Modify Wheels?

Are we able to modify the wheels at all? our idea involves xcrewing something into the rubber part of the wheel, and we're just checking to make sure its still allowed

i am not positive because i am in school and dont have my rule binder, but if you are going to put stuff in the wheels you have to check the safety rules. If what you are putting in can damage the field or other robots it would be out, but i would read the rules very carefully to see if this is allowed.

Re: Modify Wheels?

You are allowed to use any wheel you want to, or to modify any wheel to fit your needs. As long as you do not damage the floor or have metal in contact with the floor.

Quote:

<R08> ROBOT wheels, tracks, and other parts intended to provide traction on the FIELD may be purchased or fabricated (“traction devices” include all parts of the ROBOT that are designed to transmit any propulsive and/or braking forces between the ROBOT and the FIELD). In no case will traction devices that damage the carpet or other playing surfaces be permitted. Traction devices shall not have surface features such as metal, sandpaper, hard plastic studs, cleats, or other attachments. Anchors (i.e. devices that are deployed/used to keep one’s ROBOT in one place and prevent if from being moved by another ROBOT) shall not use metal in contact with the carpet to “stay put.” Gaining traction by using adhesives or Velcro-like fastener material is not allowed.

Click on the above link and go to Rule <R08>

If that doesn't answer your question, ask your designated team Q&A person to post a question to this forum:

Re: Modify Wheels?

sorry to hijack this thread (just a little):) We're a rookie team and wanted to know if we were restricted to using the 8" standard wheels or could we use 4"/6" wheels with traction tread from Andymark? We are thinking that lowering the height by 4" would allow us to get through the tunnel easier plus would lower our C.G; but, may pose a problem getting "over the hump". Has anyone else tried this or considered it?

Thanks!

Re: Modify Wheels?

You can definitely use those 4 or 6 inch wheels.

Just remember that your bumpers must still be in the bumper zone (10-16" from the floor) in the NORMAL CONFIGURATION
