Kit Router for Internet Access?
 

Hey guys,

Has anyone ever tried using the kit router to not only network together the cRIO, classmate, etc. as WELL as provide an internet connection? My team has only ever used it for LAN applications, but it would be nice to get an uplink from the same piece of hardware...

Unless you plug in a 2nd wireless reciever, you can't simultaniously connect to the cRIO and the internet. The classmate does have built in wireless though and you can get a wireless card for laptops fairly cheap these days

What works for us is to plug a general internet connection into the WAN port on the router. This allows computers that are on the FRC router to see the internet and the robot at the same time. The router routes the 10.<TEAM NUMBER>.X traffic to the FRC components and all other traffic upstream to the net at large.

The driver station laptop is a special case, since it needs to (wants to?) live at a static IP address. Since it has a static IP, it has not picked up a DNS server from the router's DHCP.

To add DNS to the drivers station (so it can look things up when it is in developer mode) we put in the Google DNS server addresses into the Driver Station TCP/IP properties. Google is currently providing free DNS services that can be used as an alternative. If you are interested in checking them out, more info can be found at the Google Public DNS site:
