One thing you learn very quickly in FIRST is that theory and practice are two completely different things.
When all those teams actually sign up I'll say they're coming. Since they haven't I would say for now they aint coming.

IMO, it'll still be a blast with any number of teams. That being said, 24+ teams is always better, and it looks like we're going to make it. Yay!

I figured I'd try to get you to ask one more time. :)

A subset of Team 48 is coming. We are signed up as Team 48. No students will attend (we already went to Kettering Kickoff this year). We're using 48's robot to allow 379 to field a 2nd drive team.

Several Team 48 mentors and alumni may attend to help out in the pits and such. We're all riding up together on 379's bus. 1:30 AM departure time - awesome.

I believe I will also offer up my face as a target in some pie thing I've heard about. But we all know you'd rather toss at Cormier.

If we only have 18, could we do 6 alliances of 3 or something similar? I personally would rather have less alliances of 3 than more alliances of 2. But then again, hopefully more teams will register.

If we need to make a cut somewhere, we typically have cut number of alliances and kept the alliance count to three teams. All this means is less finals time which either means more time for qualifiers or fun events.

Re: 2009 Rah-Cha-Cha Ruckus!!!

Our team has run into some trouble and we're wondering if anyone can help us out.
After running our 09 robot in 3 parades and several demos, replacing wheels, encoders, and code, she's finally broken down on us a lot earlier than we'd predicted. As it stands, she's in no shape to be run in another match without a lot of time and energy spent on repairs.
Team 578 has always loved going to the Ruckus every year, and we registered to do both the Vex and FRC events this year, but we're afraid we might have to pull out of FRC because of our robot woes.
Are there any teams that have a practice robot or spare robot they'd be willing to let our team borrow for the day, so that we could let new members get drive experience and enjoy the fun of an FRC competition? I realize this is kind of sudden, but we just decided last weekend that our robot was beyond repair.
If anybody is able to help us out in the spirit of Gracious Professionalism, our team would be incredibly thankful!

I did hear that the Spencerport team has an extra robot. They were willing to lend it to the Rookie Pittsford team for the ruckus. They probably would do the same for this case. Contact them.

Let's hope everything runs smoothly this year. There's no point loading up teams with bots that barely work if it means they'll be spending more time troubleshooting than competing. Are you going to be having 18 teams running matches so frequently that they can't even get to their pit before being queued? or is it going to be a more relaxed evenly paced event this year?

Chris is me 19-10-2009 15:44

Re: 2009 Rah-Cha-Cha Ruckus!!!

Just got a financial "boost" from my parents covering bus tickets to Rochester. I'm excited! Once I get all of my tests out of the way, all I have to do is label all of my Vex parts, build what I can in Troy, and finalize designs (figuring out how to mount the "towers" that will hold the gears holding the arms on is probably trickiest... and how to scrap independently actuated tread in favor of a sliding door... with parts I don't have on hand). Oh, and I have to get EasyC working.

Does it make sense for me to sign up as a volunteer also, or should I just see where I can help when I get there?

commodoredl 19-10-2009 15:48

Re: 2009 Rah-Cha-Cha Ruckus!!!

Good news- thanks to a generous offer from the X-Cats, team 578 will be able to attend the Ruckus and borrow their practice robot to compete in the Lunacy competition. Our team is eternally grateful for all the teams who offered to help us out, and it means a lot to us that we'll still be able to attend our favorite off-season event. :D

What is the happy medium between ensuring lots of playing time and allowing for pit time for repairs and recovery? I think they are prepping match schedules starting tonight (the close of registration is today). I'll make sure they hear this feedback!

NO. The ones that you can count on are Libby and Alex. Most likely Koko Ed, Kim, if she is there, and maybe 1 or 2 more. Bring cash so that you can buy tickets for the draws. If your number is drawn by the "volunteer", you get to give them a Pie-in-the-Eye. This is a yearly tradition that always seems to "mess" up the finals. The BIGGEST attraction is Alex who seems to be able to get 90% of the pie in his mouth. Big target I guess and it is never closed. ::safety::

I'm pretty sure artificial whipped topping makes a great hair conditioner....

Thank you to all of those involved in putting on a great event. Both 379 and 48 had a great time, and we would not hesitate to come back if the event fits our schedule next fall.

Congratulations to all finalists and winners - by the way, I so called that 48-48 tie in the finals, right down to that beautiful score.

Thanks to our good friends and NEOFRA partners on 379 for giving us a ride to the event and supplying a 2nd drive team for our robot - you guys did an outstanding job! I think everyone was also impressed with your own robot modifications you worked so hard on the past few months - you should be proud of your accomplishments! Thank you for selecting us - it was awesome being on the same alliance as you - thanks also to 1405 for rounding out the alliance and tolerating my "energetic" coaching style. :)

Thanks to 1511 for giving us a glimpse of the new Classmate PC driver station/dashboard.

Finally, thanks to those who allowed me to participate in the pie in the eye event, giving one of our mentors the chance to get me back on behalf of all the team for all the crap I put them through each year. A special shout out to the girl who totally blasted Koko Ed (and half the audience and gym floor).

Keep up the great work, all!

Ruckus was great!!!

I had a fun time as a referee, although I never managed to catch Jason Rees cheating during the mentor matches! :(

Congratulations to the winning alliance of 191, 2340 and 1511 on a tremendous effort! And congratulations to all the teams that competed! It was especially fun knowing that you all were mixing up the drive team members during the qualification rounds - I loved seeing all the new faces involved!

Congrats to 1511's Ruckus VEX drivers, Kristina and Rachel, for winning the VEX competition and for being very good sports about competing! Big big thanks to Clarkson Ninja Turtles for building the extra VEX bot so we could get some hands on experiences, and for being very gracious especially when it seems they gave away the wrong robot!

A huge thank you to the planning committee! All those hours made the event an overwelming success! And thanks to all the team members, mentors and parents who volunteered! And to NASA for the field! And a huge thanks to Jeff Downs for writing the code to make the field work and the display look pretty!

It was great seeing friends from a little further away - Steve, representing Canada (the Canadian National Anthem was sung just for him), Kim and Eric Eckhardt (newly transplanted to Boston, but back for Ruckus), Libby :), and Travis and the whole crew from Ohio!

I hope someone posts all the award winners soon and lots of photos! (And Koko Ed, those awards were fantastic, if I do say so myself! ;) )

Thanks to all our pie in the eye volunteers including newcomers Libby K. and Travis H.

Thanks to NASA for use of their field during the event.

A huge thanks to the Ruckus Planning Committee which worked very hard to put this event on year after year.

Great video guys. I still would like to know what Libby did to her room mate to have such a blow delivered with the pie.

I would like to know if you offer a class in the correct method of pie throwing. There seems to be a side > loop around > chin to forehead > plop and fold on the top of the head method. Well, and then there's the smash Ed method, too.
