New game clue from Bill's Blog

The Game Design Committee met this weekend and I want to compliment Dave Lavery who found a way to really use his head while testing game elements.

Bill's Blog

Speculate away!

Re: New game clue from Bill's Blog

I speculate that Mr. Lavery hit his head on a game object when they were messing around with them. Either that or he used it as a hat of some type.

Re: New game clue from Bill's Blog

I don't think this is an actual clue. I mean I'm sure Mr. Lavery could get his hands on MILLIONS of items that can be potential game pieces and along with that, I'm sure there are countless MORE things he could do with each one of those items. So I don't really consider that a clue though. :P

But I am excited to see that they have the game pretty much figured out.

Not really.

Lets see... If I took a water ballon and threw it at Mr. Lavery's head... I suppose that would count?

Could be a soccer ball. Or a non-hint designed to confuse us. Since Dave was mentioned it has to be an evil scheme to confuse people.

I'm going to laugh if we get something like a trackball this year. Anyone care to explain how this clue could relate to that game piece?

I'm going to guess it something hanging that you can bump your head into when you walk by. That or a soccer ball like chris said

The GDC is a strange animal (made up of strange animals) I wouldn't make assumptions. A year ago nobody thought we would have a game played on a slippery plastic surface.

I'm pretty sure every game/game piece can have a relationship with the head- you can put it on your head, hit your head on it, hit it with your head, or some combination of these no matter what the field/game piece is. Not to ruin the fun...

I can't believe there's game hint talk in the summer. :ahh:

I think the key word is tested with his head.

What can you test with your head? Maybe he "headed" a ball over a bar or something?

I don't think he'd use his head to test the durability of something.... would he?

Reminds me how I got my "Tetraman" nickname. I put a Tetra on my head, and the rest is history.

I'm guessing something similar happened.

And I think the most important part to take from this blog statement more then "using his head" is the part that says - we’re really striving for clarity and brevity, but it’s a lot harder than it looks. I sense that this game is going to have a lot of things to do and watch out for unlike Lunacy where there were only 3-5 rules that really changed things.

(You'll have to ask Dave about that one...)

I noticed the part about tested with his head and I thought about the leather football helmets from back in the day. Those were so cool.

Edit: Oh wait! used his head... that could be literally or it could mean he thought of a different way to test.

Sometimes when someone says "now that's using your head!" it's because someone else hit their head on something and clotheslined themselves. :ahh:

Five (six?) foot high hanging bar? And takers? Bueler?

Also, I really appreciate the part about them striving for simpler more concise rules. Shorter, simpler rules help everyone.

Must...resist...temptations...to analyze...possible game hint... >.<" I feel like this is just a red herring, but what if it isn't?

If it isn't: Something related to clotheslining (revival of the overpass?), or soccer-ball-type-objects (though when you think about that one, it would seem that they're limiting our robot ideas already, with emphasis on the top of the robot)

Thanks GDC, now my mind is going to be pondering the possibilities until December of it's own volition

I need help accurately measuring Dav'e head this weekend.

I predict that the clue refers to Dave allowing for a mold of his head for next years game piece.

Game will be called "Head's Up", and FIRST people will call it "Dave Ball". The game will be a wierd version of volley ball where teams start with balls in lots of various containers on their 1/2 of the field and have to fire balls over or under a net (two horizonatl bars with polycard between them 2 foot high to 5 feet high) that cross the field. Note unlike volleball, it will be OK to go under the net. Lowest amount of balls on your side at the end of the game wins.

Now to find some calipers before heading off to the IRI.

An improvement might see the goal to be firing balls only between the bars...bonus points will be based on stacking the now-empty ball containers...you can break a stack by firing the balls at it.

You know I'd be a lot less inclined to believe that this was actually a hint if the blog entry wasn't titled "using your head". I'm starting to see how the GDC earned its reputation.

I'm surprised that no one has made any guesstimates regarding the comments about FedEx. What does everyone think of a game involving robots retrieving and balancing boxes on top of the robot (which Dave was obviously trying for himself recently :D

In short, I don't have a clue. I think I'll just wait until December to twist my brain over this...or at least try and fail miserably in the attempt ^_-

I've said this before, but the entire GDC is pure evil. (Exceptions are pure evil geniuses--which happens to be about 3 of them.)

Also note that we had a box game in 2003, and trying to build the stacks was a nightmare--all it took was one good clip and the stack fell down. Some teams (217 comes to mind) protected the stacks while building them, but once released, they were easy targets.

Even tho it's never going to happen I'm tempted to say, IT'S A DOLPHIN IN A WATER GAME!!! but thats way off the mark. All tho some part of Bill's blog has to be a hint because isn't it a bit overdue by now? Maybe the game has to do with stopping robots from delivering a package and thats why their no official hint that leads us to thinking it's a water game.

I've got it.

The game piece for 2010 is...

HELMETS!

Dave used his head to test a game piece, but later says "Ouch." So therefore, either the game object must be hard or Dave didn't have protection. Try hitting a helmet with your head...

Oh, now that wouldn't be any fun! Can you imagine how boring winter break and kickoff would be if we already knew what the game was? Kick-off wouldn't be nearly as exciting (and quite frankly that's half my winter break :D). Getting Dave's little clues is more enjoyable anyway!

A few nights ago I dreamed that I was at the 2010 kickoff. The game piece was a section of PVC pipe, about 5 feet long. There were two of them, and each was hung vertically from the ceiling with a cable. The bottom of the pipe was about 5 feet off the floor. Just the right height for Dave Lavery to hit his head on! Maybe it wasn't a dream after all - maybe it was a vision...

Unfortunately, I woke up before I found out what we were supposed to do with the game pieces. Maybe it was a "capture the flag" game.

Well, I went looking for inspiration, and Googled "Head".

The first hit was a site called HEAD.com a racket-sports supplies site. One of the first things I noticed was that there was a logo near the bottom affiliating it with a site called coolearth.org. As it suggests, it is an environment conservation site. In another thread I read, people were suggesting that the game would have something about going green. Maybe it's up to the engineers of tomorrow to come up with ways to save the environment and protect our planet?

Other looking-too-far-into-it ideas about this site-

There was a mention from Bill earlier to ice cream- Head and the linked company Tyrolia sell winter sports stuff- though only ski/snowboard

There was a link to PENN who makes racquet/tennis balls (also a eco-friendly company) Game pieces?

And- because I have to do it- the final link was to Mares, which does diving. Do I need to say it? Well I will anyway- WATER GAME!!!

I have too much time on my hands...;)

Yum! I love honey!

And the rest of the Pooh story is that they made Rabbit lose weight so that he could get his head out of the hole! Maybe we will all be judged on our ability to lose weight during the build season! Or have the robot lose weight during a match! (Hey, I can be as ridiculous as the next person! :) )

I woke up one day this summer (coincidentally enough, right after the GDC met in July) with a thought about this year's game.

Now, we know from last year that the GDC tried to find a relatively inexpensive and easily obtainable game piece. We also know that Tetras (2005 game) and the Track Balls (2008) were about 8lbs apiece. So I pondered what common item is readily available and 8lbs or less ...

Then it hit me: a bowling ball! :ahh:
