2010 Midwest Regional

I'm a little surprised here hasn't been a thread about the Midwest Regional this year. It may be lacking some of the teams from last year (1114, 217, 1024) but still has a plethora of elite teams to make it exciting with 16, 71, 111, 1625. Anyone else excited?

This is the first time in six years that I won't be making it to the Midwest Regional. (Sad, I know!)

I'll be attending Boilermaker with 1720. But I'm still excited to hear all about Midwest. Best of luck to all teams!!

Last time I came here I took a train (just like this time) but I got here so late I got here in time for the semi-finals in 2008 just in time to watch 1024 practically light on fire.
This time I rode down much sooner and I got to get introduced to Chicago a little more thanks to my lovely tour guide Kelli.
I think I'll be able to enjoy the regional a whole lot more this time as well.

Ed, if you get bored in Chicago, it is a short trip south to the Boilermaker Regional!

Ball redirector is what I envisioned them building when I was in WWBB (What Would Beatty Build?) part of my design process. As amazing as 469 is, there are some minor improvement that can be made to that strategy.

any updates from the arena on the field problems and the big namers unveiling?

XaulZan11 18-03-2010 20:22

Re: 2010 Midwest Regional

Nope, 71 is not another 469 type robot. Instead they have a 4 wheel crab, side rollers ball magnet (I think) and a super effective lifter (kinda like 2753). Should be another good year for The Beast.

Other than the normal teams doing well, 2949 was impressive. They have a suction similar to 111 and a solid kicker that is accurate from the middle zone.

The most impressive team, I thought was 16.

As epected, there are a lot of elite teams but then a lot of teams that will be still working to get their robot to work right until pits closing.

There were not too many field errors until the end when alot of the teams were just going to test their connection, even if they were not ready to practice. It leads me to believe that most of the errors were on the teams, not the field.

robself705 18-03-2010 20:55

Re: 2010 Midwest Regional

I think you must have missed the wormhole generator they have hiding in there, that way they can manipulate the balls without anyone knowing. They don't even need a human trident holder, their robot does it all with max efficiency. All of this is done, of course with one 18.5 Ah battery.

Yes, join them, but the red alliance will likely want to boost their seeding score, so the blue alliance will have to defend their goals in order to maximize 2781, 2949, 2803 seeding points. If 2781, 2949, 2803 were smart, two of them would plug up their goals and the third would help 16, 1625 and 111 score. That way 16, 1625, 111 can't score for the blue alliance, in an effort to boost the red alliances seeding points.

This is the same field that was used in Wisconsin and the blue side never worked correctly there either. Guess they weren't able to fix it during the week.

Week 1 (at FLR) didn't have this issue. But last weekend when I was at Pitt, we had the issues. I am thinking it's the new update that they sent out for the extra 5 points that is messing somethings up.

That was awesome. Looks like an entire robot, drives, kicker, and all. Then they actually had to use it when they did flip going over a bump!

I'm the volunteer who is broadcasting the stream this year and I am recording as I broadcast. I am just going to have one very long video file at the end of the day though, so I don't know how soon the recorded video will make it online.

I'd recommend stopping the video recording at lunch, unless you already know the file size limitations of your recording system

Thanks for such a high-resolution stream. It's easily the best one I've watched this year for clarity.

Anyone there know what's going on with the field? There are usually only 1-2 robots moving. Autonomous seems to work, but then everyone dies in tele-op. I also have not heard the field fault signal at all this season. Did FIRST remove it?

16 didn't move in their last match. If Match 18 is going to be what you want it to be, that better get fixed.

*Edit* - they're moving.

Also, I've noticed they're calling carrying penalties here. 71 got a few, as did another team.

I gotta ask - How is it that 71 is so low in the standings? I just watched Q46, and they were extremely effective - they shot all 3 balls the whole field in auton, then scored rapidly in teleop. Have they just had astounding bad luck? (this is the first match of theirs I've managed to watch today, so if they didn't get inspected until now, I guess that'd make sense)

I only saw a few early matches, but alliance penalties seemed to hurt them, including several self-imposed carrying penalties (2 pointers, ouch). I'm not sure if they've taken care of that issue since I last watched them.

I was just about to comment on how depressing and anti-climatic the match music is. They need some really upbeat/fast paced/intense techno.

From what I've been told, earlier in the day Beatty was being penalized for their kicker extending beyond the frame perimeter for more than 2 seconds. It looks like they've taken care of their issues, earning 73 seeding points in their last three matches. They've gone from 40th all the way to 8th place in standings.

This is one of the reasons I like the new scoring system - Since it isn't directly dependent on discrete matches, it is possible to make up for lost time if you've been unlucky or broken for a match or two. If you lost 2 or more matches in past years, you'd be out of the running for the top 8 for sure.

Match 65 was pretty exciting. Baxter put in a bunch of balls in a row, then two robots were hanging on the Blue tower at the same time.

I didn't realize how much the tunnel would interfere with short, center zone hangers. They just barely make it up.

Robots should position themselves to ride the vertical pole up when hanging if at all possible - offset their stance so their bumper rests on the pole before elevation.

I would like to personally thank teams that were helping in Chicago over the weekend. I am sure I am going to miss several teams since there was a lot going on. However, thanks to Bomb Squad, Beatty, Winovation, Hilltoppers, WildStang and all the Caterpillar teams. The rookies and some veterans had a wonderful weekend because you guys took time away from your own robot to help others. I know our Turkey team had a good time. If I forgot to thank your team here, I hope I remembered to thank you in person over the weekend. Teams like yours make my job much easier.

Wow, what a weekend. Just to be around some many of the best teams in FIRST was special enough. Friday afternoon (where we played against 1625, then against 111, then with 16, and then with 71 against 16) was probably the most fun and exciting stretch of qualification matches I've been apart of. The regional would have been worth it then, but then you add in Saturday's elimination matches and you get a weekend that I'll never forget.

Huge thanks to 16. With such a quick and agile drivetrain and an accurate kicker, you are simply deadly in the first two zones. Even with 71, 111, and 1625, they were #1 on our list the entire competition. Robot aside, everyone I talked to on the Bomb Squad was super nice and professional. I can't think of another team I would rather be on an alliance with.

Thanks again to 3352, who was willing to do anything necessary to win. From not running their autonomous mode, to scoring, to playing defense, to blocking, they did it all. I'm expecting big things from them in the future.

Congrats to the finalists 2949, 2358 and 3110. Once you knocked off the 111/1625 alliance, I knew we needed to bring our A game. 2949 really seems to be a team on the rise. I look forward to seeing how they do in Toronto and in future years.

Congrats to 1625 on the Chairman's award. Atlanta would not have been the same without Winnovation!

Thanks to everyone who makes Midwest such an amazing event - none better.

Team 1732: Hilltopper Robotics is a well-run and professional organization with a lot of fun mixed in. So glad to see you having such a great season. Thanks for picking us! See you in Atlanta.

Team 3352: Great team, very cool under pressure. It was a joy to be on your alliance. Hope to see you in Atlanta as well.

Team 1625: Congratulations on the RCA. Your program is just amazing. Thanks for all you do.

It is always so great to compete at Midwest; the toughest competition against (and with) our very best FIRST pals. Thank you for always making us feel at home!

For those of you who didn't notice the "suits" surrounding the Bomb Squad pit and team, a very large contingent of Baxter executives was with us for the duration of the tournament. I can't describe the feeling of winning the event in the presence of our corporate sponsor's (and Midwest Regional sponsor) CEO. He was so pleased.

Thank you all for making us look so great in front of the boss. :)

Thanks to everyone that made the Midwest "the best regional!" We really do appreciate all the time, effort and talent that made this regional run so smoothly and fun to attend.

Congrats to 1732, 16, and 3352 on your well deserved win. All amazing teams, but especially proud of 3352! You guys did awesome for your rookie event. Article in local paper started off "Robot Cinderella is going to the Big Dance." :) We're very proud of your accomplishments.

Thanks to team 111 and 3135 for being our alliance partners!

Congrats to the Chicago Knights for the Engineering Inspiration Award! Your team does so much.

The matches against 111 and 1625 were the most intense matches of the entire regional for us. They played such a great game. :D

Thank you all for making us look so great in front of the boss. :)

Baxter and NASA made this FRC season possible for 1781. I appreciated and I think the kids did as well the level of interest Baxter in particular showed us at the regional. It was great to be able to personally thank Robert (Baxter's CEO) for his support and it was fun to provide him a win-win situation when two Baxter sponsored teams were pitted against each other in the semis. Also a volunteer from NASA, who served as a field coordinator went out of her way to say hello to our team.

Thanks to Team 71 and 3067 for the good run in the elimination round.

Despite having a small team I hope our tiny acts of Gracious Professionalism helped others get their robot working the way they wanted.

I also want to thank Al Skierkiewicz for all his continued support and advice. Although the need has diminished (I must be learning something!) it always is appreciated.

I might be able to get some video up starting this weekend. I'll put the semifinal and final matches up first.

Nice job, Randy. In case you haven't noticed, Randy is a very talented guy and spends a great deal of every event he attends shooting video. This is but one of the great videos he has produced over the years.

Thanks for the kind words, Al.
Yes, my wife Dee and I have been capturing photos and video for some years. Somehow, she does most of the work and I get most of the credit..
This particular piece was a total team effort by part of the Team Hammond Film Crew. Students and mentors filmed and collected photos and we were able to produce the video in time to show right before the award ceremony. It was great teamwork...

Then my congratulations to Dee as well. It was the kind of video that "kept em riveted" in Chicago.
