2010 Hawaii Regional
The Hawaii Regional is less than a week away, so who's coming? Who wishes they were coming? ;)
Let's make it the best regional yet! |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
For our visitors 203 from New Jersey, 1920 from Louisiana, and 1544 and 1548 from Alaska, mahalo for joining us and we can't wait for your arrival!
For those of you unable to join us this year, we're hoping you'll definitely consider the Hawaii Regional for a future season. From teams that we've had the fortune of hosting in previous years, the responses have generally been that the Hawaii Regional was one of the best they've ever attended! We hope this year is no different. With BAE Systems and Hawaii's Robotics Organizing Committee, the Hawaii Regional Planning Committee has been planning a great regional including opening and closing ceremonies not to be missed! My understanding is the event will not only be webcast, but on NASA TV also. I'll post more information as it becomes available. Hoping you'll all stay tuned, and good luck to all the teams competing this weekend! |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
968 attended the first Hawaii regional in 2008, and if we had the money, we'd be back there every year. The place, the people, and the competition are all just fantastic! Good luck to all teams competing there this week. :)

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Just wanted to add that all teams get lunches for all 3 days at the event, plus a great friday night social at the Hawaii Hard Rock Cafe!
Cant beat that! If I'm not mistaken, mainland teams are still met at the airport with leis too! No excuses CA teams!! If you can afford to go to Atlanta, you can certainly make it to HI. Just think of what us Hawaii teams have to do just to attend your regionals.:) |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
I guess we know who the Rookie All-star will be this year? And the highest rookie seed.
Makes me wonder how the awards are handled for a regional with /no/ rookies. |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
I've been trying to get a mentor "scouting trip" out to Hawaii for years now. We'll be competing in Troy, MI this weekend, so it didn't work out this year. Perhaps next year......

Early congrats to Ka'u (Team 3306). (Or is it too early?) |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Fortunately in this situation, Ka'u was able to know in advance that they should begin thinking about travel plans and fundraising to get to Atlanta.
I have to wonder if both Rookie Inspiration and Rookie All-Star is awarded (along with Highest Seeded Rookie) or if just the All-Star (which is the Championship qualifying award) is given out. |

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
I wish I could go to the Hawaii regional again. It was the best FIRST regional experience of my life. I hope the event goes well and good luck to all the teams!

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Did I mention the breakfast coupons that each team gets for McDonalds so that you can also eat for free BEFORE you get to the tournament daily?;)
|
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Field is ready, practice field is good to go (mahalo to 359 for the platform), and everything else is set!
Good luck to all teams this weekend! And we're still looking for a few good volunteers for some tasks, so if you or anyone on your team are willing to help out for a day (free shirt and meals woo), just come seek me out and we'll get you all set up. |

If you've got some time, check out the opening ceremony for the regional (and stick around to watch the regional itself!).
Attached is just a small sample of what to expect (from rehearsals after the pits closed tonight). The webcast link will be posted an hour prior to the opening ceremonies on NASA's webcasts page, and also will be live on NASA TV (looks like the whole of Friday will be broadcast live on the public channel according to the NASA TV schedule). Events begin at 9am (noon Pacific, 3pm Eastern). Here's hoping more mainland teams will consider Hawaii next year! (which looks to be March 24-26 based on the university's Spring Break) The attached image has elements of Friday's opening ceremony and Saturday's closing ceremony. |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
I'm sad to not attend the Hawaii Regional this year. This regional is outstanding, and well worth the money and effort to make it to Oahu.
Mark Koors is out there again this year, as the FTA, and he called me Monday night, rubbing it in that he is in Hawaii this week. We may have to do something to his desk as a surprise for his return. Best of luck to all the teams competing in Hawaii, and aloha to all of my Hawaii friends! Sincerely, Andy Baker |

Anyone have video of the opening ceremony online?

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
WOW! With the super-strict fire codes in Hawaii, I'm impressed they pulled this off. I would have been freaking out big time if that was my FMS computer/hardware right there.

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
I think that hawaii has one of the best regionals!!! Amazing opening ceremony this year Fireworks were insane.:D

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Congrats to our alliance partners 368 and 2467 for a great run in winning the Hawaii regional.
In our 11 year history, 359 and 368 finally won a regional together after being a finalist all 3 times in the past when we lost to the eventual regional champs in 2000, 2003, and 2008. WE FINALLY DID IT! Both of us had an 18-0-0 record and were ranked 1 and 2 respectively. We will be ready for Atlanta!!!! I expect Hawaii to rock there!! |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Mahalo especially to 359 for selecting us and congratulations on your impressive three-peat. While I thought this was the Year of the Tiger by the Chinese calendar, I think it's quite appropriately the Year of the Bulldog!
Mahalo also to 2467 for rounding out our alliance. All three of us now get to go both to Atlanta and to Dallas (for VEX)! A special congratulations to 3008 on your Chairman's win. It is definitely well deserved from everything I've seen. I would be remiss not to thank all the volunteers who made the event happen. Hopefully we'll see more and more alumni from teams volunteer in the years to come once they've graduated. |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Pretty good haul for 2438 this year, between the Quality Award and our build captain making Dean's List. Great job to 359, 2467 and 368 (as usual), and a huge thanks to our alliance partners from Maui High and Farrington. With regards to our elimination performance, I was thrilled with where we ended up--losing to the ultimate winners in the semis was certainly a dignified way to go out. We're also hugely proud of the first semifinal match, which we only lost (12-9) because of Waialua and McKinley's double hang. Sadly, none of our alliance's members will be heading to Worlds (at least not on qualification from this regional), but 2438 at least will see you guys in Dallas for VEX. Thanks for making our third Hawaii regional awesome!

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
There is not much more that can be said about Hawaii regional. The entertainment value was light-years beyond anything I've seen before. Expect many teams to apply for Hawaii regional next year. I want to say thank you to all the teams who attended and made this event really special not only for me but for the whole team. Special thanks to Iolani and farrington for being such great partners. My only wish is that i could come back next year but it seems like my time with FIRST will be on hold for a while. On behalf of everyone from Team 2443-Blue Thunder, I want to say that it has been an honor competing with such great people during these last three years. Good luck to everyone in Georgia and in Dallas.

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
I know the event has ended, but here's some video of the very beginning...

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
2443, it was great working with you guys. You had a really amazing bot, and you were a huge reason why we got as far as we did in the elimination rounds. We really appreciate the compliments and look forward to seeing you guys at next year's competition!
P.S. Just a slight correction: 2438 is `Iolani, not Kalani. (We get this a lot, since Kalani means "heavenly falcon" and `Iolani means "heavenly hawk". We also tend to get confused with other teams at our regional due to our number: the Hawaii regional contains teams 2438 (us), 2348, 2437, and 2439.) See you next year! |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
By the way, a couple videos of the entertainment to kick off the awards ceremony on Saturday.

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Just wondering, where did most teams stay in Honolulu? Waikiki, or up near Pearl? I am trying to get the team to go to Hawaii and St. Louis next year. Mahalo.

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
the Ala Moana hotel offers a great deal at $89/night. We have stayed there ever since the Hawaii regional started. Great thing about it is the kids can go shopping as the shopping center is right next door.
The HI RPC works out deals with hotels in Waikiki to get good rates for FRC teams if you choose to go that route. Both areas are very close to the Univ. of Hawaii where the tournament is held. |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Thanks to Keith Uehara and his crew for putting together this photo and video montage of the event.

Be sure to click the HQ button to get Hi-Res it is much better quality. Unfortunately it has a picture of the back of my head. I have been in denial about the bald spot for 30 years. Our documentation team knows never to publish a picture of me from that angle. |
Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
Speaking of high res and better quality, we've finally got the whole regional uploaded to YouTube. Video is of the whole field so you can see all the action and is viewable at both 720p as well as 1080p. Score breakdowns are via the Twitter feed* (which mysteriously lost a few matches). Also, two matches are unfortunately incomplete due to forgetting to press Record on time... woops!

Re: 2010 Hawaii Regional
We'd like to send McKinley Robotics a huge MAHALO for posting the matches for the entire 2010 Hawaii Regional on YouTube. Awesome job!
