Is it against the rules to mount them backwards?

Ex. flipping the side the motors go on the gearbox

it is just a basic chassis w/ motors and a chair bolted to it.

safe? no.

Numbers,
I was just joking. When you look at the picture is appers to be a kitbot chassis with the motors to the outside which in normal competition would make the robot base really wide. But upon closer examination, there is suddenly eight CIM motors which is also way too much. Everybody is getting crazy this close to ship. Have some fun!

Heh, alright. Rookie team, we've already had many people attempt to implement their ideas without reading the rules :o

Currently our motors are attached on the same side as the output sprocket for the gearbox.

Are you sure about that? The next question is "Are the maximum dimensions of your robot still under the 28" x 38" requirement"? A common rookie slip up is to make the robot exactly 28" x 38" only to find that their tolerance is +/- 1/4" and the 1/4" lies outside the dimension specification. The First tolerance is 28" x 38" +0.0000". This is the tolerance used by inspectors.
