Team 135 Field Done!

As always team 135 has the field done on the first day. At 11 pm, we added the last piece and called it complete.

We do not have foam, because it had to be ordered.

We only have one upright and a tunnel at the other bump, only one end of the field.

Quick construction! Thanks for putting pics up, it's nice to be able to see it when I couldn't make it to the Kickoff. :)

That is an amzing feat to complete it so quickly. How many people did you have working on it?

I second this, it's amazing how quickly you guys built this.

I'm jealous, I wish we had a place to build our own field.

I wonder which team this week will claim their bot is finished and ask to use your field.

Nice work, 135. Can you let us know how much of the far part of the field isn't viewable from your alliance station because of the bumps?

Do you think that the robot arm on the right side of the first photo helped?

Sweet job guys, I'm jealous.

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

We had around 10 parents and the normal 5 mentors there to build it. There is little to no visual obstuction of the far wall.

Our goal is always to have it up before we do any planning.

yeah same here, its a rule that students have to do wayy more work than the mentors ;) after all, that is what first is about......

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

Let me clarify, what was stated before was in addition to the entire student team, minus the 2-5 who went to the kickoff.

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

It's only the field, though, so while the students could still learn when building the field, there should be nothing wrong with the adults handling it.

Where did you order the memory foam?

Great job, it looks great!

Where did you order the foam, I cannot find any info on it in the FIRST drawings or field description.

We were thinking of buying a Mattress Topper from Costco or Sams. I saw one on Amazon too but am not sure how thick it should be. Seems we can get 1.5 - 3 inches thick. Also foam desity varies with supplier.

Wow that is amazing!

Team 2502 was kicked out of our high school at 8PM without any advance notice. Monday morning will be some hectic cleaning before classes start ;-)

The pics were kind of small so I couldn't tell for sure, but it looks like there are no vision targets on that field. Could you not determine the dimensions of the target? I don't see anything in the drawings that give the target dimensions.

The vision target dimensions are in section 6 of the manual. The target has an outer diameter of 42" and each circle (white-black-white) is 4" wide.

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

It's in the rules, section 6.2.6.

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

The field is not difficult to build this year. I made a quarter of the field in about 10 hours with only one other person helping.

Best of luck teams.

fsgond 11-01-2010 13:23

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

I will have to get back to you on the foam, one of the students on the team said that we had ordered it and I will look into it.

And about facebook at school, you should make friends with your IT department, maybe get them as one of the mentors. I say that because I work for the IT department for our team's school, and they do get special treatment since I am a mentor.

great job and fantastic turnaround! About how much do you think you spent on materials for the field?

We spent around $400. That is only raw materials.

We found over the years that it's the students who concentrate on the important things (brainstorming, designing, prototyping, building, etc.), and the parents / mentors handle the drudge things (inventorying the KoP, building the field, making the Depot runs, etc.)

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

Be wary, this can turn into a mentor/student build debate easily. If that's on your mind, I suggest searching any of the numerous wars (oops, threads) on here for the opinions previously posted.

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

A decision by our students were that it was to be a studentr run team. They decide what they want to do and the mentors guide them in what they are doing. My favorite questions are, "What did we learn" and "What do YOU want to do next". If they are stuck I will give them some insite on what I think would be good. This program is about the students, not allowing them in on every step cheats them of the good that FIRST is about. Make them feel as though they are in full control of what happens.

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

I have a question on the goals.

Is the height of the outside ramp the same as the height as the inside ramp where the two come together.

From the drawings, it looks like the outside ramp is a little taller, creating a "drop" as the ball would roll over and into the goal area.

ken.3038 17-01-2010 12:17

Re: Team 135 Field Done!

Can you tell me the height of the ball return at its highest point. I know the tower is 7' and its 18' from center of bumper to alliance wall. What is the distance from the wall to the beginning of the ball return.
