Bill's Blog 9-26 this could be fun

The GDC has two new members this year. They will be announced officially in September but since they’re already actively participating in planning for 2010 I want to welcome Paul Lazarus of White Dwarf Productions and Calum Pearson from Cirque du Soleil. With Paul’s video and Calum’s production experience, they have made some very interesting suggestions regarding this year’s challenge.

I love the idea of new non-FIRST people on the GDC.

Cirque du Soleil?

Well this should prove interesting! :D

The eye candy factor just reached warp speed.

Welcome to the GDC, Paul Lazarus and Calum Pearson. Bring it on!

I guess this means we have to work on becoming super-flexible and always be ready for our close-ups at robotics from now on? :D

Welcome! What a cool way to bring popular culture into the mix!

I was thinking of the amazing and huge moving/shifting platforms that I saw in a performance a couple of years ago - and of the vertical possibilities. Exploring dimensions or seeming dimensions in a whole new light.

Perfectly amazing fantastic possibilities and opportunities have appeared by bringing on/tapping into this wealth of talent and know-how.

I personally think that this is huge. For many, many years, FIRST has needed to create a game with more media and spectator appeal. Adding Paul and Calum to the GDC is a very smart move. I'm excited to see what is unveiled in January.

We spoke to Mr. Pearson at the Las Vegas regional, and he definitely had some new and innovative ideas.

Welcome to the newest members of the GDC. Sounds like FIRST is going mainstream!

I approve! Not to speak ill of Lunacy, but it wasn't exactly fast paced! Overdrive was a bit better, but something that could actually WOW an audience would definately attract more of the general public that we are trying so hard to reach.

Cirque du Soleil experience = Someone who understands how to entertain an audience. Fantastic! Great to see some new faces on the GDC.

Welcome Paul and Calum!

A number of recent Chairman's Award teams have worked with Paul Lazarus during the development of their Chairman's videos. He has directed a number of television shows, including "Psych" and "Samantha Who."

It's great to see both Paul and Calum involved. I look forward to a game that is even more spectator and television friendly than previous games.

Does this apply to coaches? Please say no.

That said, I second Andy's optimism--folks with an eye for what is camera- and spectator-friendly is a great thing. (It was dark days for anyone trying to auto-expose action on the field this year. Seriously, my iPhone couldn't adjust for it.)

SHHHHHHHHHHH! We weren't supposed to tell them that! Next thing you know, they'll find out that they'll only have a choice of tights, or kilts...those can be the new replacements for the operator badges :P Coaches get to wear habits, and safety captains...well, we can put them in frilly pink dresses. Oh the irony.

Congrats to Paul and Calum! I can't wait to see what you guys come up with. It will certainly be nice to see some new ideas coming from the GDC (err, of course, it also means that if we all end up disliking the game this year, we know who to blame ::ouch:: [: ), especially from people outside of FIRST

This is good news, fresh blood on the GDC means longer until we have a real flop of a game. Hope those people realize what they got themselves into though.

Oh God, just what we all need to see. You know the phrase "What has been seen cannot be unseen" ? Yeah, that applies here, please don't EVER think this is a good idea. The mental images are horrifying enough. Especially since some of the mentors would join in the ummm fun? No one, I mean NO ONE, wants to see Andy Baker in tights. (No offense Andy)

That phrase also applies to the image of Andy Baker in tights. Heidi, do you have any photoshop for us? [:
*tries to bash image out of head with hammer* ::ouch::

Though it could be worse...it could be a mental image of Dave Lavery in tights. (No offense Dave)

I'll stop taking the thread off topic now :/

You know that they don't really have a clue. They may think so, but only direct involvement with FIRST can do that. I've been in for four years and still am not quite sure what I am in for. :D

Dare I remind you all we've already seen Sister Baker? Ballerina Baker can't be too far behind....

Ooh- Ooh- maybe those wonderful dollmakers from 148 could make Andy Baker dolls with interchangeable outfits. There could be Policeman Baker, Construction Worker Baker - you could have your own Baker Village People!
