Digging the ediT.

Also, that hanging mechanism is Awesome.

pretty sweet, but the hanging mechanism is epic! thats pretty much what i had in mind to do for hanging

Epic hanging arm.

Simple and effective. I love it. Just... love it.
I won't lie, your design is making me question aspects of my own!

I'm calling a "Driving Tomorrow's Technology" award at the Championship for the hanging mechanism...

That hanging is schweet and I love the vacuum ball control. Didn't expect to see that on top notch robots.

I'm really looking forward to seeing it in action at BAE! :)

Beuatifully simple. Nice job.

Great job, looks awesome. How well is your battery handling all that power from the vacuum?

Once again, the gang from Rhode Island has blown me away with a simple and elegant design. This robot looks like it's going be a huge star on the breakaway field. Very impressive.

The battery holds up fine. We can "dribble" and shoot for five minutes without noticing any performance drop.

See everyone at the GSR and the Championship!

We learned quite a bit about radial impellers/blowers in the last week or so. If you get an impeller that is properly sized and tuned for the RPM you run it at it can be pretty nice on power consumption.

Our initial prototype drew over 40 amps from the FP running it direct...a few impellers later it draws 7 amps without a ball in possesion and 3.5 amps with a ball in possesion (running off of 1 FP motor). I think that is on par with most rotary ball posession devices.

We still have a TON to get done before our practice with the folks up in Quincy on Saturday. Hopefully we can pull off a fully functional machine by then!

Good luck everyone!

Rob

It's official. I just had my first "Wow! That's so cool! I wish I thought of that!" for 2010. Congrats, AIR Strike, on building the coolest hanging mechanism ever.

Awesome solution for elevating, but then again would you expect anything less out of the RI crew? I wanted so badly to find a way to do something on the vert(s), but we just didn't get that figured out. Small and effective machine. Can't wait to see video of this puppy in action.

Looking really good guys I can't wait to see her in action. I wish I could go to to NH this year and see you compete.

It's been a real challenge so far this year packaging everything into a small footprint. The hanger in this video needs a lot of tweaking before it can fit! Our white board of "things-to-do" is a mile long, so this last week is going to be busy...

Re: Team 78 AIR Strike Official Teaser. Climbing Included!

Simplicity at its best.

The idea for your hanging system is ingenious along with the fact that your vacuum posssessing system works very efficiently (according to the claims of your performance for 5 minutes).

I also love your kicking mech; nice little hammer :p

See you in GSR.

Cool lifter, I was hoping to see one like that pop up somewhere! If your driver is good enough at lining it up you could have one of the fastest hanging robots out there.

In my humble opinion, 78's real strength has always been their drive crew. Even if a fork truck landed on their crate and they fielded a box-on-wheels-8-hour-miracle they'd find their way into the finals. :ahh:

In 2008 our robot ended up a lot like yours somewhat inspired by your early disclosure on week three. It's cool to see that this time we decided on a very similar mechanism for hanging with no inside knowledge! :D

How easy do you expect it to be to line up your hanger with the bar?

It looks pretty sweet. Should be another good bot (as usual)

I had the same question too. Do you guys plan to do some sort of turn onto the bar and hook your mechanism on?

Other than that, it looks like an awesome machine. I really love the way is sits suspended, it looks almost like it's levitating.

Re: Team 78 AIR Strike Official Teaser. Climbing Included!

There is a gap between the drive and idler wheels. Our drivers are pretty adept at getting the pole in between the wheels. Drive forward a few inches and the rear (idler) wheel and front (drive) wheel both engage the pole. Hit the button and watch it drive up. :)

Check out this episode of American Robot, we demonstrate the concept of hooking onto the bar at around 3:45. It's slightly more difficult with the actual arm because the distance between the idler and drive wheel was reduced when we decided on a pneumatic wheel.

Awesome video, I've seen a few teams using the same suction cup as your team for their vacuum ball control method, where did you find those?

So the birth of team 78 has begun with a great looking robot.

Why did 121 form 78 ?

When you swing out the arm to hang, how does it lock without bending ?

Thanks for the compliment.

We are a brand new team, but with enough veteran mentors that we are not considered a rookie team under FIRST rules. Our organization works with 16 different schools in our community and has five (3 FLL, 1 FTC, 1 FRC) teams.

Here is a good pic of hanging: http://www.joemenassa.com/images/rob...816_large.html

For our entire build season in pictures see: http://www.joemenassa.com/robotics2010.html

I wanna thank the 78 crew of mentors and students for a great week 6. I unfortunately was not able to be there the 5 weeks prior. I just wanna say thank you. Thank you all for makeing this old veteran feel proud to be apart of your team. See you all at BAE

Re: Team 78 AIR Strike Official Teaser. Climbing Included!

Did you folks try different distances between the idler and the drive wheel?
I am assuming that its better to make them closer together in order to wedge it in better for added friction, hence, the tradeoff being harder for the driver to set it in place on the tower pole.

If so, was it harder to climb the pole with a greater distance apart? From the pics, I cant calculate if there is added torque or not.

Definition of "coopertition":
Being impressed and thrilled with seeing how well your robot drives, kicks, handles the ball, and especially hangs; and at the same time being a bit frightened and worried about facing your robot someday in competition.
Great, great job!

Great job guys! As always an amazing machine from an amazing group of people. The video work as been great all season. As in previous years, I was always excited for the next American Robot episode. I wish I was going to be at BAE next weekend to see you guys in action. Guess I'm going to have to wait till ATL. Can't wait to see the machine, and all of you!
