Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

I'm thinking that it has something to do with light sensitivity with Black vs. white.. Look at how the color changes from top to bottom.
However, it would seriously mess with the robots if there were spectators wearing white/black or grey..
As for the reflective surface, i agree with ice.. but it might possibly be some sort of shiny metal, since ice is normally white, even under such lighting conditions.

Bad part about getting the hint on the 24th is we can't ask teachers what they think. My math teacher told me it looked like a ceiling jack. I went googling and found this picture.

I think that this will be a 2v2v2 year, and each robot is bolted to its alliance member with one of these things.

You know what that could be really interesting... and could bring more robots into the playoffs if they bring back the 3 team alliances with a backup bot that has to play a certain number of times.

Maybe the backup bot is what is connected to the lexan? They could be dragged along for the ride, but not functioning.

Ok, maybe a little silly, but it would be really cool to see FIRST Voltron style.

But Dave already figured that out for the curling game. 2010 is a Winter Olympics year, just thought to point that out. :p

Maybe the fact that it is a 3D rendering is hinting that there are going to be more three-dimensional elements to the field surface, like ramps or uneven terrain.

If the lip's made of quarter inch lexan that can take a 125 pound force with a safety factor of 2, I think it would be plenty stable.

But if a robot is driving and runs in to it with more than 125 pounds of force there would be broken lexan all over the feild and replacing it every few rounds would be annoying...

Lexan cracks, it doesn't shatter like glass.

Perhaps it is above driving level?

That could be plausible, and they have to be pushed up to a certain height with something on them? And the glass around the field last year was 1/4'' lexan, and it held up fairly well. I couldn't imagine why it wouldn't hold this year, excluding the change in friction. The lexan took a beating this year with all the crashing and pushing. Assuming a high or regular friction this year, would the lexan really take that much more abuse?

1086VEX 04-01-2010 21:33

Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

ive been staring at this thing ever since it came out and i think the key part is the lexan. why would they use lexan instead of aluminum or steel plates? im guessing (because of the holes in the lexan) that something will be mounted to it. And if it was a piece thats going to be directly interacted with by the robots, lexan probably wouldnt have been used because of the possibility of it cracking. so, my guess is that whatever is mounted to it will be something that needs to bee seen from all sides (hence the clear lexan)...something along the lines of a traking light or a becon of somekind.

But the thing is, would FRC really recycle messing with elevation? I mean, as awesome as it was for robots lifting themselves up, it's been done. Unless the theme is to get a piece of every past competition :ahh:

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed or commented on this (I didn't feel like reading the entire feed) but has anyone else noticed that there seems to be a second sort of shadow which doesn't belong to the part? It's more visible when the picture has been inverted... around the middle (see thumbnail).
There's another thread on CD about Dave's "hint" that nothing is as what it seems to be... what if this is referring to the hint? Maybe we're meant to look at what is not as visible as the part itself. I could even be that the part is just a means of distracting us from this other thing, or discoloration in the picture.
If this shadow/thing is what we're meant to be looking at, what could it be? I have thought possibly a ramp, or some sort of terrain to add to the field.
Just food for thought :)

Rob.

I don't see how it would be adjustable. There are two pins on either sides that snap into other tubes, but those holes in the center are for attaching the plastic piece, not for sliding, right?

I agree with you
It is possible that the robots will need to dock onto it, and if the attachment to the robot has a cone shape, it will be very simple to do so without pushing in the springloaded pins

It's maybe where you are going to sort the "cans", "plastic" and "cardboard" into chutes.

Necromonger 05-01-2010 01:50

Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

the interesting thing is that the poles look like they ate telescoping, but with the bolts inside there isn't much room for extra metal. This leads me to believe that there may be small springs in the ends of the center tubes, which might be to absorb impact. Also, considering the winter olympics are this year it may pertain to a sport to be played at the games. Also, note the curve in the plastic. Track? Runnners? If it pertains to a spart, it most likely involves skating. The field could possibly be made of ice, but it's unlikely because there would be too much risk of short circuiting. Not the holes on the underside of the pole ends. the reflective white surface most likely means ice, or winter. the underside holes might mean robots braced together, which would reinforce the idea of springs.

Necromonger 05-01-2010 01:52

Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

This could also be a very large object, and the so called spring loaded pins could be axels.

Necromonger 05-01-2010 01:56

Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

If the parts are axels, add wheels and tank treads. easily put on if parts have springs, and it would also mean terrain. and being winter games year could mean skiing...

My wild guess:

Maybe not related to the hint, unless the pictured item is a syringe, but how about something to do with viruses and vaccinations? This allows for offense (infecting the opposition) and defense (fighting the virus). Could use different colored objects and you could score antibiotics on yourself or viruses on the opposition. Winner is the one with more antibiotics than viruses.

It's a part of the launch platform to keep the robot upright until the solid fuel boosters ignite. Last years "Lunacy" game developed the necessary drivetrain, and now we're going to the moon! Awesome!

U know at the regional we went to we had complaints about how the Plexiglas was too reflexive so my guess is we r probably dealing with somthing that is reflexive like that. know playing on ice will b hard to do cuse not all of the arenas r on ice most of them are on concrete. so thats improbable.

Just to take things in a different direction...

What if the game hint is only to get you to focus on the "pins" as so many have called them.

And in fact even Bill in his blog has mentioned pinning the game down. Right Here!

And thinking of pins where do you find "pins"? Bowling.

So now we have bowling or something close... oh whats this?
Robot scoring?!?!? well then Bill is giving a lot of clues. Bill's Post!

and of course the game wouldnt be entertaining to all ages, without some sliding robot action. Bill talks about GDC discussing traction mechanisms on his post here!

So I think the keyword here folks is "Pins"

3days 16hours 58 minutes 30sec left to kickoff

RoboMaster 05-01-2010 17:11

Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

I don't think that this is very vaguely related to the actual game. Remember, the GDC is cruel, but they have given hints that are very direct (but still can be interpreted in many ways). Remember 2008's IR receiver? This very much looks like a field element and it is CADed up, not like a picture or anything. I'm going with that this directly related to the game somehow.

It does kind of look like one of those mini bowling frames, without the bowling pins.
Also whenever I look at this, it reminds me of army camouflage, so maybe something that has to do with army.

Not necessarily. You would get more surface area, but at the same time you'd reduce your pressure by the same amount, so the overall traction would remain the same (at least theoretically).

Hey, alright well my idea I'm sticking with unless kickoff tells me wrong; but i think it is going to have something to do with "go-green". I'm not sure really how the shapes pretain to it quite yet but these games tend to revolve around what is going on in the world right now. Last year "lunar" NASA was really big last year, well right now "go-green" is a big, so maybe we are going to do a game based on anything that revolves around that. Just my input.

Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

So, seeing as there are only 4 days untill kickoff, and i have nothing better to do until then...

FREE ASSOCIATION TIME!!!1!

The two longish objects along the sides of the piece seem to be tubes.

The internet is a series of tubes.

E-mails travel along the tubes of the internets, and also in letter form through vacuum tubes in some older office buildings.

Vacuums and other suction devices were ruled as illegal in 2009 due to potential damage to the regolith.

A vacuum is also a type of cleaning device, which could be used to clean the regolith after a long day of play, or to clean donut crumbs from the floor of the GDC uber-secret design bunker after a long night of conspiracy.

Another cleaning implement is a bottle of Windex.

Windex could be used to clean those smudges from the reflection on the Lexan on the game hint object so that the true meaning of the hint would be visible.

My computer screen is fairly smudged from contact with my greasy, unwashed forehead during moments of confusion and frustration while attempting to decipher the game hint.

The internet is visible through by computer screen.

The internet is clearly a series of tubes.

Thus, the game piece contains TUBES, which are clearly visible...on the side..of...the...piece.

Drat.

The game hint is undecipherable.

I'm going to go back to my lair and cry in misery now...

A lot of people mention that it is telescoping, but my friend pointed out if you look behind the clear peice, you can see the edge of the shadow of the metal tubing in the front AND back. Guessing it slides back and forth on the metal tubes, with stoppers in the front and back... Wonder what it's for. The next hint shows a carpeted playing field...

thats because it looks like the longer piece slides through and the tabs on the end act as stops so it doesnt slide through and out.

It looks like an ajustable forklift of some kind that would go on the end of the bot. With hint 2 in mind, it might be possible that we will have to lift things of different sizes over a railing of some kind.

a ROBOT BOT! We have to build a robot capable of lifting a robot onto the field.

That object looks an awful lot like an axis camera mount....

Anyone else hear Dean mention a soccer ball in his speech?

:D

Maybe we are on the right "track".

I caught that too. Intentional or not it was definately a reference.

It's also a world cup year, and Kamen was emphasizing cooperation with the "sports model."

Looks like this clue 1 piece was part of the ball return track system the human player uses with the trident!
Awesome.

Sounds a bit familiar, but not used the exact same way I suggested in the second half of my idea here: :)

Still seems like a nice challenge!

So are we supposed to use regualtion wheels, like last year?

Re: [BB] 2010 Game Hint #1

No, there are no restrictions on wheels that I can find.

I also noticed that this piece can be found in two places on the return track, apparently supporting a cable.

If you look on the ball return ramp, you will see it is made up of many of these.

Look at the underside of the ball returns. There are not one, but 2 pieces like this there--they attach the ball return sections and the cable that runs underneath for extra support.

It's like the other hint: A piece of the field.
