[BB]Changes to Robot Ship

http://frcdirector.blogspot.com/

Relief for the Mid-Atlantic teams, and the latest batch of control system updates. (Rules update should reflect this when it comes out.)

...wow. 65 pounds. That's most of the robot. Like, I think I'm going to push for witholding everything but the bumper frame and hanger now.

Thanks Bill for a clear explanation of why there is no extension and an alternate, creative solution.

We weighed in at 95.5 pounds today. Might be shipping a frame :)

Re: [BB]Changes to Robot Ship

Usually we try to plan for the fact that we will miss some days due to snow. We have never missed less than two, and never more than 8. We haven't hit 8 yet this season, but with today gone, we might get there. This is a skillful compromise. The big problem this year is missing the entire fourth weekend, then half of the week following, and now likely a good chunk of the last week. Days lost late in the build season generally mean more lost work and less time to reschedule and make up for the losses.

This may sound like sour grapes, but......we are a first week regional. We ONLY get 8 more days to work, while last week teams get another 6 weeks. Is that fair?

I think what makes it "fair" (or at least reasonable) is that each teams has the same maximum withholding: 65 pounds.
Surely the question of fairness would arise if only those teams who have been snowed in got to keep weight back, or if the amount changed depending on some arbitrary decision.

But you are competing against teams with the same amount of build time and the 6 week teams are competing against other 6 week regional teams. Sounds fair to me.

Every team is allowed equal opportunity to enter and compete; that is fair, and that's really where FIRSTs' efforts to make things fair should end.

There is another thread with this same theme. I posted there and I will post here also..

You are right. I am done with the craziness of robotics in a short amount of time, and some others will continue for another 6 weeks. Who is getting the better end of the deal.

But...there doesn't seem like everything is "fair", with teams going on to second regionals, and teams winning there way into Atlanta, can they withhold 65 pounds off there bot after the regional win and then work on that before Atlanta? I am just asking.

We won't know officially until update 11 comes out.

Everything isn't fair, never has been, never will be.

Great lesson to teach the kids.

Indeed they can. Every team has roughly equal opportunity to sign up for second regionals and pre register for Championships. Beyond that, if you want more time with said allowance, use this as motivation to fundraise for multiple events!

this is a good update to hear because I know my team has lost a weekend and several other days due to bad weather and we are expected to get more -_- so its nice that we might not be in as big of an ordeal

I'm liking Bills Blog today! :D

But thank you for explaining why ship date cannot be pushed back for teams, very insightful.

Is a whole robot a "fabricated item," so to speak?

As we say "Life isn't fair, the fair comes in July". Normally I get blank stares from the roboteers and snickers from the Mentors.

It is sour grapes.
Life isn't fair. FIRST isn't fair. Now get over it. ;)

Seriously though, welcome to the real world. It's wasted energy to complain about what you cannot control. Concentrate on what you can control and look for ways to give yourself and your team an advantage.
