Sounds like fun, and the students are interested. I'll get a head count at tonight's meeting. After a 10 hour car trip they will need to blow off some energy. What better way than Ultimate Frisbee!

Re: 2010 FLORIDA REGIONAL

Hey Florida Coaches, Drivers, Scouts and Strategists, most of you are probably aware of the seeding point rules that favor the losing teams. However many teams at their week 1 regionals found that most teams thought that just winning matches would rank them higher in seeding. There are strategies that work in all teams favor to take advantage of these rules during seeding matches where teams must score in the opponents goals to optimize their own alliances seeding scores. This is confusing and upsetting a lot of teams and I would like to preemptively nip any of that in the bud so there's no confrontations at the regional as to getting everyone to work together (either 6v0 or 3v3). Can we have a discussion about this and see where people stand on this issue? There's only a couple days left to work out whether we are going to:

a) use these rules to our advantage
b) agree to disagree and protest
c) see if we can come up with our own gentlemens agreement for some compromise that we can all live with
d) FIRST will make a change in the rules - which most people don't think will happen.
e) another idea?

Please don't shoot the messenger! I'm just trying to minimize the confusion and strife. I'm aware there are many strategies a team can employ that don't involve working in advance with the opponents but the fact that there are is why I'm posting this.

No shooting Dan... leaves me with the same taste in my mouth as the 2001 "Love Fest"

Warren and George have been looking at this all season. I'll let them do the talking...but suffice it to say that I prefer head-to-head competition and simple win-lose-draw seeding.

...case in point: Got a call, Saturday, from Gary Dillard who now mentors a Huntsville area team. He was at the Bayou Regional. The team next to them in the pit, did not get there 'bot past inspection until after the end of Qual rounds. They seeded 8th.

The prosecution rests...

On a more positive note: I am really looking forward to the field of teams coming to the Florida Regional. Drive 'em like ya stole 'em teams!

Dan - thank you for bringing this up.

Honestly I can go as far to say that the ranking system reminds me of exactly what happened back in 2003. That year in Florida, and along with the other Week 2 regionals, teams recognized that in order to move up in ranking, they had to work together.

That weekend, the UCF Regional set the national high score of 233 (coincidently).

It became apparent to the rest of the teams that in order to catch up, they too had to work together. This set the pace for the rest of the weeks of competition.

I honestly feel that we would be doing ourselves a dis-service by not taking advantage of the rules mainly since we will not be training our teams to be prepared for other regionals and perhaps even the championship event.

Unless FIRST explicitly changes the rules, I say to stick to them. And if the rules change it has to change during Week 2.

With that said, I'm well aware that in some matches it may not be advantageous to do a "6vs0" strategy. That is fine, it is part of the game. It is just difficult for others to accept this type of gameplay because of our upbringing through sports of 2 clear opposing forces and a well defined winner & loser.
