This concerns me as well. Please read <R07-a> very carefully.

I need to take my own advice. I misread <R07-a> and the "blue box" underneath it.

This robot design does not violate <R07> bumper rules.

I would be sure the elevator base cannot be considered a metal traction device under <R08>. If you think there would be any difficulty there, just put some polycarb strips on the bottom.

• it is no longer constrained by Rule <R07-A>, and
• it is expected and allowed that the BUMPERS will travel outside (typically above) the BUMPER ZONE, and
• if the ROBOT is "frozen" (i.e. all moving parts halted) and placed on a flat surface, the BUMPERS do not have to be within the BUMPER ZONE.
Note that these effects are only in force when the ROBOT is actually driving over the BUMP or RAMP and/or ELEVATED or SUSPENDED (or in the process of being ELEVATED or SUSPENDED) on the TOWER (i.e. the body of the ROBOT must not be in its normal flat-floor attitude and elevation). Simply touching the BUMP, RAMP, or TOWER is not a sufficient condition to avoid violating Rule <R07-A>.

I'm still not completely convinced after reading <R07a>, mainly because it satisfies BOTH parts of the rule. The robot is on a flat floor, and is in the process of elevating itself. Which trumps which?

Oh yeah, also covering the ends in polycarbonate or anything that's not metal is a good idea.

I would read the rule as: "If the robot is on a flat floor the bumpers must be in the bumper zone unless the robot is in the process of being elevated."

I do not think the spirit of the rule would prohibit this (awesome) design either.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread, but I wanted to update all the people here on how we did at the SBPLI regional. The design was legal, and we had the second most hanging points at SBPLI with 16. We also won the creativity award and made it into the elimination rounds.
