Re: State Rankings...Lets do it ourselves.

You need to look at the most recent rules:
Quote:

5.2.1 Qualifying and Registering to Compete
64 teams will qualify for the State Championship. Six (6) teams from each district event will automatically win a spot at the State Championship:
 3 spots for the teams making up the winning alliance
 1 spot for the Chairman’s Award winner
 1 spot for the Rookie All Star Award winner
 1 spot for the Engineering Inspiration Award winner
The balance of the 64 State Championship spots will be filled by the top teams in ranked order based on their total points following the close of the district season.

Why can't you guys just hold your horses? The person who compiles the rankings has a day job. FiM is 100% volunteers, but even though they aren't getting paid, they are doing their best to insure that the posted results are accurate - that in the face of having to pour through the data just to come up with win/loss records and not being able to discern from the FIRST site who were the captain's first and second picks.

All you are doing here is to compound their problem with even more misinformation!

How does the tracking of approximate FiM stats in a CD thread (for fun) affect anyone else's job?

A better question is: How will it affect FiM if the volunteer decides to quit doing it?

If FiM's volunteer decided to quit doing a job that needs to be done to determine the fate of FRC teams around the state just because some guys on Chief Delphi wanted to see how well they were doing relative to other teams, I'd question the decision to have that volunteer doing anything that has any impact on anyone.

Re: State Rankings...Lets do it ourselves.

I love the FiM system and appreciate the fact that it runs on volunteer power. However, for planning/logistics purposes, anything that lets teams know where they stand r.e. qualifying for State or the Championship is helpful.

Its also fun to speculate & helpful to know who you can expect to see at State.

I believe that the cutoff for State last year was around 40 points. I expect that this year will be about the same.

Unfortunately, the info on the FIRST site doesn't go deep enough for us to generate statewide points/standings.

I would expect that the cutoff would be a little higher this year, because there are more teams with auto-bids to the championship, so less teams can go just on points alone.

True. But most the byes would have qualified on points anyway. So, the cutoff will be only slightly higher, if any at all.

Don't let your rank bother you as far as getting a chance to go to states. Last year they went pretty far down the list to fill it up. Some teams just won't have the money, have decided to spend it on atlanta or may choose to honor the holiday.

The cutoff will be around 48 like Clint said, to make sure you are in good posistion to go, but there will teams that get in that have around 44-42 points after people decline their spots for the event.

But just as no one up here in MI has seemed to ever have heard of it, we had never heard of Euchre! (robot in bag for tomorrow at Wayne state and big glass of wine makes me go off topic!):D

Euchre is reallyyyyy awesome, this makes me want to know how to play 42. Because if 42 is even close to as fun as euchre i may just learn how to play :) And by the way, good luck at Wayne State!

The initial cutoff will be 42. After clearing the declines, you will see a team at State with 38.

cyberjoek 18-03-2010 01:06

Re: State Rankings...Lets do it ourselves.

Through Week 2:
*23 teams have been auto-advanced to States, leaving 41 slots on points
*25 points is the current bubble number
*8 teams have played in neither week
*If you take every team who have played both their ranked weeks and divide their scores by two then re-sort (creating a standardized ranking as though each team had played once) 23 points is the bubble number.

Based on that data I'd bet the magic number is 46 this year but teams might get in as low as 40 due to declines.

Miss being with you guys back there in MI though!

Do you know hoe to play Skat? My buddies from the German office of my old company taught me how to play that fine German card game. I was told it is still played in parts of Texas. I now only get to play it against a computer.

My grandparents told me that the good Southern Baptists didn't allow card playing so they modified Euchre to a domino game. Bid, Trump, tricks, mostly the same. And good luck to the Chicks at Troy.....don't pick 469 and figure out how to defend it for the rest of us!

I played Skat long ago but have forgotten it. Big German influence in central and several other parts of TX. Not so much in the redneck piney woods where I grew up.

Actually this is a good idea. They have an auto to states and it might be a good time to go up against an alliance that has a bot like 469 for practice towards Atlanta. If i was in their position i would atleast think about that option. Hey, it might happen anyway.

None, actually. Due to the increase of teams (there's 140 this year [increase of 12], I believe) no teams got to go to 3 districts. There were actually a couple with 41 teams, as opposed to the usual 40. Next year we might have to see an 8th district competition?

Ryan Caldwell 25-03-2010 13:48

Re: State Rankings...Lets do it ourselves.

I have yet to see a District with 40 teams due to teams not showing up.

I think its great we're growing fast, but how many of our rookie teams are sustainable. The ones that don't even show up, i have a sneeking suspision they wont be back next year. (Economy rant)

Basel A 25-03-2010 14:14

Re: State Rankings...Lets do it ourselves.

There's only one team that hasn't passed inspection at any district, and they are scheduled to be at another competition. Some teams may have arrived late, or similar problems, but as an overall, 134 Michigan FRC teams have competed this season, which is, in fact, more than last year. Of course it's harder to be sustainable this year than last (With the Chrysler Foundation cutting a lot of funding, etc., etc.), but the fact is, each year, more teams are competing.

Every year, the growth in teams is about double the loss of teams (http://team358.org/files/frc_records...Lost_Teams.jpg)

Almost completely sure that was generalized. There's definitely only 64. (Though teams down to 75 could get a chance with how many teams can actually afford to go; We got in from 71 last year)
