This is rather out-of-date, actually. It's getting a huge revamp for the 2010 season, which has already started. We're going to start moving over and changing our content as soon as I get a little more familiar with Drupal, which is what we're switching to. |

Re: Web Competitors 2010
Akash,
The blue and black are a little harsh. I would suggest taking the black out of some areas and replace it with either white or gray (different shades that are similar to black) might be nicer on the eyes but still stick with dark and blue. my thoughts brendan |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
Im with Brendan on that Akash. The drop down menus and maybe the menu bar its self could do with a lighter shade. The white on black I don't actually see a problem with though. And maybe take the blue tent off the picture at the top?

Re: Web Competitors 2010
On 1323's site, i'm not a fan of the 9 different sub-sites with no clear way to navigate between them. Once you pick a sub-site however, the content is great. I agree on the black and blue though. Might be easier to read in a different color.

The DiscoBots have won the Lone Star Regional Website award two years in a row.
Our team keeps the award winning site in mint condition to help other teams learn about our progress. We don't work on our 2010 website design until FIRST season starts (we like to play by the rules)! http://2009.discobots.org http://2008.discobots.org |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
Team 2502 is starting to build its website (currently, just me). I'm just setting up the site structure and whatnot. "Friedman Robotics" has not been decided and will probably change. I'll holler again when it's actually done... :)
www.team2502.com Also, we own www.teamrobot.org. That was our last year's site, but it's so lacking in design that I didn't want to really share it... :) Keehun |

Re: Web Competitors 2010
Akash, you might consider shifting those pictures to the sides of the content, or just removing them. Well...to be honest, actually, with content on that page they may distract less than they do now. So i'll hold judgement until some content is shown beneath.
So, i posted my link before, but haven't gotten anything :P so, AGAIN! http://team1538.com We took everyone's problems with the left hand nav and did away with them...by centering the navigation, then playing with a sub menu. I think it's getting pretty close, just needs some more page content. Specifically photos! Anything? |

Jason, I apologize for appearing to pick on your team's site. It does look nice and the content is top notch. Ignoring the fact that it is in Flash I would definitely say this website is wonderful. |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
I probably won't have anything much to do with it this year, since I'm in college this year, but I'll still throw my team's site into the mix:
http://d5robotics.org/ Still running the CMS I developed, so at least I'll leave a legacy :) |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
Quote:
I'd just like to take a moment to explain my choices: There's a wonderful backend to the site that you should see someday, which skirts past the expensive Flash editor itself. It's an entire CMS actually. Also the standard navigation methods hold up fine under most modern browsers, again due to the wonderful SWFAddress that implements custom URL and back-button support for Flash. I do like to consider myself reasonably competent though. I have Javascript, PHP and DOM experience, enough to have done this site in another way (Dojo?) but... why? What is SO wrong about Flash? I hear a lot about hating Flash, and I even addressed issues that people have about Flash (broken navigation, slow loading, poor layout, difficulty in editing) to the point where many visitors to the site say they had expected a Flash site to be much worse, and were pleasantly surprised. I had faith that I had resolved many of the problems, but I hear people still chanting those same issues as if I hadn't. It almost seems like blind hate. Or perhaps it is a hate for proprietary technology, an opinion I do not subscribe to. My methodology may frustrate other developers who like standards, but I used Flash because it works, and a solution that works and meets the needs of my team (and ends up winning awards!) is a perfectly fine solution to me. If the solution had required standard HTML, I would've met that need as well. However, with new emerging platforms like HTML 5 and integrated video, I do hope it will be replaced eventually. Who knows what my team can come up with? I have faith! |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
Quote:
You particular site did not fall prey to many of the the problems that Flash causes but those problems are still prevalent in others. I will admit I was quite surprised that not only was the site pleasant enough to use it had top notch content I'll say it again, TOP Notch Content, this is the primary failing of Flash based sites in my opinion, too often people spend a lot of time making them pretty and, for want of a better term, flashy but neglect the content. Don't let my criticisms of your choice of a solution take away from the awards, you and your team have put a lot of work into that site, it shows. If all Flash based sites had the quality yours does perhaps my only real gripe with Flash would be that Adobe doesn't know how to write a plugin for OS X that doesn't use 50+% of my cpu. |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
What about public computers that don't have flash or not the correct version installed? Having it as your WHOLE site is a little risky, as computers are getting weaker and weaker (netbooks) and some can't handle flash well. But like andrew said, i like your site, just i dont like the way its delivered

As soon as I saw the site, I immediately thought about HTML5 and CSS3. With all that new web standards will offer for us, I think that whole site can be done with just HTML5 and CSS3 for markup/style. However, that's a whole another time to worry about. As much as I hate incompetent flash websites, sometimes, sites like yours are a real treat to come across sometimes. Keep up the AWESOME work. Just keep in mind that everything has its context and everything has its reasons. Some sites are meant to be implemented through standards and others not so much. Perhaps robotics site in flash wasn't the best idea, but as it stands, I don't think it's a problem that you did it in flash. Keehun Team 2502 |

Re: Web Competitors 2010
What are most teams using to make their website?
Are you using CMS's like Joomla or just coding yourself with Dreamweaver or what? Just curious. Thanks. |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
We use MediaWiki for team1640.com. This allows any of the student and mentors to edit pages and add content. It also allows us to link pages together quickly so you can move from topic to topic. Lastly it gives me a way to roll things back to a prior state, so if "something bad" happens, I can easily fix it.
While we don't have the flash and dazzle (or dancing flying exploding pigs) of other sites, we do have a lot of content. I tell our students it's all about the content, not about the flash. Mediawiki will allow you to change the skins so you can get your team colors, etc. We have 182 pages of content (text information pages) that have 1284(*) pictures and or documents attached (embedded) into them. I'd say that 99% of our pictures have captions attached to them (who, what, etc) All of our prior year engineering documents are on-line. This year we will make daily updates to the build season info. We will try to capture what happened on the prior day of build and what is planned for today's build. Each sub-team (electrical, mechanical, drive, etc) will post what their group is doing. I highly recommend Mediawiki for site management. (*) 1180 pictures are the last five years of build / compete. We try to put up just the good pictures rather than uploading the 15,000 that get taken every season. |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
I hand-code our website. Not with DreamWeaver - by hand.
I'm also stuck designing the darn thing too, so it's a slow process (given a website print, I can have a functioning site up and running in an hour or two). Though I wish I had the time and motivation to put the website into a CMS. |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
Our webmaster is working on fixing alot of the broken links.
And we should probably sort through the 1500 some odd pictures we have in our photo gallery. www.fusd1robotics.org |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
Miss Daisy revamped her website last year and won at San Diego:
http://www.team341.com We currently only use a CMS, Wordpress, for the News section as I like to have the team members write recaps of our events and such. As for the rest of the site, I have one main student who types out code by hand in Dreamweaver (woo code completion!). Bless her. As for other CMS', I don't have any experience with Joomla, Drupal, etc but have a feeling that I will get there in the near future. Either that or I'll get so sick with those that I'll develop a simple one on my own. I also have had experience with SurrealCMS which is easy as pie to set up. One of my freelance clients uses it and has had no issues. Oh, and I am also anti-Flash for all of the above mentioned reasons. :-P |
Re: Web Competitors 2010
Here is our current site.
http://waialuarobotics.com. It gets updated at least bi-weekly with events, updates and changes such as sponsorship changes/additions. It also features our newly created VEX team that includes 8th graders as well (since we are 7-12 school). I have written several large complex level grants recently and we hope to get them as they range from 2-5 years which would setup our team for the next several years. |

(Digging up an old conversation) I tend to stay away from Flash for a few reasons, one being that I don't know how to use it very well and also because site built entirely out of Flash are in my experience very very slow (Have you visited Adobe's site recently?), at least on my G5 iMac. It's important to remember that not everyone uses modern hardware and browsers. The percentage of people visiting the 1816 site using IE6 is still around 20%. Who knows how old/new those computers are? It makes it difficult to construct a website that works on every browser but it can be done. |

Re: Web Competitors 2010
Ours is a work in progress, but it's getting a lot closer to completion. Most of the pages that say they will be coming soon are almost ready to be uploaded. We're running off of a template this year because our original webmaster graduated last year and the last of the others who have some experience are graduating this year. I've been finding ways to get around the template and mess with the code a lot, and I've been training newbies in as I go so hopefully it will be sustainable.
