2010 Finger Lakes Regional

Here we go again! 6th Annual Finger Lakes Regional @ RIT's Gordon Field House

Week 1 Regional. Team 340 is really excited to build off of our success last year and keep it going this year. Last year had a lot of Canadian flavor which was awesome. What will FLR bring this year? Only one way to start finding out!!

Who's Coming!?!?!

Team 1640 (sab-BOT-age) will pick this event in our second round. We are going to Philly, since that's our "home" regional, so we snag it first.

Looking forward to playing in the snow!

That will be fun to have 1640 come to our home turf, since we've been coming to yours for the past two years!

And if you want to come up for Ruckus, I'm sure we can arrange some cheap housing for a small contingent! :)

Strange, just yesterday I e-mailed the regional director to see if there was a waitlist situation setup because some FLR "regulars" hadn't made the list.

cool.

Re: 2010 Finger Lakes Regional

I see that FLR has topped out at 40 teams already!

Some out of townees are 63, 188, 217, 291, 316, 610, 843, 1640. Looks like we lost our Canadian influence for the most part, some are still coming. Great to see 217 make the trip back to the Roc!

Team 1640 (sab-BOT-age) was able to snag one of the few open slots. Sorry to miss Ruckus this weekend but I'm looking forward to coming to the frozen tundra of Central NY in March!

Looks like another classic FLR is coming up. Lots of pro teams mixed with skilled rookies with great mentors backing them up. FLR is easily the most exciting regional of the early weeks.

Omg, I'm starting to get really excited for FLR this year. The competition is going to be insane. Start with some good ol' NY teams, throw in plenty of Canadian flavor, mix it with other northeastern powers, and it's gonna be a blast. So many good teams! 191, 1126, 340, 188, 1511, and 217!? (Apologies to all the teams not mentioned here, theses are only the few I can remember off the top of my head). Two teams that captained an alliance to Einstein!?!?!? (1507 and 217). Whoa. It's mind-bottling.

Make that 3 teams that captained an alliance to Einstein. 1126 did it in 2004 and in 2006 we were picked in the top 8 and made it to Einstein.

So excited for Finger Lakes Regional!
Just a short safety note…my mom is deaf and at the competitions we all look out for her. Someone will say “Robot coming through” and because she doesn’t hear, she often gets jostled about. Last year we finally pinned a button to her back that states “I am Deaf” and it did seem to help.
In doing my pre-scouting, I see that we are welcoming rookie Team 3162, RoBoComm-X, to the Fingerlakes Regional and they are from a deaf school. Please take a moment and discuss with your teams the importance of not assuming you are being heard when you ask someone to step aside. Thanks and see ya there! :)

Apologies to teams 1126 and 522, I was only involved last year so I didn't know you guys were there too. Either way, the point I was trying to make was the the level of competition is going to be insane. And it will be. Lol.

I would totally be into that. Last year was awesome. My only conflict is that my sister is going to be coming in on Thursday night to volunteer at FLR, and I don't know how late she will be. I hope she gets here at a reasonable time so she can go taggin' with us.

Yes RoBoComm-X are an amazing lot of people. We have the pleasure of sharing Bausch and Lomb's facilities with them and I am sure both our robots will do well thanks to Ron Borden and all of the mentors at Bausch and Lomb.

Re: 2010 Finger Lakes Regional

Having a deaf team there sounds interesting. Some of our team members have talked about it, and it looks like a good opportunity to practice our sign language (at least for those students who know ASL - for the rest of us, it's a good chance to learn). Does anyone know a good website that gives a crash course in sign language? (Or iPhone/Droid app.) I'd also be particularly interested in learning the signs for things related to robots, which might actually be useful at competition. :D
On a sadder note, 217 will no longer be attending laser tag on Thursday night, or so I've heard. Apparently, too many other teams are doing it, and they don't have enough room for us. I can understand, as we have roughly 70 people we're traveling with, but it's still disappointing. :(
I'll just rely on other teams to hear stories of how great it was. :D

I remember when team 1991 won rookie all star at BAE.
Half of the members on th eteam were hearing impaired and the audience saluted them with a silents standing ovation.
It was quite inspiring to see.

Regarding a crash course in ASL- for newcomers I'd suggest checking out the ABC first

For signs there are a ton of resources online, one for example is: ASL Dictionary

the iPhone App Store appears to have a plethora of applications (most which cost $$), not sure if they're any good though. Can't argue with the internet when it's free :)

I definitely think it'd be a great idea to learn some words that would be useful to teams at competitions. I think its great that everyone is willing to learn a little to help out. I just searched some sites and i didnt see anything that really stood out but im gonna try and put together some phrases for my team. Some things like; "you're being cued" and "help?" i hope i can find some other useful phrases but im not sure, maybe my mom will help me. Can't wait!

I haven't been able to watch the webcast, but can someone confirm that there are a _lot_ of penalties?

Q5 appears to have given 217/211/378 1 seeding point and 6 co-opertition points, which implies that the match result was 3-1 for their opponents, but they lost all their points on penalties?

Vikesrock 05-03-2010 10:45

Re: 2010 Finger Lakes Regional

Yep, tons of penalties in all the events I've been watching. Mostly for 3" incursion, some for Frame Perimeter violations.

1 Robot can easily incur 3+ violations of the 3" rule if not designed to keep the balls out. Not sure how these robots are passing inspection though with <R19>

yea where are all these penalties coming from? like is it really that hard to not let a ball get 3" into your robot? where are the fram perimeter violations coming from?

kinda sad to see that the blue side at FLR has only scored 1 point in 6 matches (due to penalties..)

I'm not positive, but I believe most of the ones I have seen are from trying to hang before the finale, then backing up to reposition a hook.

Double digits!

217, 145 and 1559 just scored 11 in Q45

I haven't watched any of the webcast but I see 217 has 4 hanging points. I assume this is the finale bonus? If so, did they put their hanger back on or climb on a ramp-bot?

They've just had some hanging partners:

Oh, that makes sense. It also explains why so many teams have hanging points.

The Hanging Mechanism is still not on 217. Unless their hiding in the pits now (I was one of the last people out of the pits and it was still empty). FLR has been good so far and can't wait to see how tomorrow plays out for all of us. Good Luck to Everyone.

Qualifications are really fun. Other then the first issue and the last issue, I'd say the entire day went swimmingly.

It is anybody's game. This year's eliminations are going to be the most unpredictable. Even the best alliances can be defeated by good blocking or a bad start to the game. Every second you waste trying to get balls into the goals, the less time you score the second. And it's your next score thats so important.

Re: 2010 Finger Lakes Regional

A lot of penalties. Tons of robots were getting the ball stuck under them. Even our robot, which was designed to never have that happen, got a couple under in one match when we tried to score along the side wall.
The seeding system is also a little wonky. I know of at least one team that's ahead of us in the rankings, but has only 1 win. They were blown out by so many teams, they had a higher seeding score than others.

Josh Goodman 06-03-2010 00:26

Re: 2010 Finger Lakes Regional

The most common penalty at FLR today was in fact G46 - Ball Penetration. As well as G30s for exceeding the frame perimeter for more than two seconds. Teams have been getting penalties and cards left and right for very simple things written plainly in the manual that shouldn't be a problem. I know it may seem redundant...but MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE RULES!! :ahh:

Penalties have been very common this year, kinda like in 08

Fun outcome in match 63... someone finally pulled off a six vs zero match.

Match 63
Red final: 0
Blue final: 11

Red seeding points: 12 (blue had a penalty)
Blue seeding points: 11

To all who saw match 63, great match from the alliance of 191, 229, 250, 1511, 3173, & 3181. What a great way to incorporate the weakness of the seeding into a legitimate strategy that helps all teams involved.

Thanks again to all teams involved in the ultimate co-operation match

During our scouting meeting last night, the idea for the 6v0 match kept coming up. We knew that it wouldn't be the most popular idea, so we made sure to choose a match in which we were playing with some good friends, and the college mentors past teams.
Before the start of the match, all six teams sat down to discuss if we really wanted to try this.
This idea behind this match was not to show off, or to try and be rebelious.
The six teams just wanted to play one match that every team would come away with a great ranking score.

Even though I've been out this season building my little 10 month old robot I can't stay way from all the friend in FIRST.

What a great set of Elimination Rounds. Congratulations to 1551,217,174 on the FLR Regional Win.

To 1551 - it was a long time coming and with all the hardships in the past few years you deserved it.

Congratulations to 610,188,191 for a great show and great teamwork shown during all the Elimination rounds- great strategies seen as more than worthy FLR Finalists!

Great job to all the teams and volunteers who attended and made this year's event exciting as always!

First of all, I would like to say good game to 217, 1551, and 174 on their victory at FLR today. It was fun and a good learning experience for Atlanta, such as, don't recycle the wheels from last year by adding tread over the top of them and then trying to use wood screws to attach the gears to them unless you want them to fail (with just the darnedest timing) during the finals.

To be honest, I was surprised that we went as far as we did. I was more surprised when 188 and 610 picked us for an alliance partner during the eliminations, though.

Ahh whatever, onto Atlanta, I say!

That particular match the highlight of the preliminary matches for me, as well as the rest of the drives team.

It was a good feeling to be working with all of the teams on the field.

Thanks 229, 1511, 250, 3173, and 3181 for a great match!

Jason, a team like 188 doesn't pick partners without VERY good reasons. 610 wasn't picked just because they were Canadian, and you weren't picked just because you have a low team number, are in the Hall of Fame, and are arguably Rochester's most recognizable team.

From an outside observer, I doubt the alliance would've gotten to the finals without 191's stifling defense and hanging, 610's ability to muscle its way through robots to balls in the midfield and advance balls, or 188's ability to control balls and finish around the net.

It didn't seem like you guys were able to play your best strategy during the finals due to mechanical issues, but from here it looked like you did the absolute best you could given what you had. You should be extremely proud.

It was inspiring to see you guys drive into position and successfully hang, even though you really only had 1 working drive wheel. How you managed that, I will never know - but it was impressive!
