Re: Robot Names

Team 2108 (Team Awkward Turtle) created a tradition our first year of naming our robots "Zippy" since we used so many zip-ties on the first robot (that's another story in itself...)

2007: Zippy T. Turtle
2008: Zippy T. 2
2009: Zippy 3 (Z3)
2010: Zippy 4 ("Zed 4")

The last two years, we have dropped the "T." part, and also created a nickname by which the team refers to the robot. This year, it was decided that since I am the captain and am English, and since the English pronounce the letter Z "zed", that we would refer to Zippy 4 as "Zed 4" :)

Re: Robot Names

2010: Dr. Robotnik
2009: Trogdor
2008: Schnell Bahn (We chose it because we thought it sounded kind of cool, then we saw the game. What a coincidence!)
2007: Ursa (Our school mascot is a bear)

Re: Robot Names

This year our teams theme is Top Gun. So every person on the team has a call sign that goes on our flight suits. It only makes sense for the robots name to be Ghost Rider because that is the name of the plane in the movie.

Re: Robot Names

I'm pushing for "Power of H" or "Pinball Wizard", but nothing decided by the team yet. I guess there's a Big Bang Theory character tradition that would be broken, though.

At skunkworks we have ( in the last 3 years) tried to tie in the skunk to our name

08 Das UberStinkTier (Super Skunk in German ...in honor of our German Exchange student Christoph!!) by the way .. none of the announcers could pronounce it correctly....

09 The Stench
10 Pele' le Pew

Re: Robot Names

One word of warning I have to other teams: if you're making up a name for your robot, make sure you look it up to make sure it's appropriate. 10 pages of definitions on urbandictionary.com made our team realize that we needed a new name for our robot.

This year, we're planning to name the robot after our head mentor if it's really good. Otherwise, we're going to name it after one of our clumsy seniors (who enthusiastically volunteered herself).

Just wondering, but do any other teams name the components of the robot? This year our kicker is the Frying Pan (even though it looks nothing like a frying pan) and our pull up mechanism is the Off-Bot-Pro.

We are using a spinner to "kick" the balls. Originally this was affectionately dubbed the "turtle flipper" but has since been renamed "the spinner of death" as we, when testing it at full strength (and not in its proper configuration) hit the ball in such a way that we almost hit one of the students in the head (he has good reflexes) and dislodged a ceiling tile.
I am not aware of any other named components on the robot, as of yet.

Our previous robot names:

Team 639's robot is named The Commander this year. We voted on a large number of ideas and narrowed them down to that.

'09 bot was Fred (Frickin' Ridiculous Electronic Device)

This year we're proud to present Grace (Genuine Robotic Athlete, Communicating Epicness) and we're quite excited about her.

Re: Robot Names

last year's robot was named after our programmer Enmar, and was christened "Romar Mod 6" because it was modified six times.

This year we are still arguing about whether or not the robot is male or female.
