My Guess, The rubber bands are for an anti back-drive mechanism.

Re: pic: 1678 Teaser #1

You are missing one of the gears, so you obviously don't plan on using the shifting half. But why do that is the question...

EDIT: I just noticed that the other gear has been switched to something else as well. I'm going to go with Adam Bochek, an anti back-drive mechanism. Which would be great for hanging... :D

I'm guessing you're using the dog gears from the super shifters for a ratcheting kicker mechanism? That doesn't look like something I'd want to sit in front of for too long.

I just have to say that I really love gears, and super shifters have a lot of gears. It looks awesome.

The McMaster ones run a little pricey. We bought 3 sets of the 3" ratchets and pawls for each. Its about 50 per ratchet and 40 or so per pawl.

Bottom of this page.

And the ratchets happen to be 3/8" thick, which works out petty well :)

Ding ding ding! And David is the winner!

So, I am guessing you using these for a hanging winch or some sort. But why two? I have absolutely no idea.

Thankfully, they sell a lot of winches that has ratchets built into it, so we don't need to use ratchets and pawls in our gearbox.

I was rolling my eyes over the idea of spending that much for a ratchet and pawl system that most likely took more work to implement.

And i know its been done, we've done it :p

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/28596

its right on the end of that cable winch

Now why didn't I see this a week ago? Haha oh well, can't get it right all the time, at least it works right?

Re: pic: 1678 Teaser #1

i'm just being cheap, you guys got a slick implementation going.
Im still wondering why you need two though....main guess is kicker and winch using the same winch construction

Guess what I found at Sears on Sunday:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00942636000P

This guy is going on our robot this year (at least, I hope so).

Now now, no need to rub it in Ken... :p

And we'd need two 3/8" wrenches, just incase you're feeling generous ;)

Re: pic: 1678 Teaser #1

Looks like a winch gearbox for kicker. The ratchet and paw are a nice touch. I used one on our leadscrew lifting arm to stop it from back driving as well.

Overdrive is using a very similar setup. Be careful with the stock shifting block and shaft they tend to destory themselves or explode. :D

I'll keep an eye on it. We have been kicking for a few weeks with no problems, and we have to use a 2" bore cylinder to pull the dog out :ahh:
