This is rather out-of-date, actually. It's getting a huge revamp for the 2010 season, which has already started. We're going to start moving over and changing our content as soon as I get a little more familiar with Drupal, which is what we're switching to.

1323's will also be getting a slight face-lift for 2010. We need to fix up the colors and whatnot. Most people have suggested that the black and blue is a bit harsh on the eyes. Feedback please? Since neither of us is a web designer we just went with what looked decent so far.

(Yes we even work together on the site) lol

Also, if we could get some feedback on the MORT site ideas I'd really really appreciate it. - http://rothystyle.carbonmade.com/projects/11933

Re: Web Competitors 2010

Akash,

The blue and black are a little harsh. I would suggest taking the black out of some areas and replace it with either white or gray (different shades that are similar to black) might be nicer on the eyes but still stick with dark and blue.

my thoughts

Rion Atkinson 10-11-2009 00:16

Re: Web Competitors 2010

Im with Brendan on that Akash. The drop down menus and maybe the menu bar its self could do with a lighter shade. The white on black I don't actually see a problem with though. And maybe take the blue tent off the picture at the top?

On 1323's site, i'm not a fan of the 9 different sub-sites with no clear way to navigate between them. Once you pick a sub-site however, the content is great. I agree on the black and blue though. Might be easier to read in a different color.

This is what we mentioned earlier. Switching up shades and adding in white. It still stays with your teams colors, but different sections are easier to distinguish and nice on the eyes. So you have what fomerlyfamous and i mentioned earlier. :)

Im no professional designer but I don't like the sheer amount of vertical space taken up by those pictures. If they are unique to the media page that would be fine but if they are going to be on all the pages it could be a real problem for those of us who tend to use smaller windows while browsing. I do like the overall feel though.

Nice site. I like the interface and the navigation is Innovative but I'm not a fan of flash. Also when you click on on of the updates on the home page it takes a while to get back to the home. You might want to add a back to home button, so it's easier. But other than that you have good colors, and a clean site. Job well done.

This site bugs me, because of the non-conventional approach to designing it. But my crazy opinion. But if you like it, then its great! plus it looks nice too.
LWakefield, i dont know if its just an unspoken rule, but never say welcome and front page. and never do it in the same sentence ;) The title should have your team number in it, because when i go to bookmark it, it will be so vague. But otherwise lookin good!

I have a rant about Flash and I beg that people NOT use it for websites. It breaks the standard method of navigating and it requires closed source, proprietary technology to edit it. Flash is great for streaming videos but for designing your main website should probably be avoided. I saw nothing there that a reasonably competent person couldn't do using Javascript and DOM Manipulation.

Jason, I apologize for appearing to pick on your team's site. It does look nice and the content is top notch. Ignoring the fact that it is in Flash I would definitely say this website is wonderful.

Although i have graduated. I still like to see how things are going.

I'd just like to take a moment to explain my choices:
There's a wonderful backend to the site that you should see someday, which skirts past the expensive Flash editor itself. It's an entire CMS actually. Also the standard navigation methods hold up fine under most modern browsers, again due to the wonderful SWFAddress that implements custom URL and back-button support for Flash.

I do like to consider myself reasonably competent though. I have Javascript, PHP and DOM experience, enough to have done this site in another way (Dojo?) but... why? What is SO wrong about Flash?

I hear a lot about hating Flash, and I even addressed issues that people have about Flash (broken navigation, slow loading, poor layout, difficulty in editing) to the point where many visitors to the site say they had expected a Flash site to be much worse, and were pleasantly surprised. I had faith that I had resolved many of the problems, but I hear people still chanting those same issues as if I hadn't. It almost seems like blind hate. Or perhaps it is a hate for proprietary technology, an opinion I do not subscribe to.

My methodology may frustrate other developers who like standards, but I used Flash because it works, and a solution that works and meets the needs of my team (and ends up winning awards!) is a perfectly fine solution to me. If the solution had required standard HTML, I would've met that need as well.

However, with new emerging platforms like HTML 5 and integrated video, I do hope it will be replaced eventually. Who knows what my team can come up with? I have faith!

First off, thank you for replying. Second, I was by no means saying you were incompetent because you used Flash, merely remarking that now, with the advent of AJAX and DOM manipulation it is possible to do nearly 100% of the things that Flash does.

You particular site did not fall prey to many of the the problems that Flash causes but those problems are still prevalent in others. I will admit I was quite surprised that not only was the site pleasant enough to use it had top notch content I'll say it again, TOP Notch Content, this is the primary failing of Flash based sites in my opinion, too often people spend a lot of time making them pretty and, for want of a better term, flashy but neglect the content.

Don't let my criticisms of your choice of a solution take away from the awards, you and your team have put a lot of work into that site, it shows. If all Flash based sites had the quality yours does perhaps my only real gripe with Flash would be that Adobe doesn't know how to write a plugin for OS X that doesn't use 50+% of my cpu.

The install base of Flash is not insignificant, and was large enough to warrant taking the risk. In case Flash is not available, the site will offer a mobile version that contains the same content minus videos and high bandwidth media. Performance testing (mainly looking up the site on a junk computer) has yielded positive results with tolerable performance overhead.

Remember that optimizing performance and accessibility was one of the main goals. If I couldn't do that, I would never have touched Flash.

As Firefox is the most standards compliant browser out there, your code should be optimized to work in it. :)

Code:

<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" --><!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
&lt;!-------- MainBody --&gt;

Your HTML code appears to have the comment written with the characters for less than and greater than rather than the actual < and > symbols, hence why it displays on the page. The comments above are properly formatted. Perhaps your CMS is automatically converting said symbols?

Billy, let me start off by saying that I have had Flash experience since 12 years of age and that you're way past calling yourself just "competent." Even though I have Flash experience, it would have taken we a long time to develop what you have developed there.

As soon as I saw the site, I immediately thought about HTML5 and CSS3. With all that new web standards will offer for us, I think that whole site can be done with just HTML5 and CSS3 for markup/style. However, that's a whole another time to worry about.

As much as I hate incompetent flash websites, sometimes, sites like yours are a real treat to come across sometimes. Keep up the AWESOME work. Just keep in mind that everything has its context and everything has its reasons. Some sites are meant to be implemented through standards and others not so much. Perhaps robotics site in flash wasn't the best idea, but as it stands, I don't think it's a problem that you did it in flash.

Re: Web Competitors 2010

We use MediaWiki for team1640.com. This allows any of the student and mentors to edit pages and add content. It also allows us to link pages together quickly so you can move from topic to topic. Lastly it gives me a way to roll things back to a prior state, so if "something bad" happens, I can easily fix it.

While we don't have the flash and dazzle (or dancing flying exploding pigs) of other sites, we do have a lot of content. I tell our students it's all about the content, not about the flash. Mediawiki will allow you to change the skins so you can get your team colors, etc.

We have 182 pages of content (text information pages) that have 1284(*) pictures and or documents attached (embedded) into them. I'd say that 99% of our pictures have captions attached to them (who, what, etc) All of our prior year engineering documents are on-line.

This year we will make daily updates to the build season info. We will try to capture what happened on the prior day of build and what is planned for today's build. Each sub-team (electrical, mechanical, drive, etc) will post what their group is doing.

I highly recommend Mediawiki for site management.

(*) 1180 pictures are the last five years of build / compete. We try to put up just the good pictures rather than uploading the 15,000 that get taken every season.

http://www.team341.com

We currently only use a CMS, Wordpress, for the News section as I like to have the team members write recaps of our events and such. As for the rest of the site, I have one main student who types out code by hand in Dreamweaver (woo code completion!). Bless her.

As for other CMS', I don't have any experience with Joomla, Drupal, etc but have a feeling that I will get there in the near future. Either that or I'll get so sick with those that I'll develop a simple one on my own.

I also have had experience with SurrealCMS which is easy as pie to set up. One of my freelance clients uses it and has had no issues.

Oh, and I am also anti-Flash for all of the above mentioned reasons. :-P

Talon 540's website:
http://www.team540.com/

In the past years our websites have been mostly HTML and made using dreamweaver but this year we decided to go with Joomla, a content management system. I am quite happy with it and there are a lot of capabilities for it. Its still a work in progress but let me know what you guys think.

The 2424 web site is http://bixbyrobotics.org.

I just realized that I have a few updates to make...:o I use Zend Studio for web sites, it is a PHP editor with excellent code completion and syntax highlighting features.

I am the new webmaster on the Creston High School robotics team, and will probably be the first to actually map it out. Up until now, it has been hopelessly outdated due to the lack of having an actual webmaster for two consecutive years. I am currently working on making it easier to navigate.

I was the webmaster for The Children of the Corn last year (Team 167). I don't know for sure if they're entering the contest this year, but I built a CMS for it and they've been updating every now and then, though much of it's still out of date.

Our site probably won't be finished until ship-date, which means the judges may or may not view the final site, but we're shorthanded this year.

Looking good so far, for it to be in Notepad++ only. Just a few suggestions for the "<head>" tag. Number one, those "<script>"s should go within the "<head></head>" combo. Number two, a "<title>TITLE GOES HERE</title>" in the head tag will go a long way. Search engines and people will love you more for it. :)

Also, in your footer, try putting links to each of those logos. I tried to click them, thinking they led somewhere, just like on the sponsors page. Clicking on logos are one of those things that people will try to do without thinking, and I'm sure your sponsors would appreciate the extra click-throughs. ;)

Just curious. Thanks.

1816 is currently running Drupal 6 with an extensive custom theme. I wrote the theme files by hand using Coda and Dreamweaver. It was rebuilt from scratch this summer. Most dynamic elements (I mean this as visual "flair" not server technology) on the pages are handled by some original JQuery code and some JQuery plugins (Lightbox2 and Superfish). The site is pretty much complete with a few content updates planned this March.

(Digging up an old conversation) I tend to stay away from Flash for a few reasons, one being that I don't know how to use it very well and also because site built entirely out of Flash are in my experience very very slow (Have you visited Adobe's site recently?), at least on my G5 iMac. It's important to remember that not everyone uses modern hardware and browsers. The percentage of people visiting the 1816 site using IE6 is still around 20%. Who knows how old/new those computers are? It makes it difficult to construct a website that works on every browser but it can be done.

EDIT: I remember seeing the copywrite statement for the game animation somewhere on Chiefdelphi and now I can't find it. Can anyone lead me in the right direction?

Just wondering, has anybody here found the submit website page, I've looked, but with no success.

Also how are you planning to go above and beyond with your website (ie handicap accessible website)

Re: Web Competitors 2010

Ours is a work in progress, but it's getting a lot closer to completion. Most of the pages that say they will be coming soon are almost ready to be uploaded. We're running off of a template this year because our original webmaster graduated last year and the last of the others who have some experience are graduating this year. I've been finding ways to get around the template and mess with the code a lot, and I've been training newbies in as I go so hopefully it will be sustainable.

Anyway, here's team 2207's website: www.whitebearlakerobotics.com

What might help a little with readability is some compound sentences ;) See how every sentence in the first paragraph starts with "FIRST_____"? It feels somewhat choppy when I'm reading it in my head.

Suggestion:
"Team 2883 is based in Warroad, Minnesota. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology") was founded by Dean Kamen to expose young people to science, technology, and engineering. FIRST is an amazing program and is an eye-opening experience for everyone."

Fewer periods, more commas (in the right places), and easier to read.

This was probably very funny to watch me visit this site. My eyes went wide with the cool animation, then i sat there for about 5 mintues trying to figure out where the rest of the site was. Your enter button was literally JUST below my screen and i didnt see it when i tried to scroll. you might want to include a script to recognize how big the screen is so that if is to big then the enter button gets pushed to the side of the video. but it looks nice :)

It's funny, you wouldn't think that the hardest part would be keeping the content updated, but it requires more work than a jquery gallery!

I think you should check the FIRST Logo restrictions again. You are violating them in several places.
