6 very solid teams though.

XaulZan11 15-07-2009 12:07

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

Yeah, I agree with Travis. The auction style was a lot more enjoyable. It also gives more freedom to the person: do they want 3 elite teams and 3 scrubs or 6 very solid teams? It does take longer and does require everyone to be at the draft, but I think it is worth it.

I'm fairly pleased with my team. 5/6 of them made eliminations in Atlanta. Only Eric has more, but I don't think he has an elite team, like 2056.

I think Barry and JackN have the two best teams, though.

Barry Bonzack 15-07-2009 20:38

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I'm giving Indysam the nod on this one.

I'm wishing I would have bitten the bullet and bid for 222. I am very pleased with my team though.

IndySam 15-07-2009 20:55

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I took the go big or go home approach and spent 93 on my first three picks.
There were a couple of real good teams that I thought would sneak under peoples radar but that didn't happen the way I hoped.

We will see if lack of depth hurts me.

217, 45, 111, 1741, 292 and 829.

Chris is me 16-07-2009 11:41

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I was going to go for 1 superpower, 3 under the radar, 2 whatever else I can get, and it worked out alright for me. I wish 2970 went for less, but I've got 47 for less than I expected 2970 so I can't complain.

2826 was going to be my sleeper since all they really need to do in order to be competitive at IRI is human load and / or modify their intake (they even have an autonomous that takes them close enough to a human player, so it's literally just a strategy change). But silly rtfgnow had to nab them and 2970 in the Spree of Wisconsin Rookies.

I like the auction style because it allowed for a lot of strategy discussion, closest thing I'll get to FIRST IRC :)

Travis Hoffman 20-07-2009 11:09

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

With 2826's exit from the IRI team list, rtfgnow must make another selection from the remaining list of teams.

Jack, could you post the scoring that you used? I'm doing a season long fantasy FIRST (similar to football where you keep teams throughout the year and choose which ones to start) with some people on my team and working on a fair scoring system for robot preformance only.

Chris is me 05-08-2009 21:35

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

I don't really know the scoring system but I bet I got lucky with a lot of the awards. 1771 getting a Judge's Award, 47 getting Best Scoring Robot, and 461 getting one on top of 1625 winning probably gave me a huge boost. I didn't pick based on awards.

Just a little food for thought for a moment...

With the depth of the field in so many different areas besides and alongside of the robot competition - it would have given you all a run for your money and an excellent use of your time to think about all of the teams involved in IRI 2009 and what they each brought to the table. It was a cornucopia of talent, expertise, passion, knowledge, commitment, inspiration, attitude, and teamwork. Given the times and realities that we are living in, the teams and everything that they believe in and stand for, made IRI even more significant and powerful in 2009.

Re: [FF]: IRI Auction League

Jane, its alot harder to pinpoint a team which will get a certain award such as the imagery award and so on, than it is to pick out teams you know will perform on the field well. As such it is typically an intelligent choice to pick by robot capability for a small mini competition FF based around such.
