Re: What was your role each year on your team?

2007- I was an eighth grader when my dad co-started the team at Hammond High with Mrs. Gaydos. I was at most of the work nights on the weekends (The Midnight-Knights group). And I just helped out where I could. Being an eighth grader I couldn't do much.

2008- I joined the class and team as a freshman, doing little odd jobs while all the experienced members handled the advanced processes of working on the robot. The seniors helped mentor us lowly freshman whilst they worked. And I took a keen interest in the Website. I helped post links to pictures, type out walls of text and even ran and got coffee for my mentorious WebMaster as he so wanted me to call him...(It didn't happen. :D )

2009- I took over as Webmaster, Muahaha! And we lost 3/4's of our team when the seniors graduated. But alas we strove to continue on in glee. I didn't do much on the robot that year, other than help with the wiring.

2010- I am still the Webmaster and am planning on staying in this position until I graduate or keel over. :) And this year, I joined up with some of the mechanical group guys and helped with the actual building of the robot. Together, once competition came around, we formed the FIRST NASCAR Pit Crew. We performed some of the fastest, most critical fixes in the history of the team at the Bayou and Lone Star Regionals.

One time, we were in Que, and we noticed that one of our motor brackets was cracked(The weld of course.) So as to not risk a malfunction in the middle of the finals match, the Pit Crew went into overdrive and got the old bracket off and the new bracket on in less than 3 minutes, which gave us 3 extra minutes to relax while we waited for the time out to finish. :D

2006 - I was the battery man, in charge of charging and knowing which battery was to be used for each match.

2007 - I was the driver and semi battery guy.

2008 - I was once again the drive and Co-president along with my other co-driver.

2009 and on - I am now a mentor and hang around tohelp with what ever needs to be done.

I have wanted to join 818 for years. However I never had transportation to the meetings and thus was unable to do so. Luckily I was able to get in my senior year. I jumped in head first trying to force my self into anything I could.
  • I was actually one of the first to push for our team to build a defensive bot for this season.
  • I ended up being "Strategy Captain" and a Drive Coach in my first year!
  • It was my idea to recode down to a single driver.
  • I also helped the Scouting Captain out in any way I could, becoming his assistant Scouting Captain shortly after the beginning of Traverse City.
  • I plan to come back next year as the assistant programming mentor.

I'd say that it is safe to say that I've done a lot as a FIRST Freshman!

2002 - Team 93: CAD/Manipulations design: Finally joined as a Junior. Easy to get overwhelmed at first, but ended up helping out modeling parts and designing our goal grabbing mechanism. Helped out with scouting at events/ laying out in the sun at nationals in Disney.

2003 - Team 93: Co-Team leader/ CAD leader/ Strategy guy. This is the year I learned unless you have lots of resources, make your robot just really good at one thing, not decent at many. Strategy/Scouting at events. Had the fun of being the robot cart pusher at nationals in Texas.

2004-2007 - Away at college, Michigan Tech. My brother was on Team 93 then and still followed and even went to some events. At college I participated in ChallengeX (a hybrid vehicle competition) Helped me get my full time job.

2008 - Team 818: getting used to a different team/ animations mentor. Scouting/Strategy mentor at events.

2009 until ??? - Team 818: Manipulations Mentor as well as Scouting/Strategy Mentor at events.

It really upsets me that so many people on our team believe that I dislike Kyle.

My friends, I have only known Kyle for this year and although we butt heads a lot I have learned a lot from him. His knowledge of manipulations is astounding. When it comes to scouting I swear I think he is psychic and on top of that I have learned a lot about strategy from him.

Seriously though. He guessed which team would pick us and which pick we would be during the draft at Wayne state. It was amazing because the team that picked us hadn't said a word to us all competition!

Thank you for an amazing year Kyle. I can't wait to work along side you next year!

2002: Observed the team and the competition because my brother was on the team

2003: Same as 02

2006: Freshmen year of high school. Did various menial tasks but ran bumper group by the end of the year.

2007: Overhauled strategy system with another team member (Jay Walker(thats his real name)) and ran the strategy team in partnership with him.

2008: Ran strategy team with Jay. Created my patented Blay-frame which stopped the bot from tipping over on several occasions during competition. Coached two matches at nationals

2009: Ran strategy team on my own. Built many parts of the conveyance system and the hopper. Drove the robot.

2010: Freshman year at Stony Brook, mentored from afar with the use of aim, email, and phones. Made trips every weekend starting Thursday night(no Friday classes ftw) and returned to school Sunday night. Had a lot of involvement in strategy, possibly more than last year because i did not drive the robot or coach.
