Call up Pro/E files in SolidWorks

As a SolidWorks CAD designer, I want to remind (inform) people that most of the part files available for Pro/E will open in SolidWorks just fine. No need to spend time creating most of the 3D parts.

Just download the Pro/E files (from FIRST's site) to your computer, open SolidWorks, and do a file open and ensure it is looking for *.* Then you will see all of the Pro/E files. It will do a quick file conversion. It will ask for features or body. Features is more robust but usually not needed. I suggest "body" unless you plan on changing a CAD file. For purchased, off the shelf, parts we usually have no need to change dimensions.

These imported parts may or may not come in with materials.

You can set materials by right-click on the Materials tab in the FeatureManager.

You can also set the exact weight in Tools, MassProperties.

Watch out for little descrepencies with imported geometery, when I imported the AM0204, and set material to Al 5052 I got 1.2 pounds but Andy Mark states it is 1.4. Use a scale for the exact weight.

On thing nice about imported geometry, it makes your assembly model very light weight. Saves time.

Dont spend your time recreating purchased kit parts - you have an arm to design!
