Any good web hosting sites?

Hi,
We are in the process of remaking our team website entirely from scratch (HTML), and I was wondering if anybody knows a good web hosting site they like in particular, and for what reasons?

-Preferably free but payed is okay.
-Very reliable
-Efficient web server
-Lots of available memory

If it doesn't match these descriptions still please post your recommendation. :)

Thank you

I've used both Dreamhost and Hostmonster and I would pick Dreamhost over Hostmonster any day of the week. It's worth the extra $30.

We use AcornHost's non-profit plan. You don't get much in terms of disk and bandwidth resources (ie they probably aren't overselling like pretty much every other host, though I'm not sure), but it's relatively cheap and the service is excellent.

My highschool team, Team 20, is sponsored by a webhost named HostRocket. Maybe they'll be willing to cut you a FIRST friendly deal!

Cyber Blue 234 is switching all of their hosted sites to Godaddy.com hosting. It is very cheap and very reliable and offers all levels of server access that you need.

We used to use godaddy but had to switch.

They were good and cheap for things like simple sites but if you did a CMS like joomla it could not handle it. They had the database servers and web servers on different machines and it didn't work well. From midnight to 5 am it ran okay but as their overall traffic picked up the db servers really got tired.

We switched to bluehost.com and they have been FANTASTIC. The mysql database and web server is on the same machine. Very good performance for a joomla site. Excellent tech support. For CMS type sytems they blow the doors off of Godaddy.

All this information is based on the state of affairs two years ago. It may be complete bunk now !!

We use godaddy.com to run PHP/SQL running MediaWiki. So far very good support, good uptime, good speed.

Work uses Hostmonster. It has a slighty better cpanel and range of features. On the other hand it's a little more per month.

Of the five listed so far you can't go wrong with any of them.

As long as you buy your own domain, Team 2502 will host your team, if you'd like.

It's hosted by MediaTemple in a Tier 4 Datacenter in the LA Network hub.. Um, PM me if you want to.

Thanks,
Keehun

Re: Any good web hosting sites?

I've used godaddy, and i've not used but heard good things about 1&1 and host gator. If i had the money, i'd use mediatemple. But most the websites that people are suggesting are very known and reliable. But i'd reckamend you'd put a little more description of what you want the hosting for because html and lots of memory/space is not something you really put together. Most non-free sites are not free because they are offering php/asp.net/linux/etc. You could probably get a free domain and host for the html, and use a free dns forwarding to host the big files on your own computer/sever.
(Also, if your using a database, my personal luck with godaddy has been fine (MSSQL and MySQL), but it could depend on time zones, and the way your database is set up. Customer service was excellent to, i broke one of their databases and they fixed it within 2 days. hehe ;)

I've heard good things about HostGator. I've also heard amazing things about 1&1 UNTIL there's a problem. Unless you get "LUCKY" there is virtually no customer support.

MediaTemple is expensive because it deserves to be. The biggest testament is when I called customer support and the guy remembered me. I don't call them that much, I don't consider it creepy, rather, I consider it as good and amazing customer service reps who are passionate to work with you. They will run tests on your servers, they will set up "hello world" apps on your ruby/python services to show you how its deployed, etc. They debug your code and notify you when you tax the system abnormally, instead of closing your account... etc. By the way, MediaTemple admin panel is amazing... :)

Though, for sake of bang for buck, I'd go with DreamHost or HostGator... or again, Team 2502 will host you on our MediaTemple service..

You have more guts than me. I wouldn't do a whole site for an FRC team from scratch. Admittedly, I do websites for a living so the less time I can spend messing with HTML/CSS the happier I will be. Personally, I would use a CMS for the majority of your site. Not only does it allow you to spend more time on content (which is more important than being a custom designed thing) but it allows you to offload some of the content generation to other people. But don't let me sound like I am saying DON'T do it, just proposing an alternative.

I have to comment here, having your web server and your database on separate boxes should make very little difference. Where I work our database is on several different boxes and the limit is not the connection between the database and the server it was the amount of data one can cram down and internet tube. I'm not saying you are wrong in saying GoDaddy did not work for you but I do feel that perpetuating a rumor that having two different machines somehow impacts performance negatively would be wrong.

Sorry this post doesn't add any new hosting services.

While I've never hosted an FRC website with it, I've heard good things about FellowSites. Great support from a not-for-profit business with a customizable plan and flexible payment.

An old member of team 616 has a server with Dreamhost and offers free hosting to FRC teams. Go to http://www.usfirsthost.com/ to contact him about setting something up. He currently hosts 6 teams there.

Thankfully, one of our mentors in our first year (Overdrive), who is a tech staffer at our school, got in touch with CTC (local telecommunications company - telephone, websites, etc) and got us free hosting.

Personally I use Servage, though I wouldn't recommend it for hosting a team website.

For hosting a team website, I'd go with Dreamhost or probably any of the other options offered here. :)

We have been using Vivid-Hosting. Started by an alumnus of Team 968, this great Web Hosting Company has been extremely fast and reliable with their modern lightning-fast servers. Two thumbs up!

They have been providing game hosting & co-location services to major businesses for years, but their web hosting division is just starting. We are currently beta-testing the program and the experience has been excellent thus far. I believe they're planning on officially revealing the service toward the holiday after they finish their new website.

Hi,
Our team dosen't have a site yet (we're the first Australian team ;) ) but in my limited experience if you want to go from COMPLETE scrach and you know how to configure a server set up ftp, http, etc. Then http://www.rackspacecloud.com/ is quite good. It's designed around a pay-as-you-go system and it's quite cheap. They also offer a 30 day trial.

Thanks,
timytamy

I choose my hosting plan from the site TheWebPole.com and I am actually quite happy with their services. I tried them with a shared hosting plan and then as my site grew, I upgraded to VPS. Now I am using 3 VPS from them now - 2 of which is Linux and one is Windows.

Throw another vote of confidence in for GoDaddy. We host the websites for Los Pollos Locos and SCRIW there (plus a bunch of sites at work), all running Wordpress. (Which, if you're starting a website, I'd highly recommend looking at. MUCH simpler, and anyone can update it. That gets important when your guy that hard-codes everything either gets sick, gets busy with non-robotics things, or graduates.)

I'll throw my $0.02 in here.
We use http://bluehost.com for hosting our site, and it's done everything we've tried to do well. Their hosting plans are pretty good for their prices, too. Our server handles our custom written CMS just fine.

My only suggestion is to stay away from 1&1. We are currently looking for another host due a hack attack and like virtually no customer support.

I will also vouch for bluehost. If you do not feel like custom making a CMS, they have SimpleScripts setup for whatever you will need. I think the speed could be a little bit better, but for the price, I can't really complain. If you start to feel the stress from new users, I have heard good reviews about http://mediatemple.net from friends.

No matter which webhosting provider you go with you have to check first that they offer a deal that compliments your needs and that they have a good support service. You will definitely come across problems where you will need them.

The hack attack was 1&1's fault ?

We use WestHost, and it's awesome. EVERYTHING is customizable, even the php.ini file. I don't know how much it costs, but it's the best one I've seen. If you're just using html, and no php, then you might not need it, but if you ever switch over to the awesomeness that is server-side scripting, then it's my recommendation.

yeah.. i, as well as some people i know, are good with godaddy. been using quite a long time. fairly competitive with their rate and offers good features. as long as i am not having problems with godaddy, i am not switching hosts. :)

i also heard a lot of things about 1&1. i must say they are pretty famous for their very unsatisfactory customer support.

ebarker 11-09-2011 22:45

Re: Any good web hosting sites?

Years ago we used Godaddy which was fine for hosting non-databased oriented pages, simple html, etc. Then we did a site at GoDaddy with a mysql backend and they could not get the job done. Performance was lousy. Plus you could measure performance slow down from the middle of the night into the day as internet usage increased.

That was years ago and maybe they have their issues fixed.

We switched over to Bluehost as did several other people that I knew that had similiar problems at Godaddy.

Bluehost's performance has been excellent. The customer support has been stunningly good, better than everyone I deal with in any industry.
