The reason we latched onto the pole "incorrectly" is because there was some deformation to begin with. After reviewing the video of the match, there is a noticeable "dent" in the pipe before we even touch it, thus leaving the pipe not true to its diameter, making it impossible for our latching mechanism to fully click on.
That being said, we did leave 2 smaller indents in the pipe where the "fingers" of our grabber were pushed in with an amount of point loading that they and the pipe would not see under normal operating conditions of our grabber.
So yes, we did mark the pipe, but the damage that caused the pipe to be replaced wasn't necessarily all our fault.

John, we were not given a penalty, but since the damage to the pipe was brought to the attention of those managing the field right after our attempted hang, we were given a warning that if it was discovered we damaged the pipe from that point on that we would have to modify our mechanism as per the rules regarding field damage.
I can tell you that Team RUSH never left a mark on the pipe Saturday, which myself and my fellow drive team members inspected after each round.
