North Carolina Regional
Hi i know its only 9 days a way i was just wondering where everyone is staying 2228 is staying at the embassy crabtree and good luck to all teams
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
Good luck to all teams competing at the first-ever North Carolina Regional. I am excited to be the Lead Robot Inspector. I hear we have a crew of 16 inspectors total, so the inspection process should be a good one.
Sincerely, Andy Baker |
Re: North Carolina Regional
I can't wait for North Carolina and the 15 hour car ride! :) Oh and the fact that we all will be wearing some awesome socks!
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
16 inspectors - Wow !
1311 is staying at Embassy Suites RTP |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Oscar is staying at the Best Western Raleigh North.
Andy Baker and 16 inspectors! Very awesome! Andy Baker once inspected by himself all 400 robots at Championships in 1 day. I hardly see the need for 16 more inspectors! |
Re: North Carolina Regional
1902 is excited to headed up to NC, and with Andy as inspector we'll finally find out if our bot passes the Baker test!
Only a week +1 til we ship out. |
Re: North Carolina Regional
2415 will be at the Hampton Inn! Looking forward to the inaugural NC Regional! :D

All three West Virginia teams are headed to NC. Think we can all wear our WVU shirts on Saturday afternoon? We have made changes to control the ball better and should be a better scorer than in Pittsburgh. Looking forward to the trip.
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
I can't wait. The team social should be pretty good too.
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
48 will be staying at the Fairfield Inn Crabtree. The bulk of the team is leaving Wednesday evening early and arriving right at the start of the event on Thursday. Hurray for cost savings.
I, on the other hand, will be coming down with 379 a day earlier, because I don't fancy spending all day on my feet immediately after spending all night on a cramped bus. :) Raleigh Weather: http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USNC0558 |
Re: North Carolina Regional
yep all of 2228 is leaving at 600 in the morning for the 13 hour bus ride down yeah cant wait

I can't wait; this looks like it's going to be a very deep regional in terms of robot quality. 2614 will be in the Crabtree as well. |

|
Re: North Carolina Regional
My family of volunteers (myself, your head ref and a scorekeeper) are excited to be there! I have no idea where we're staying though, and we may be bringing another volunteer from our FIRST family :)
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
This is going to be a great regional! We are driving down there on Wednesday and exploring the area a bit. Good Luck to everyone! See ya on the field :)
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
I'm leaving first thing in the morning. We have a tour set up at UNC Chapel Hill on Wednesday at 3:30. Bacon will be ready to play after that. Can't wait to see our friends from Ohio again!!

|
Re: North Carolina Regional
We are staying at Wingate by Windham near the airport! :p I hope there are other teams there! If our ball handling improvements work like the do in practice up here than we should keep up with that Magic Minute! Come by the pit and see them! Or in the stands where i'll be cuz you can't do much on the robot with stitches!;)
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
y ill be able to go in the pit probably on thursday for pit scouting and doubt it much of the week because i am our teams strategist and scouting lead
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
Two more days! (Well, we're driving up tomorrow :) )
Looking forward to an awesome competition! We're also pleased to announce that if we spot random acts of gracious professionalism, we may have a prize... But on the other hand-members of the WiredCats will be floating around handing out Adopt-a-Tree fliers if anyone's interested in receiving a Meyer Spruce Tree! |
Re: North Carolina Regional
We are leaving right afterschool today and staying in the Crabtree Holiday Inn! Can't wait to see everyone there tomorrow!
Good Luck! Petrie |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Anyone seen details on a Webcast for NC. None is listed. I want to watch Bacon compete.
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
We have made it down today and checked into the hotel. Drove down to Dorton this evening to make sure the directions i had were right. Very easy to get to and lots of room for unloading the trailer in the morning. Can't wait to compete.
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
Almost all of the team has arrived at our hotel and we all can't wait until tomorrow!
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
Dang, what a crazy Thursday! Thanks to all the teams that helped us get through our technical and code problems! And big thanks to Andy Baker for checking on the CAN issue during inspection for us :)
I'm sitting here gulfing down breakfast waiting impatiently for the bus to pull around, looking over the code one last time praying that autonomous will work tomorrow. Thanks to all the judges and volunteers that are making this inaugural regional so much fun; I'm sure today will be even better than yesterday! |

Re: North Carolina Regional
Thank you team 1086 and 48 for the awesome alliance! it was looking like it just wasn't going to be there for a while. Congrats teams 1519, 1772 and 1741 for putting up such a good battle.
I wish I could have been there to see it, heck wish I could have seen it from here. Thanks to everyone who has been sending me text message updates, Marissa, Dan, Kell, Jonell, Michelle, and Alex. |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Wooot Bacon and Cheese ELITE!!! A few of my favorite teams. Congrats guys!
|
Re: North Carolina Regional
Congrats to teams 1086, 48 and 1902. Wish I could have seen it.
1519, 1772 and 1741 you gave us a big scare and gave a good battle. |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Tons of Congrats to 1086, 1902, and 48! You guys played an amazing game. Especially congrats to 1086 for their marvelous display of gracious professionalism!
Also, congrats to 1519,1772, and 1741 for being finalists! They had to work hard the whole time and they put up a very good fight! This regional was super fun! (Especially the ice cream social!) Although we overheated Friday and semi-froze Saturday (probably due to heat change), we were never (that far) behind time! :) This was one of the best regionals that I have been to! |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Just got back to Ohio about an hour ago with a smile on my face the whole way home.
Many thanks to 1086 - Blue Cheese and 1902 - Exploding Bacon for choosing us as the final member of that awesome alliance that is now the Inaugural North Carolina Regional Champions. Bacon and Cheese ELITE. :D Congrats to 1519, 1772 and 1741 on regional finalists. As I expected from having a birds eye view throughout the finals and echoed by my fellow field resetters, your alliance was going to very tough to beat and it made for a very exciting set of finals matches. We went through the finals as they should be, tooth and nail til the buzzer sounds. Overall the event was run fairly smoothly especially for being a rookie regional and I would like to thank the volunteer crew that I worked along side all weekend and Dave Butler for being an excellent field manager in his first ever year as a volunteer. Other than the temperature in the arena at about 3pm and the sun in the pits until about 11am I would say this regional was one of the better ones I have seen and I wouldn't mind seeing my team return there soon. Thanks to all and Good Night! or morning..or whatever I'm too tired to discern. |

I had to laugh as we stopped for dinner on the way home. Wendy[mom?]'s named a sandwich after us. See attachment.
Thanks to 1086 and 1902 for picking us and for leading a great run through the elimination rounds. After dealing with a lot of bugs earlier in the season, I'm just happy that our drivetrain was reliable enough at this event to contribute positively to an elimination round alliance. Congratulations to 1519, 1772, and 1741 for a fine performance and a thrilling finals series. A shout out to our friends on 379 for their very strong showing. North Carolina was an awesome event all around, executed superbly. Thanks to all event volunteers and the marquis cast of characters who made the regional what it was. :) One request - if teams have pictures and video of our alliance and our elimination round matches, I'd appreciate it if they could contact me via PM. |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Guys,
First let me start off by saying this competition was a total pleasure! Everyone came to this new regional with enthusiasm and open hearts! Being part of the mechanical team it was great fun to be with all of you in the pits. 1902 and 48, you two were awesome partners, no explanations needed but: great groups, great leadership, great robots, GREAT FUN! See you guys in Atlanta! 1519, 1772, and 1741... You guys really gave us a run for our money and were fun to compete with, your offense, and especially your defense was top of the line! I want to thank 401 for having a great time during the Team Social! The Ultimate Frisbee was most definitely one of the highlights of my time in North Carolina! I also want to give a special thanks to 587, The Hedgehogs. You guys were especially nice and gracious in the pits. When we had a possibly shortage of charged batteries in the finals you guys offered to lend us one, and for that I thank you! 122, you guys come, and you come in force! The NASA Knights showed up ready themselves, and ready to help others. While working I saw them helping multiple teams in need, and I believe they deserve recognition for that! I want to also thank the North Carolina Fair Grounds. The building we were in was one of the best buildings I have competed in! Natural light, occasional fresh breeze, stands that everyone could see from... It was great. I hope 1086 will be able to attend again in the future. The Final Ceremonies ended on time, if not earlier! For this the Volunteers and Coordinators deserve special recognition. After the three hour delay in VCU (Not their fault) it was great to be able to get home before 1:00AM (inside joke). Last but not least by any means, I wish to thank both Dean Kamen and Andy Baker. Most of our team at one point or another asked for you gentlemen to sign our cheeseheads. Both of them also did a fantastic job at what they did. There were many teams unprepared with the snow and Mr. Baker was able to get everyone inspected in a timely fashion. And everyone who attended saw Mr. Kamen's new merchandise in the Closing Ceremonies. That lightbulb was a bright idea! |
Re: North Carolina Regional
I recorded all of the matches except for qual 1 and 37 on my camcorder. ''I was having issues but the rest of the tape looks really nice.'' I will have them available for download here in the next few weeks.
Oh, and I had a great time talking to Gabrielle on team 48 ''Delphi Elite'' also. I got to talk to some members of Exploding Bacon and some people on team Krunch. I had a blast talking to you guys. |
Re: North Carolina Regional

I was also wondering if anyone captured the moment when Dean got smacked in the head by a deflected ball during one of our matches. He was all right afterward, but his reaction at the moment was rather interesting. Our bot happened to be right next to him at the time. |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Catching up on lost sleep and waiting for the adrenaline to wear off, I got to do one of my other great loves – “NO NOT BUILDING ANOTHER ROBOT”- spending time with my family.
The NC Regional was a fantastic event, Marie E. Hopper put on an INCREDIBLE EVENT – Andy Baker and Dean Kamen were just a few things that made this an over the top regional. Teams I would like to thank: 1902 Exploding Bacon – you guys never got tired of my childish ranting of your great chant “OINK, OINK - - BOOM”. My cheese head is off to your build and programming team – I don’t think that 1086 could have gotten 3346 through inspection without you guys. Bacon Mentors – your students are great and a testament to what good role models you must be. The drive team hanging at the last minute and following the plan to the T, it was truly a pleasure working with BACON. To your drive coach take good care of the cheese head! 48 Delphi Elite – I wish could have met the rest of your team but your Drive Team was a great group to work with performing the task given them and sticking to it. Defending and scoring to the very end. Travis – great mentor and thanks for the picture of the sandwich – it makes me remember that this should be fun. 122 NASA Knights – Your mentors are incredible, helping multiple teams all at the same time AMAZING. It was great to have familiar face with us in NC. 1519 Mechanical Mayhem – Great robot, incredible autonomous and sorry about busting your ball capture. You guys made the finals a show worth watching Ken Streeter your students must have the greatest appreciation for you – I feel honored to stand with you as a fellow WFA winner. 1772 Trail Blazers – We never got to meet but what a fight you gave the Elite – Bacon – Blue Cheese alliance. 1741 Red Alert – Andy Baker gave me a hint that you guys would be a great pick, it is too bad we could not have run with you instead of against you, great finals we look forward to seeing you in Atlanta. 401 Hokie Guard – Sorry we couldn’t make the alliance selections work but it was great playing with you guys at VCU and NC regional’s. Andy Baker as always it was great to spend time with you; maybe we can actual work together as an alliance – See ya at champs. Michael Coleman – my students learned a lot during your inspection – truly a great experience for team 1086. To all the Volunteers WOW first time regional, on time, no replays, no field faults – thanks |
Re: North Carolina Regional
The Flying Platypi had a great time at their first "Home" regional!
We would like to thank 449 for picking us for their 7th seed alliance! It was the first time our team wasn't 8th seed and it (at least for me) felt great. Also thank you 2415 for filling out the alliance and being a great scorer. Thanks to the judges, volunteers, sponsors, and Marie! Congratulations teams 1519, 1772, 1741, 1068, 48, and 1902! You made the finals a real nail-biter and great to watch! A big congratulations to 1311 on Chairman's and all the other teams that won an award. I had an awesome time at the regional and can't wait until next year! |

on behalf on 2228 i would like to thank teams 401 and 2614 for being such great alliance partners. I just wished i could have used a little better strategy but the event was run smoothly. This was also my last event as a student but i am definitely going to mentor for a long time to come and congrats to 1519.1772.1741 and 1086 48 and 1902

Re: North Carolina Regional
Congratulations to the great State of North Carolina for hosting their 1st FIRST Robotics Competition Event.
And super congratulations to everyone that attended and especially to the award winning teams with great robots. Almost. I never wanted to simultaneously win an RCA and rank badly with the robot but we we came in 44th out of 44. Ouch. As my racing friends say, sometime you are the windshield and sometimes you are the bug. North Carolina Regional Event - a great time to be had by one and all ! |
Re: North Carolina Regional
I would like to start out saying that this was a great regional, certainly alot more than I expected!
Team 1086 Blue Cheese Even though sometimes I mixed up your team name I thought your robot was one of the most amazing machines at North Carolina. Once I heard you guys say our name and number in alliance selection I knew that it was going to be some awesome Elimination Rounds. Thank you very much for trusting and picking us to play with you. Elite Ham and Cheese was an awesome alliance! Team 48 Delphi Elite I personally didn't get to talk to you guys alot this competition but it was awesome having you as an alliance partner, you guys did great, and I'm glad I got to work with you guys! Team 79 Krunch We sadly never got to play with each other here as we wished to do. But I really enjoyed having our pits right across from yours that was so much fun to come over and talk when there was a little bit of down time (if any at all). To 1519,1741,1772 The finals matches were awesome set of matches and you gave Elite Ham and Cheese a run for their money. You guys did great! I know I am forgetting a few teams/people in here but thank you to everyone who made this regional a truly exceptional regional! It was a ton of fun and only can wonder what it will be like next year!!! Exploding Bacon had a Blast OINK! OINK! BOOM!!! |

Re: North Carolina Regional
Wow, what a regional.
1086, you guys rock. Great bot, great team, great hats. I'll be keeping the one your drive coach gave me safe. I currently have up on my mantle. I hope we get to play with each other again in Atlanta. 48, you guys rock, and you have one of the coolest teams ever. Your drive team brought the party and didn't want to stop rocking till the final buzzer. I told your drive team that we had played together in one of our first matches of the tournament and I wanted to play together in the last. I'm glad we made good on that promise. 1519, 1772 and 1741 you guys performed amazingly. I was unsure on how we would be able to beat you guys and was astonished when we did. I have to say you guys did your homework too, 1741 was possibly the pick of the century. When we made our pick list we believed they were a top 10 team. How they fell so far, no one will ever know. To all our old friends and new thanks for making it a great regional. Every year we travel to a newer regional we get a bit nervous about what to expect. North Carolina did not dissapoint. It ran like clockwork, and nearly felt like the championships with the star studded cast of voluneteers. So great work volunteers and thanks for putting on the regional of a lifetime for us here on Bacon. Oink Oink Boom! |
Re: North Carolina Regional
Hey team 2614 was wondering if any team from the NC Regional filmed the final awards ceremony, especially with the MC reading off the award preludes. We filmed the entire event except for the awards and I know that some of us would like to show our parents and other team members who couldn't make it to the event. If anyone has that flim and they would be willing to share, could you please email me at slaminswimster@aol.com or just post a link here.
Thanks!! |

I would like to congratulate Marie, Margy and Jim along with all the other volunteers who ran this regional. I was fortunate to work along side these great organizers and help with the student ambassadors. I really appreciated all of the students who helped give VIP tours. Kendall (Blue Cheese), Tom (wiredcats), Carly and Rachel (Red Alert) Katie (Exploding Bacon) Craig, Courtney and Martin and all the Longhorns sat at the table for hours just waiting patiently. You were amazing. Many of the VIPs took the time to come back and tell me how impressive you were.
I have been going to Regionals for 6 years and you would have never known this was the first time out for North Carolina. Thanks for giving us a great experience. |

Re: North Carolina Regional
Team 401 would like to thank teams 2228 and 2614 for choosing us to be a part of your alliance during the elimination tournament. I really wish we could have gone further, but we had some tough opposition in teams 379, 79, 832. Those were two of the toughest matches we have ever played. You guys played smart!
1519: I really enjoyed getting to know your drivers! It was nice talking strategy with you guys and mingling a bit at the Ice Cream social. My best wishes to you and your team in Atlanta. Say hello to Noel for me! He was quite the inspiration! 1902: I was so excited to be able to run with, as well as against, you guys during qualifications. It was great catching up on the old days of FIRST with your driving coach. He was also extremely supportive of our team during elims. I really wish we could have made the alliance work... Turkey, Bacon and Swiss sounds like one heck of a sandwich! 1086: Out of all the teams at the regional, i was most impressed with your team. All of you students were very supportive of us and showed their gracious professionalism to the extreme. Your team deserves a huge pat on the back. Your driving coach, Mr. Clarke, or as i remember him "Chainsaw" has been the biggest inspiration of all. Mr. Clarke, you and I go way back to the days when you coached me as a driver in 2004! Since then, i have never forgotten what FIRST has given me and i was so thrilled to be able to work with you this past weekend. It was a great feeling to know i will always have your support during the good times and the bad. Trust me, one of these days we will make for an amazing alliance to the end...both on the field of FIRST and on the field of life. YOU are the reason i want to continue my journey with FIRST forever. Best of luck to you and 1086 at nationals this year, i'll be pulling for you guys! |
Re: North Carolina Regional
We have so many great memories from the North Carolina Regional and so many people to thank that it is hard to try to get them all in to one posting!
First off, I want to thank Marie Hopper and all of the other volunteers who planned, organized, and conducted the event! The event ran very smoothly, and the venue was fantastic! Even starting before the event with helpful information updates, through load-in, practice rounds, inspections, qualifications, eliminations, and closing ceremonies, all aspects were well-planned and effectively executed. There didn't seem to be anything "rookie" about this regional -- this was a top-notch FIRST regional event. Thanks so much for all of your labors to make this event a resounding success! I'd also like to commend Andy Baker and the tech inspection crew -- from what I observed, inspections were conducted efficiently and fairly -- it seemed that inspectors did their best to help teams resolve problems when needed, while maintaining an encouraging "can do" attitude! Now, on to the teams that I particularly remember for various reasons, in roughly chronological order: 2108 - We so much enjoyed being located next to you in the pits! You perfectly exemplified "southern hospitality" from the first moments we met you with your assistance setting up our pit shelving! Then, you helped us locate a Fastenal to purchase the M3-20 socket head cap screws we needed, loaned us various tools we didn't have room to bring down from New Hampshire, and used your awesome battery-powered band saw to help fabricate some spare parts for us. We're just sorry that we didn't end up on the same alliance in any of the qualification matches -- some "Awkward Mechanical Turtle Mayhem" would have been fun! 122 - Thanks so much for providing some essential 80/20 brackets to our team at a time when we really needed them! Without your quick assistance, we would have had to work a lot harder to fabricate brackets for mounting our replacement herding bar! 379 - Thanks for your show of gracious professionalism and helping others by letting us look at your award-winning business plan! We would very much appreciate it if when you get all unpacked, you could send us a copy -- hopefully the business card I gave your pit coaches is still around somewhere; if not, we should be able to re-connect via CD! 1533 - We were ecstatic to see that you were able to overcome the struggles with getting your autonomous code to work in Java -- there's definitely nothing quite like seeing an autonomous program work like it is supposed to! 435 - In qualification match 50, which was a key match for our team being that it was against the #1 and #3 seeded alliances, you perfectly executed our alliance strategy, playing phenomenal defense on 1086 in midfield. I don't think anybody would have thought it possible to hold them to only 1 goal for the entire match! 1311 - Your contributions in match 50 against team 2614 were also key to our alliance winning that match -- without a victory in that match, we couldn't have climbed back up the rankings to be the #2 seed. Thanks! 1811 - In the pre-match strategy sessions for qualification match 56, your drive team described your robot's limitations with more honesty and emphasis than I have ever encountered. By accurately describing your robot's limitations, you enabled our alliance (with team 900) to come up with a winning strategy for that match! If you had instead optimistically over-represented your robot's capabilities, our alliance would not have stood a chance at winning that match. I can only hope that our team will describe our robot's capability limitations as honestly, too! Thank you! 900 - I am very impressed by your gracious professionalism in the pre-match strategy sessions for match 56! That match was a perfect example of the conflict between needs to showcase one's robot in order to be picked for elimination rounds, and the need to work out a winning alliance strategy. Your graciousness in subordinating your team's own need to showcase your hanging ability and instead adopt a match strategy which didn't involve your team hanging was highly commendable! Thanks to your willingness to do that, our alliance achieved 26 ranking points in that match, one of the highest tallies in the tournament. Without that match being won by our alliance, we couldn't have finished as the #2 seed -- we couldn't have done it with out you. Thank you! We're also so glad that you were indeed picked for the eliminations -- in the first round even! 79 - I was very impressed by your robot's ability to so easily bulldoze balls up and over the bump out of midfield into the near zone -- at first glance, it looks like that should be so easy to do, but so few robots can do it at all, and your robot makes it look absolutely trivial. I don't know how you managed to get the geometry right for that, but you clearly have perfected it. Awesome job! 1772 - We were ever so glad to have you as alliance partners! Your team did everything we could have hoped for in the elimination matches and more! As a "striker", your robot was definitely the cream of the crop at the North Carolina regional -- not only scoring practically every ball that we and 1741 could feed into the near zone, but making frequent excursions out into the midfield to get more balls to score because we couldn't feed you balls fast enough! We're sorry to have let you down in the quest to bring home a regional win, but the battle damage to our robot was too extensive to effectively pick up balls in autonomous mode during the finals -- if only we had been able to clear the far zone autonomously in those matches, the final outcome might have been different. (It's a little too late for North Carolina, but we now have permanent fixes to the battle-damage issues for Atlanta -- maybe we'll be in the same division and can make a run at Einstein together.) From my perspective, it was your team that really carried our alliance in the finals! Well done! 1741 - We were astounded that your team was still available to be picked -- our scouting information put you much, much higher than the seeding scores! Your contribution to our finalist alliance with respect to strategy, starting flexibility, and reliable operation was unparalleled! I really thought that after winning the first of the finals matches we had a good shot at upsetting the #1 alliance -- thanks for having been a part of a great run! 48 - It was pretty clear to us that in the final rounds, your robot and its impressive drivetrain would be called upon to play "counter-D" (keeping us from defending 1086 in our far zone) against us in the elimination matches -- you can be very sure that we weren't particularly pleased about the prospects of doing that! 1902 - Congrats on being the #1 pick of the tournament -- your contribution to the winning alliance was an essential one! We were particularly impressed by the improvement on your robot throughout the tournament -- you went from being one of the "middle of the pack" robots at the beginning of qualification matches to one of the elite robots at the end -- well done! 1086 - Your team is a real class act, not just in terms of having built a great robot and leading the #1 seed alliance to victory, but with regard to your gracious professionalism, too! In the first finals match, when we and 48 become locked in an "A-frame" position with all wheels off the ground for both us and 48, your coming over to "free the deadlock" and restore us all to operation was a very classy move! Congratulations on the second regional win -- it is extremely well deserved. I'm sure I must have left a few teams out, as there were just too many excellent teams at this regional to remember everybody I should thank. Thanks again to all the organizers for having made the North Carolina Regional a top-notch event, and for everybody we talked to for extending us extremely welcoming hospitality! We'd love to come back again next year! |

I didn't realize at the time it was such a direct shot. Dean's got a superhuman nose. |
