RoboProm 2010

Hello all,

On behalf of Team 399, I would like to announce that we will be hosting our 4th Annual RoboProm this year at the National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. Since its inception, the attendance to the event has doubled every year. Last year close to 500 people attended. This year, we're hoping to get approximately 1000 people to come and enjoy the fun.

We're wondering about prices. Last year we did $16 at the door and $12 pre-sale. Because the room needs to be twice as large (and we'll probably need twice as much punch), we've raised the prices slightly for $15 pre-sale and $20 at the door. Let us know if this is acceptable, although a real prom is close to $120 (depending on the school) and this prom is 1000000 x pi more fun!

Good luck with the rest of the build season!

Team 399 Representative
Rene Haro

Man i really wanted to go to the roboprom 2 years ago when 1388 (The other eagle robotics) was in Atlanta, but we were too far away to get there. Hope to see you there this year though!

People seriously pay more than like $20 for a prom? Like, really?

Anyway, Roboprom was a ton of fun the last two years I went. I guess I'm a (17 year old) college student now, and the new 1000 - person size is a bit intimidating, but I recommend it to anyone. Especially if you don't normally go to school dances or whatever.

I know if my team is attending championship, their going to have to miss their school prom. This shooed do pretty well.

I know i'll be attending, even as a mentor. This event is seriously fun and a good way to relax on a Thursday night.

Also, I call dibs on wearing a hat that looks like a tower

Re: RoboProm 2010

I had my one and only chance going to the roboprom last year, but ditched the idea at the last moment when I realized that I'd have to be totally focused with the competition the following day. Because our team, which came all the way from winning first place in the Israel regional, was quite small, and I had to fill in about 2-3 roles at the same time during the whole competition. I'm really sorry I didn't go to the prom, but I didn't really have any say about it anway, because the whole team had to be together all the time. :(

1923 went to RoboProm last year, and it was amazing. I'd recommend it to anyone. I hope 1923 goes again, and if 229 goes I'll try to see if the kids can/want to go. It's so much fun! If either team goes, I'm totally going as a mentor chaperone!

My team hasn't been to Atlanta for several years, so I've never had the opportunity to go, but I've heard that it's loads of fun! If the tables turn and 1189 makes it down there this year, I'll definitely find some way to attend. With a really awesome dress (right, Libby? [: ).

We have fun as mentors too while we are there. There is something for everyone while you are at the event. Usually, most of the older mentors are outside discussing the game or getting to meet other mentors from other teams. Some can also be found inside the area dancing too :P

We do our best to make it a safe and enjoyable environment for all and the hotel staff usually do a great job in assisting with the effort. We may be doing it at the Omni again this year, but we are looking around just in case we find something else a little cheaper. Our team will let you know when we finalize the project.

There is no way I'm going because last year's DJ was horrible.

For Nawaid Ladak, the Disc Jockey was horrible due to the fact that he played songs that should not have been played, he did not mix one song into another, he just immediately crossfaded into another song, and last but not least, his music archive was pratically 1 gb.

Respectfully,

I thought the 2008 DJ was much better myself. I asked last year's if he had Daft Punk and he said "no, man, mostly Top 40 stuff, sorry." Then they played One More Time. :/

The crossfading could have been handled better too, but it wasn't really a deal breaker for me. The lack of variety and mediocre time I was having with my friends made me enjoy it less than 2008. Though the guys from Aces High were cool!

These are the type of responses that can help make the event better. I do agree taht 2008's DJ was better; but hopefully 2010's DJ will be the best

I don't know what 816's current Championship Situation is, but I know for one I'll try to go to the Robo-Prom if I'm there.

I was supposed to go last year and got sidetracked with some other team functions... (Read as, got too involved in the competition to remember how to have fun... :P)

Half the reason I want to get to Atlanta again this year is to attend this! My team didn't know about it until afterward, and we were really disappointed.

So if 1334 qualifies this year, you'll see me and a few other Red Devils there for sure!

Hey everyone, I don't believe Team 20 has ever attended roboprom, but I talked to our head mentor and she was onboard with allowing people to go this year. =D

Quick question, do more people dress up in typical dance clothes (cocktail dresses/nice shirt and slacks) or do more wear funky FIRST inspired costumes?

I've seen a pretty wide variety from dresses and shirts to trackballs and orbit balls to just team uniforms. It's much less serious in my mind than any real prom (A very good thing!), just a good time.

Hey Kristen, last year most people wore like typical dance clothes but as expected there were some FIRST costumes around. You guys should definitely show up :P

On another note...It sounds like you're expecting to pull in about $12,000, maybe you should get an AWESOME DJ this year, last year's DJ wasn't that good.

expect the guys from 78 to show up

The attire for the prom is usually semi-formal. Girls wear dresses and the boys wear black pants and collared shirts.

It certainly isn't as formal as normal prom, but people really don't tend to wear jeans.

But there is NO dress code so feel free to come in a home-made tape dress or a soccer-ball suit :)

I've seen it worn dozens of times. I think you're good.

I'll probably just wear khakis and maybe a button shirt. Not too different from what I normally wear, and it fits in a suitcase alright. If I go, which is dependent on a few factors.

Re: RoboProm 2010

Really any attire goes.

I know that the other 3 girls and I setting this up will be in dresses :] and this is our prom since our school's prom is that Saturday, but the goal is just for everyone to get together and have a good time so as long as you are comfortable in what you are wearing and your attire is appropriate then everything will be good.

I hope to see everyone there and we will do our best to make this the best roboprom since we started this shindig 4 years.

Think basically a prom. You can talk bots too, which you could never do at a real prom. There are never enough slow songs...

Speak for yourself. I will make sure that my prom date for next year is willing to talk about robots, because quite frankly, I'm not a dance person, and would much rather sit at a table and talk about bots :P

At roboprom people dance and mingle. There are also tables set up for the non-dancing type. :)

We announce a king and queen of the prom too, depending on originality in costume, dance, etc. People who stand out basically.

We could possibly do some other activities too, like limbo? If you have any suggestions, please share. :)

As Lindsay has mentioned, we have been working hard on getting a place for the event. Unfortunately the Omni was booked up by the start of the build season and we have been looking to negotiate prices with other locations. However, we should hear something this week from the venues that we have contacted. I can tell you that we are making an attempt to keep RoboProm fairly close to the Georgia Dome (i.e. no more than a mile away).

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact either through a PM to me, Lindsay or email: team399@gmail.com

Hey everyone,

We finally have all the details worked out for RoboProm this year!

It will be held at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in a room called The Freight Room on Thursday, April 15th. The is only a two-minute walk from the Marta station. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $15 presale, $20 at the door. Punch and water will definitely be served and we're in the process of checking out cookies.

If you're interested in having the time of your life, you can drop by our pit on Thursday and pay in order to get the presale price. We are accepting cash and checks (please make your checks payable to Lancaster High School).

Although we are not strictly enforcing a dress code, we ask teams to wear appropriate clothing to the event. Dresses, suits, jeans, team shirts, giant lion costumes, and soccer ball outfits are all examples of acceptable attire. Basically, we understand that many teams won't know to bring formal clothing, so don't sweat what you're wearing. We'll even pick a king and queen chosen purely by random, good impressions that you make on our team members.

This is the fourth year we are hosting this event and we're extremely excited for the turnout. Spread the word to other teams going to Atlanta too! We want everyone to partake in the fun!

Love your future dancing partners,

Team 399

Re: RoboProm 2010

The address is

65 Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive, Atlanta, GA 30334

We're sorry for the delay in choosing a place, I know for some of you to go to it you needed to know details a week ago. This place can hold 1500 people and we're hoping to fill it up, the dance floor should be larger than last year, and the room slightly bigger. Enjoy ;)

Glad there's a venue picked out. It's about a mile walk from my hotel, and the train is somewhat out of the way, so my participation is probably dependent on if my friends prod me into being an "adult" (haha, good one) "chaperone". Possibly seeing you guys there!

John! How could you not account for this! RoboProm has been on a Thursday since the beginning! We couldn't possibly host it on a crucial scouting night, dummy... ha :P Donate your costume to our team.

Last year we had it at the Omni, and this location is less than a mile from the Georgia Dome and is only a two minute walk if a team takes the Marta. Hope your team can come because the two minute walk will be worth it! :)

Just checked it out via Google Maps and the location looks pretty good. I'll probably just walk there since it's only .7 miles from my hotel. :D

I've been trying to go for two or three years, but some team thing always came up. Now that I'm this Mentor/Teacher/Coach/Adult thing, I can finally go and do things on my own, though I'll probably bring my roommate.

Are you going to be at the Championship this year?

I'm not sure yet, I hope I can make it, school might get in the way though. =(

Sounds like a good time. I am down with a little robo-dancing. not to be confused with dirty-dancing of course....

I will try to drag a few of my team members down with it.

OK, El Capitan, since I guess you won't be dancing in the Player's Station, maybe I will shell out the money to come watch you dance at the Prom! :D

The students on the team tell me that the response has been great. If the mentors, advisors, or parents have questions feel free to message me.

341 will definitely be there. About 35 students. They had a blast last year.
Thanks for organizing this.

We are not sure 1676 is coming. A handful of us would love to come, but we have not run the idea of going by our coaches. We are planning on running it by them sooner than later.

Hey everyone, I have a quick question.

Our team would love to come, but we were curious about the average age of the attending students. I know this is a 'prom' so is it more geared to junior and senior students or do many freshman and sophomores attend as well?

I went last year as a sophomore and had a blast. Many of my friends were freshmen at the time and loved it. They really do make all grades included.

True that. I didn't feel out of place at all as a freshman last year. Even some of the mentors like to get jiggy with it at roboprom... :yikes:

High schoolers of all ages go.

It's like all of the good of real proms, without the stupid >$30 tickets, months of preparation, drama, weird age restrictions, or any of that dumb stuff.

$30? Try more like 80  I don't get why they make proms so expensive

Quick Question for someone on 399:

Will we be able to go to your pit and buy tickets on Thursday like in previous years?

Dustin,

I just verified with the advisor of our team and we will have that available. We will probably have a team of students go around and promote this in the pit area. Last year my wife was accepting ticket purchases and I am pretty sure she will be doing so again :P

You can always just wear a black skirt with your team shirt (your team shirts are black, right?) and call it done :P

(note: No Atlanta for me this year, so no Roboprom ]: Hopefully I'll be able to join you next year!)

Re: RoboProm 2010

Okay, so I know there's no dress code (and I'm sorry if this has been brought up already, but this thread is rather long and I'd rather not read the whole thing...again) but I've got two dresses and one I'd really love to wear...but it's Really formal. And I'm okay with that, but it might be a little weird if I'm the only one in this formal formal dress and most people aren't dressed up. So is there a limit on formalness of attire and are people going to be really dressing up?

Team 1114 from ontario will be there!!! Can't wait! Is a skirt okay?

Re: RoboProm 2010

I went last year. It really varied: from pit garb to nice dresses to prom-ly dresses. I can't recall any floor-length ball gowns though, if thats what you have planned. There were more prom-y dresses though (my friend wore the same floor-length dress she wore to prom).
