Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
We are working on our human player competition ut this year is a little different if anyone has ideas for a good human player competition let us know.
|
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
I'm willing to hold a NEMO (Non-Engineering Mentor Organization) meeting or workshop on a particular topic, if there is enough interest. Please let your mentors know and post here what non-technical topics would be of interest to your team.
Popular subjects we've covered in the past include: Fundraising Teambuilding Team Organization Team Communications |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
I think some variation on the egg-in-spoon relay carry could work for human players and their tridents. Maybe not rolling down the ramp, but some other precarious positioning is possible.

Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
We have to update our web site but, we are half full atm and filling up.
I think our lunch time competition will be less of a human player event and more of a human player/robot shooting event. I will put the details down when we formalize them. |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Maybe you can do what WPI did in 2008 with alliance human player competition. I don't know how many teams you have, but if you have 24 wait until after teams pick alliances to do the competition. Have all 12 balls either in the goal or behind the driver's wall and time each alliance of 3 teams in who can get all the balls on the field the quickest.

Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
The Gaelhawks can't wait to try for a 3-peat at WIWI!!!! :D
This has been a really fun event for our team both of the last 2 years... and it is a great opportunity to get some of your newer members out there on the field for a little hands on training. Hope to see you there! |

We have found that we can only run one 'mini competition' during the lunch hour. After disucssions, we really do not need to have a 'human player' competition. So we are working out the details of a robot shoot off. The human player will set up the balls on the field and the robot with have to score with them. Those balls will have to be re-feed onto the field so they can be scored again. |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
So I wanted to share with everyone how the Mentor Team works. It was a great success last season.
One robot will be in the competition (this year I believe this will be the back up robot from the Gaelhawks!! WPI regional champ and CT regional finalist!) This robot will be mantained by a pit crew and it will have the same number of matches as every team. Mentors will be able to sign up to be on the drive team for that robot when it goes on the field. The sign ups are match by match so that mentors can go against their teams robot or work alongside there team if they want. Last year we had a lot of fun with this. Sadly  the mentor robot did not make it into the elimination rounds. |

Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Maybe the human player competition doesn't necessarily have to do with the game. Humans as robots? Normal soccer on a breakaway field (so long as people don't kill themselves on the bump)? Most pull ups on the bar? There's some good possibilities for fun games here.

Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
It looks like it will be fun this year! I've enjoyed the past two years, and I'd love to come back for this year, but I'll be out of the country this summer and will have left by that point. Enjoy!

Team 1784 the Litchbots are registerred
That makes 22 teams. 3 more and we are at capacity. If you are thinking of coming now is the time to sign up. |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
23. Aluminum Falcons 2168
24. Apple Pi 2067 Because of the Mentor Team we would like 25 teams for our event (Sorry Mentor team, our plan is to NOT have the torMentors in the elimination round) So THIS MEANS WE HAVE ONE SPOT AVAILABLE and then we start a wait list. |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Team 195 wants to be there, but we dont think we have enough team members interested or free on that day..... who knows? maybe something will change and we'll show up!!!!!
|
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
We always like to have veteran teams here. It seems the more we have the smoother things go. Team 195 would be a welcome addition but we only have room for 1 more team (unless someone cancels).
|
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational

Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
This has already been sent to each team via email but to post I figured I would post it here also just in case people did not see the email.
There will be no major changes to the game. We feel that because there are some pre rookie teams we did not want to make any major changes. All of the changes we have made are due to the equipment we will have to work with instead of a desire to change the game. The changes that we have made are as follows 1. Because the DOGMA system will not be useable during the competition all balls will be scored when they pass through the box on the ball return. No balls will be counted from the goal. 2. Teams will have 10 seconds from the end of the match to get any balls in their goal onto the ball return. 3. A 2 point penalty will be giving to a team that is not actively trying to get a ball back on the field. 4. No Red Cards will be issued. |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
This year’s human player event is very unique. The rules of this game are the same rules as a regular Breakaway game. The only difference is that the human players will be crab walking. The game will be played as a normal game. The first 15 seconds, autonomous mode, will be played with blind folds, and after that time, the blind folds will be removed. The game will then proceed to continue as normal, while still crab walking. Players will have to score by kicking the ball into the goals. There will be designated people to return the soccer balls to the field when they are scored. These people will have no team affiliation to the current players.

We have a nice line up of teams but we could fit one more team if there is some team out there still wanting to come.
Also if anyone was free and wanted to volunteer we could still find a place for you. Everything is going well I am just saying if you want to be involved we can still accomodate |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
We will most definitely be there!!! GOOD LUCK TEAMS!!!!

Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Congrats to the finalists 230, 175, and 2064 and the winning alliance 558, 2836, and 9173 (Pre-rookie from Kennedy? with 230's backup robot).
Congrats to Team 1071 for pushing through the comms issues and running a great event. I think by the eliminations we had most of the robots up and running in almost every match. It was definitely fun getting my first chance to ref, so thanks for the opportunity! Here were the alliances after alliance selection: 230, 175, 2064 558, 2836, 9173 173, 181, 1740 9228 (GoodwinTech Pre-rookie), 178, 2168 1099, 1071, 176 571, 195 3125 228, 716, 237 |
Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Thanks to 1071 for another great event, despite some technical difficulties, and to 228 for some great food (I think that an egg and pulled pork sandwich would sell well for breakfast next year LOL!) Congrats to 230, 175 and 2064 for some of the best-played finals matches I've seen all year, and thanks to team Beta and the pre-rookies from Kennedy High School in Waterbury for being such great alliance partners. Beta, you did all we asked of you and more, and Kennedy, you guys sure as heck didn't drive like rookies!! We look forward to seeing and working with you both again at future FIRST events!

Team Beta had a great time in Wolcott! Though we would have liked to finish all of the qualification rounds, we understand the need to keep on time, and that field/communication issues happen from time to time. We had lined up rotating sets of drivers for each qualifying match to get everyone some stick time. Despite the time setbacks, heat and humidity, we couldn't be happier about the outcome. Thanks to 558 for picking us and putting on a show of offensive power, and to 9173 for rounding out the alliance with awesome defense. Denise, it was great working with you guys, and we're certainly looking forward to playing with you in the future! And thanks to 230, 175, and 2064 for an exciting set of matches. I didn't think we'd be able to pull it off after you guys beat us the first time in the round robin. 2836's autonomous is coded only for the midfield- to kick 2 balls firing only when our IR sensors detect a ball in kicking range. Luck was with us in the finals- being in the near zone, we scored our one ball from the farthest starting corner, and a close miss from 558 in the middle zone bounced out on the chains, right into our IR sensors where we kicked it back in for another goal. Truly an awesome set of matches. Big Thanks to 1071 and all the volunteers that made Where is Wolcott possible. The trophies are really cool looking! And thanks to 228 for the great food! I didn't get a chance to sample the pulled pork before it was sold out, but the beef brisket was certainly delicious! I've already uploaded some photos to Flickr- http://www.flickr.com/photos/betamar...7624212340888/ Can't wait for next year! -Marc Team Beta, 2836 |

Thanks MAX for a great event. All of the TorMentors had a blast. It was great that the pre-rookie Waterbury team was able to take home the banner with our robot.

Re: 2010 Where is Wolcott Invitational
I can't speak on behalf of the rest of the team, but as for my self I know even though I am wiped, I had an awesome time with my first WIWI competition as a member of 1071.
I just quickly want to thank all the teams for being so understanding when ever I came around to fix those bridges, or when I had to help Mr.Dependable with the start-up procedure on the field. Some Specific teams I want to thank 9228 - Guys thanks for being so patient with the cRIO re-imaging to get you guys set to your proper team number. Once that was going you did really well and I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming Rookie Year. 2064 - It was a difference in Lowercase vs. Capital that kept you off, but it got fixed. Thanks for the understanding as I was going through your router settings. I'm sure I already told you this, but thanks to Mr.Cormier (our head mentor) for getting this all together. I had a blast from the Initial set-up to the final Cake and Soda. I can't wait to do it again next year. Finally, I enjoyed meeting everyone I crossed paths with at the event and I'm looking forward to seeing alot of you at upcoming events! |

Aside from the field issues and random team communication issues I think WIWI was once again a great event. I would've liked to have kept my promise on a smoother running but like any off-season with new technology we had to relearn how to walk and then ran with it in the end =D. A late Congrats to all the Teams that came out for the day and had some fun, and those who were able to take home a little hardware (awards). Thanks to Rob and the rest of T1071 for having me help run the event. I look forward to next year [hopefully if FIRST stays on track with the technology and not make any suddle changes] and will re-make the promise of having a smoother event. Sorry I couldn't assist with tear down, maybe next year I'll be able to stick around. Once again - Thanks and Congrads to all! Mr. Dependable AT YOUR SERVICE! *Salutes* |
