2010 Highest Scoring Match

I've been trying to find how high people can go with points this year. Most of the matches are less then 10 points, around 4 or so. Anyone seen an amazing match with a high score?

Also, post if there were any amazing matches in general.

So far the highest I can see is:

11 points - FLR Match 45

Alot of 9 pointers to go with that... But other than those few big ones.. The average has been really low.. a lot of zeros being put up..

Penalties are a big factor in many of the matches.

My initial reaction to the game rules was: "The year of the PENALTY!".

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

Team 25 in NJ posted 8 points today alone in a practice match. I could see them coupled with a few other bots reaching 15 or so

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

my teams last match today at GSR was an amazing 7 to 7 (it actually ended up being 6 to 7)...
one of our aliance robots was disabled from the beginning of the match, so we fared pretty well.

we lost though, because the other aliance robot got a penalty for something...I can't really remember what it was though...

one of our another amazing matches was when someone switched the battery on our cart (wich has a few broken cells) with the battery on our robot (the cart battery is labled ("CART! NOT FOR ROBOT!" in big letters, so someone was really dumb)...
as soon as the match started, our bot was dipping to 7 volts with the slightest touch of the joysticks, and the CRIO kept going into that power save mode where everything stops...and not to mention that one of our aliance partners had flipped over...
the only bot on our aliance was playing strictly defense in the far zone the whole time to prevent scoring by the other alliance...
it was 1 on 3, and we would have WON 2 to 1, but someone got a penalty on our aliance, so we tied hahaha

I think peachtree takes the cake for highest scoring match so far. My team (1771) won match 46 at 9-4 with team 1002 and 1466. Total score: 13.

Edit: didn't see the post above me
Edit: the 4 points the other team had were also scored by us to give us a higher coopertition bonus

Lirki 05-03-2010 20:25

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

Since it's on the line of scoring whats the highest ya'll have seen penalty wise? One of the games at Peachtree got 22 because a ball fell into the field without going through the sensor(human player jammed it and it popped over the boarding).

That was one team btw. Don't add both together

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

I had the webcasts for Peachtree and DC going for most of the day. I didn't sit and watch every minute, and was away from my desk alot, but the highest score I saw was 9. ... and many many matches had zero/zero's.

The best penalties I saw was when 4 bots (2 red, 2 blue) were playing "king of the mountain" on both sides of a bump/tower. On both sides of the tower there was a red-blue opposing pair, face-to-face. ... each almost climbing the bump, and each almost toppleing the other. It went back and forth a few times on both sides, then the one blue flips it's red, then the other red flips its blue, and they both got penalties for intentional flipping.

Many many occurances of gobbling a ball within the 3 inch rule ... heck, most of these violations had the 'bots completely swallowing the balls under their high wheel-bases.

... and at those 2 regionals, I saw 2 very dependable tower-climbers, a few that were close, and zero SUSPENDED 'bots.

I'm surprised to hear that. The rules seemed pretty clear that if you were on a bump it was no man's land and you should expect contact outside the bumper zone.

Well, until 8:55, we had a tie for highest-scoring match: 11-3.
We may have the highest score, as of seeding-points: 17, in the same match as above. :D

In DC, there are being VERY strict about rough play. On several occasions today, we saw teams barely touch another robot, but because they were sideways and had high traction wheels, and their CG is high, they tip over with hardly any force. We accidently tipped a bot, 1024, and several others did too. Yellow card was the result. Also a team just sat on side of the bump, not moving, and because another team tried to get on the bump to do a hanging maneuver, they tipped over when they ran into the other robot - EVEN though it was stationary. That stationary robot got a Yellow card.

The penalties are way out of control and decided way too many matches.

Also your control board better be ready to go as soon as you get up there. We "crashed" our Classmate and had to reboot, but because they were behind time-wise, they wouldn't wait and we had to play a dead match. While another team forgot to charge their Classmate and were allowed to put in a spare battery, which took a lot longer. Just kinda stinks...

Week 1 - gotta love it!!

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

It seems like penalties are a major part of this year's game, and that's unfortunate to hear. These games have be moving towards a more non-contact competition which I'm not sure how much I like. Back in the day of no bumpers and penalties only resulted from intentionally trying to destroy another robot was the good ol' days.

I personally haven't been watching or keeping up with too much of the challenge this year. I'm curious if this low scoring average is going to be consistent throughout the season, or is this maybe more the result of being the beginning weeks. What do you guys think? Are points going to rise as the weeks move along? Or are they going to stay the same?

If you want to see a "good" non-contact game, check out this year's VEX game. It is very "volleyball" like and has resulted in some very interesting strategies.

My memory is somewhat foggy, but I do believe our alliance scored 11 points at least once or twice? Obviously not the record, but double digits is something to be proud of.

Wow seriously? in Traverse City we practically had battle bots. Teams were trying to tip or tipped over other bots every few rounds. Though of course teams got red card for hitting a opposing alliance tower or enemy robot in contact with it.

I wonder did any team ever right another robot after it tipped? Here our team was the only one that bothered to flip another alliance robot back on its wheels.

P.S. can you change the Rookie Year thing since I kind of messed up it is suppose to be 1996.

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

Well, GSR seemed to have some pretty impressive matches! I think that every alliance at GSR was composed of several truly competitive robots! From my scouting records, the total number of points scored in the elimination matches (including penalties) was 208 (in the 18 matches). This would put the average match sum at 11.6 points.

Brendan referenced the single highest scoring match in his post above - Quarterfinal 1-1 was truly incredible! The *penalized* score was 12-4, with the incredible finalist alliance of 1922, 78, and 134 putting up the big numbers!

I think the highest score of the sum of the alliances (with penalties) at GSR was from Final 1-4... the winning alliance of 1073, 1519, and 1058 managed an 11-6 win against 1922, 78, and 134.

I would like to express my gratitude toward our incredible alliance partners: 1073 and 1058. Somehow I feel like our teams' robots were made to work in the same alliance! If not for each of your specific contributions, I doubt our alliance would have had any success. Thanks again!

I'd also like to congratulate all three alliances you faced - you guys were amazing! Every single match had me on the edge of my seat, checking the score board, cheering at the limits of my voice, and praying non-stop! Thanks to the alliances of 562, 241, and 319 of 126, 40, and 2386 and of 1922, 78, and 134 - as I said, all of you were great!

I already can't wait to play some more Breakaway at NCR and the Championships!

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

At the Oregon Regional the highest legal score was a 9.. although in the second final match one alliance would have scored 12 points if not for a red card.... (touching other teams tower in last twenty seconds)... even though none of the robots in that match could hang.

Right, and that was with everyone playing full out (no shooting in the opponents goal) with both sides playing defense, and no hanging bots - all points were goals scored, so that's 15 balls scored in one match. Sweet!

BAE had one of the best final matches I can remember in years (since 2003 at least). 4 matches and some of the highest scores. I still can't believe that the top teams made it that far. Usually an underdog comes up and plays the number 1 seed and loses. You guys are awesome!:)

The highest combined score has to be Michigan State Championship finals match 1. It is 18 to 18 even with our robot flipped upside down for part of the match. Keep in mind that there were quite a bit of defensive play or the score would be even higher. The video can be downloaded from TBA.

Yeah, we were part of the 12 in that match. 55 seeding points to the victors. The 26 points though was due to 1918, 469, and 3302. 3302 did a great job cleaning up the home zone while 1918 scored from midfield, and 469 did its thing.

We were in that match with 33. I wish there was a video of it. Our alliance did a good job - our autonomous kept them out of the tunnel initially, and between the two of us we cleared nearly all the balls to our end. In fact, the score was close to even around the half way point if I remember correctly.

Then they got a couple balls cycling and it was over. They continued to score after the buzzer sounded and got another 4 or 5.

We probably could have won that match had we changed a couple things we did. Oh well, hopefully we get another chance in Atlanta :D

You're definitely missing some from that list.

ON Semi 1-1 1114 2056 1547 1305 2949 1404 15 11
WAT Q51 1114 2056 771 1075 2609 843 24 0 <-- Highest scoring match played on Canadian soil, played 6v0.
WAT Final 1-1 1114 2056 296 1305 1310 3190 16 8
WAT Semi 1-1 1114 2056 296 2702 843 781 17 5
WAT Qtr 1-2 1114 2056 296 2200 2625 1219 20 2

Notice a trend?

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

The first three matches of the LA finals probably belong in that list as well (in terms of total points scored).

LA Final 1-1 330 1717 1452 294 968 980 12 12 (tie, so TBA doesn't have the correct score)
LA Final 1-2 330 1717 1452 294 968 980 14 10
LA Final 1-3 330 1717 1452 294 968 980 8 10

Its not the high, but 1986, 71, and 2667 scored 18 in the semis at North Star. One of the highest "non-469" scores.

Looks like match # 100 on Curie got 29 points...32 before penalties.

469 888 111 vs. 1114 231 288

469 888 111 vs. 1114 231 288

Finally, 1114 has been "defeated"!

If 6v0 is defeated: final score: 29-0.
So yes, "defeated."

I'm still a little confused why they turned off their autonomous and scored for the other alliance. I know it has something to do with rankings, but I don't see why a loss should increase your rankings more than a win or a close match.

When 1114 does a 6 v 0, and loses, they only get the opponents/winners score, so any balls they score wouldn't benefit them. Plus the balls they would score for their alliance would only count double to their opponents qual rankings, and any balls they moved from the red home zone would be balls that they could have eaily scored afterward in teleop, and since the goal was to scor ein red, there is no point in moving the balls further from the red goal.

RMiller 16-04-2010 16:54

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

The seeding point system is:

Winner gets their penalized score + 2x opponent's unpenalized score + 5 points

Loser gets opponent's unpenalized score

In case of tie, teams get 3x their penalized score.

So, in this case, 29-0, with 3 penalties for red: red alliance got 34 seeding points and blue got 32 points.

RMiller 16-04-2010 16:58

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

To expand, if both alliances scored 16 points with no penalties, both teams would get more seeding points: 16x3=48. However, with a penalty, and 16-15 score, one alliance would get 15 points and the other 53 points. Working together, they can guarantee not losing lots of seeding points.

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

The biggest reasons to me are:
1114 instead of possibly losing ensured themselves of points that vaulted themselves to #1.
469 benefits by ensuring themselves to pair up with the best complimentary bot for eliminations.
1114 not scoring limits the coopertition points of the winners from gaining in the rankings.
What a sight to see!

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

I guess I find this a bit disappointing. Its a shame when the seeding system creates a situation where a team with a 57 match unbeaten streak decides it is in their best interest to lose, crushingly, on purpose. Congrats to 1114 though on an amazing season, I don't disagree with their rationale.

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

Look at it as 57 straight matches of making the right decisions instead of just 57 winning matches.

BrendanB 16-04-2010 20:16

Re: 2010 Highest Scoring Match

When 469 plays good teams like 217 for example, the score drastically drops from 15+ to 5 to 5 tie. Even if you don't get the extra 5 points for being the winning alliance, I would definitely take the 29 ranking points over the 5.

Don't get carried away though, 6v0 does not work every time you use it. I just wish I had been there to see them play that match.

Archimedes highest score is 20-8 in qualification 59 (25,330,1622 vs 527,1987,1629)!

It was the right decision and it was smart to do, but it does not mean that it wasn't disappointing. The ranking system this year is one of the biggest flawed ones I've ever seen. It also penalizes defense because defense make the scores lower, but in eliminations, ranking points don't matter so defense is important. Makes qualification matches and elimination matches completely different.

Seeing what 888 was doing, this looks more like a "4v2" where the blue alliance forced the issue on the red alliance by blocking their own goals.

It's the smart move for any alliance that knows they're going to lose the match.

Match 119 on Archimedes at 9:09.

Now that is how you play this game! 38 points-new high

Quarters 3 Match 1 16 343 1718 vs 1902 337 1868 - Red 25 Blue 13

The winning alliance had 9 dogma penalties or it would have been 34 to 13.

The great Car Nack is wise. No alliance score over 30 points has been seen, though it is difficult to tell whether he foresaw the DOGMA penalties contributing to that.

P.S. 45 spells their team name as Technokats.

Also, post if there were any amazing matches in general.

So far the highest I can see is:

11 points - FLR Match 45

I was very lucky this year and was able to watch the single highest one team score in a single match. The match consisted of (Red Alliance) Team 469, 888, and 111 against (Blue Alliance) Team 1114, 231, and 288. It happened at the Georgia Dome during the FIRST National Championship Competition in the Curie Division.

Match 100 ended with the Red Alliance winning 32-0. With penalties enforced (only dogma, because balls were being scored so fast, the Red Alliance won 29-0).

Many people consider this match a conspiracy because the Blue Alliance turned and scored their balls into the Red Alliance goals, boosting the opponents score as much as possible, and in return boosting their own seeding score as well. However, this is untrue and none of the Blue Alliance teams were approached by any Red Alliance or other teams to suggest this idea. It was all the idea of team 1114. For proof of this, you can follow this link: http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/team/288 and it will take you to my team's (Team 288, The Robodawgs) match results, it will be down at the bottom under Curie 2010.

It was an amazing match with all teams on both alliances meeting up after the match in the pit area and conversing and laughing about the match. Such great times at the National Competition!

IRI match 33
Blue: 107, 469, 910 - 38
Red: 135, 1902, 1730 - 0 (1 goal-1 penalty)

This wasn't a 6v0 match, but one or two of the red bots were broken down.

910 and 469 had another match together at Kettering Kickoff with another 38 points and 5 goals against.

After 3 competitions with 469 and no matches together, it was fantastic to work with them for such an amazing match in the offseason.

My one goal for this coming year is to go to IRI, whether it is with our team or not. From what I have heard, its pretty awesome!

38 to 2 at IRI with 469 and 910... also at Kettering Kickoff 469 910 with the triple backup driveteam matching the "first string" 38 to 3... and we missed a shot :yikes:
