Samsung LCD HDTV Problems?
 

Hey peoples.

I got a Samsung 26" HDTV back in May for my birthday. (It's been great...)

Tonight, I turn it on to check the Wii... Nothing. Screen is absolutely black.


Some online research tells me this means the TV's backlight is dead.
And that Samsung allegedly does this on purpose, to fail ~1 and some years after purchase (right after warranty expires).

Has anyone else on here had this problem? If so, what did you do?

As for me, I've gotta wait til tomorrow for my dad to look for the Wal-Mart receipt from May (so that we could either take it in, or get help through Samsung).
Now I can't watch movies in bed! :(

A completely black screen on an LCD usually points at the back light. Although manufacturers sometimes use or design sub assemblies that are on the fringe of normal operating parameters, few will intentionally design products that way any more. The back light in an LCD is a critical part and usually takes the form of a CFL (cold cathode fluorescent) bulb. This type requires a high voltage supply (DC to DC convertor) to work and it is the supply that most likely has failed.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge here in NY City that you can own for real cheap.

Let's just say that statement is true, ignoring the technical challenges involved in such a thing. 80% or more of their TVs failed just out of warranty.

Would you buy a new Samsung TV to replace it?

No?

Then how long you think they'll be in business with nobody buying a second TV?

Anyone in business knows the way to build sales is to have high reliability, not low. So, barring any credible evidence to the contrary, what you wrote is surely a myth, not worth repeating.

I haven't had any problems with my Samsung in the 15ish months I've owned it.
