What is the verb that goes with Coopertition?
 

English Majors please forgive me if I'm not asking the question correctly...

But...

If I'm engaged in a competition, I'm competing.

If I'm being cooperative, I'm cooperating.

So... If I'm engaged in a FIRST Coopertition... what am I doing (in one word)?

Cooperteting?
Competerating?

I'm up for suggestions.

I generally go with one or the other, as I'm usually either competing (on the field) or cooperating (off). If I'm doing both, I'm "being graciously professional" :P.

If I had to pick one I'd go with John's.

You have no idea how long a colleague of mine and I discussed this VERY thing about six weeks ago preparing to deliver a conference presentation. He posed the question to me and after almost a full day of back and forth, like the veteran English teacher I am, I chickened out and suggested a workaround description.

However, out of what's here so far, I like JVN's choice.

JVN's is probably the best but I think that if we tweaked the pronunciation of Dave's we might be onto something since it is much simpler to spell and isn't quite as visually intimidating.

If you mean for a translation into the infinitive form (Spanish) then I can't help you. But I do think there is a verb in English. In fact you said it yourself. :p

Seeing as the word gets its first half from cooperation and second from competition to form "coopertition," the verb must be the same way...

cooperating and competing

So it can only be one of four ways: coopereting, cooperting, coopeeting, or coopeting

However, I agree with dlavery, liking the second best.

So far my favorite, although totally impractical answer is:
I'm leaning torward Co-opeting pronounced Co-op-eet'-ing.

I can see it now at a competition...
Adult to students- What are you doing?
Student 1 - We're co-operpeting!
Student 2 - No, we're co-opertating!
Student 3 - You're both wrong! We're co-operting!
Student 1 - No I'm right!
Student 2 - No way! We are definitely co-opertating!
and so on, until...
Adult - I don't think it matters whatever you are trying to say, shouldn't you all be driving the robot?

I'm going to go with Dave here.

You used different forms of the base words in your examples. The equivalents are (noun - adjective - verb):

Cooperation - Cooperative - Cooperating
Competition - Competitive - Competing

So by combining the common parts you get:
Coopertition - Coopertitive - Cooperting

Note that the adjective form is different than the verb form (as it is in competitive and competing)

I thought I'd resurrect this thread , since it's such an integral part of this year's game. We forgot to include the true verb tense, which would be (by the reasoning above) "to cooperte". Thus, in asking the opposing alliance if they would like to join you on the coopertition bridge, the correctly phrased question should be "Would you like to cooperte with us?".

From what I had heard, the Coopertition aspect is referring to the mix of competition and cooperation. Balancing on the Coopertition bridge only only involves the cooperating aspect, therefore the verb is just cooperating. I'm not entirely sure if that is correct, but I heard it somewhere. Haha:)
