CubeStormer - Mindstorm Rubik's solver

A robot built only from Lego Mindstorm parts solves standard rubik's cube in under 12 seconds. YouTube link

The precision of the machine combined with the speed is extremely impressive. I've always wanted to build one out of Vex to work in, say, 20 minutes. 10 seconds for that kind of thing is ridiculous! With precise turns and no apparent play or slipping!

I'm wondering if the solving algorithm is particularly interesting. I'm assuming it is a simple brute force solution running on a PC, but I would think such a solution would take more than half a second to derive. Perhaps as each side is scanned an algorithm is used?
