Re: Web Competitors 2010

I am the new webmaster on the Creston High School robotics team, and will probably be the first to actually map it out. Up until now, it has been hopelessly outdated due to the lack of having an actual webmaster for two consecutive years. I am currently working on making it easier to navigate.

I was the webmaster for The Children of the Corn last year (Team 167). I don't know for sure if they're entering the contest this year, but I built a CMS for it and they've been updating every now and then, though much of it's still out of date.

Our site probably won't be finished until ship-date, which means the judges may or may not view the final site, but we're shorthanded this year.

Looking good so far, for it to be in Notepad++ only. Just a few suggestions for the "<head>" tag. Number one, those "<script>"s should go within the "<head></head>" combo. Number two, a "<title>TITLE GOES HERE</title>" in the head tag will go a long way. Search engines and people will love you more for it. :)

Also, in your footer, try putting links to each of those logos. I tried to click them, thinking they led somewhere, just like on the sponsors page. Clicking on logos are one of those things that people will try to do without thinking, and I'm sure your sponsors would appreciate the extra click-throughs. ;)

Are you using CMS's like Joomla or just coding yourself with Dreamweaver or what?
Just curious. Thanks.

1816 is currently running Drupal 6 with an extensive custom theme. I wrote the theme files by hand using Coda and Dreamweaver. It was rebuilt from scratch this summer. Most dynamic elements (I mean this as visual "flair" not server technology) on the pages are handled by some original JQuery code and some JQuery plugins (Lightbox2 and Superfish). The site is pretty much complete with a few content updates planned this March.

(Digging up an old conversation) I tend to stay away from Flash for a few reasons, one being that I don't know how to use it very well and also because site built entirely out of Flash are in my experience very very slow (Have you visited Adobe's site recently?), at least on my G5 iMac. It's important to remember that not everyone uses modern hardware and browsers. The percentage of people visiting the 1816 site using IE6 is still around 20%. Who knows how old/new those computers are? It makes it difficult to construct a website that works on every browser but it can be done.

Here is the Team 2655's new website: http://team2655.org/index.html#
It is a notepad website. Few bugs to be worked out and some content to be added but it's complete for the most part.
Please let me know if you have suggestions.

EDIT: I remember seeing the copywrite statement for the game animation somewhere on Chiefdelphi and now I can't find it. Can anyone lead me in the right direction?
