Team member Nick Names
I'm sure all of you have experienced this. It is completely normal and very much part of the bonding process that takes place as a team forms: we develop nick names for each other.
What I would love to hear are some of those names. What I would also love to hear is the reason why that name was given, that always seems to make the name make more sense and that is where the bonding starts. These names can be for current or past members, Mentors or Advisers. In fact, anyone that is or has been connected to your team is fair game. Please remember before you respond, this is a GP place. Please use common sense when replying. I know there are names that just do not need to be shared, so please don't. OK, I'll start. We now have a student how will forever be known as "Quarter Inch". This is not because of his stature but is because he was the first to break a drill bit this year. It was a 1/4" bit. To be fair, one of my nick names is "Double Square". Why? Same reason as Quarter Inch, except, I broke a 9/64" bit. Engineering students = witty sense of humor. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Besides my obvious nickname of Dinsmoor, people call me "fearless leader" from time to time. For the past year I've been a team captain, and with that role comes with some responsibilities. When I normally have to do something, people usually refer to me as "fearless leader" when they are jokingly mocking me for the work I have to do as a leader. :) It's all in jest though.
Another nickname that we have on our team is "Battery Boy/Girl". Every year a student volunteers to be in charge of the batteries for the year (charging, fixing, and putting in the robot), and so they get the title "Battery Boy/Girl". Just a fun little thing we do on our team :D |
Re: Team member Nick Names
mine: Wildcat, Urkle i got "Urkle" cause i dressed up as a nerd @ my team's hallloween party, i had suspenders and everything :P
some of the other interesting ones on my team: Tick-Tack, Dr. Freshy-Fresh |
Re: Team member Nick Names
We typically have nicknames on the back of hoodies, chosen by the student of course.
My favorite this year is Dillons "Why yes, i did make a 6 wheel swerve drive" |
Re: Team member Nick Names
I've had a kind of changing nickname that changes over the years. My freshman year, it was freshman(for obvious reasons). that same year, I had to redo something I forgot about now but Ever since I've been refresh. The mentors tried to change it over the years by naming me tri-fresh during my junior year and quadra-fresh my senior year but they didn't stick. So I'm still refresh for as long as I live in robotics.
|
Re: Team member Nick Names
People on my team have been known to call me Foxy, Josh Foxy, Joshy Foxy, or Josh Fox.
Anything except just Josh  I'm ok with it :D |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Last year I got the name "Wing Leader". We made a stop during the bus ride to nationals at some wings place, and they had crowns with various puns on them. You can guess which one I grabbed :P

Re: Team member Nick Names
Ed SMASH -I break things( Not important things they don't touch those things things) I broke bent a drill in a drill while it was off, bent a pieice of alum in half like 3 times, almost cut a miterer in half, got a jigsaw blade broke in half and much more ^^

Re: Team member Nick Names
Sparky - He's now a mentor for wiring and programming.
Compressor Kate - We didn't have enough weight left for the compressor on the robot one year, so we built a compressor backpack (battery, pressure release valve, etc...) for the coach to charge the tanks before each match. I've always said the job of coach is 90% pack-mule. "What's his name" Harper? - Yeah, what was his name. Gimpy - Hurt her ankle, was on crutches all season. Junkie - I can't remember where this came from, but it isn't what you're thinking. Kerichelle - this was actually two students who did everything together so we gave them one name. Gumby, Dr. Gumby, Mr. Dr. Gumby (me) - that's a long (and boring) story. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
as my user nickname suggests, "Furher Glitterpaint" due to two parts... the first comes from being captain, while the second comes from a facetious comment i made one day involving making team t-shirts...
|
Re: Team member Nick Names
Last year, my nickname alternated from either "flippy", "tapeworm", or "freshman". "Flippy" because apparently my name was too hard to pronounce, "tapeworm" because i ate a lot and was said to have one, and "freshman" because i was the team's only freshman.
The first two still apply this year. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
We have several nick names for team members.
Mine is Cadman because I am the main CAD person for the team and I am the one who really started the CAD team to begin with. :] Another member is called Doughnut because a long time ago he accidentally quoted Doughnut from Red Vs Blue in class without ever seeing the show We also joke around with calling our main driver "The Welder" because he loves to weld stuff at the technical school he goes to. And then there is our mentor, Mr. Hildebrandt who we simply call "H" for obvious reasons. |

Re: Team member Nick Names
We have a girl on the team that is so weird and random that she is SPAZ. Someone else is Nitro cause you never know when she'll go off on you. Another girl is Clutz cause she kept falling down stairs at an off season event. One kid is Thumper cause he NEVER stops moving his leg. A brother and sister are Waage (the brother) and Waage^2 cause its their last name. I'm Strobelight because I have extreme bipolar symptoms that are fast like strobelights. My favorite is Muffin. We went to Waage's house before a meeting and two kids were playing Halo and Washito (someone who's last name is Washburn) was playing as default and the other kid was playing on a profile called Muffin :D

Re: Team member Nick Names
Our mentor, Phil Harris got the nickname of White Chocolate Phil Phlash. This is because a few years ago we put his name into a "Gangsta" name generator. The White Chocolate is cause of his race. The Phil is cause that is his name and the phlash just sounds cool.
|
Re: Team member Nick Names
Mr. Pockets: My universal forum name; originally made for a make-believe character I made up (one which I've never actually written a book around though). I just chose it for my team hoodie and such and for some reason people actually started calling me by the name. People seem to find it quirky or something.
Miss Masterlink: Nickname for our master of chains (she had it as her title on here for a little while) Welda boy/The little welder boy: One of our rookies who already possesses great skill welding. Milhouse: I'm not even sure. I guess some people just thought he looked like milhouse from the simpsons. Working on actually using his real name instead though. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Our first year, our team captain, a senior, accidentally used touched both terminals of the battery with a screwdriver earning the name Sparky.
I did the same thing a few days later, and got the name Sparky Junior since I was a freshman. Although not a nickname, my team now has a new way of measuring error: Ace--1/8th of an inch or less In honor of one of our freshmen this year, who consistently drilled holes that were an 1/8th of an inch away from where they were supposed to be. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Quote:
Very few people call Milhouse by his real name. He's even in my phone as Milhouse, and I've gone to school with him since elementary school. There are also a few other odd ones from our team... Newbie - He's a senior now, but he was the only rookie from his rookie year that was actually active on the team. Nobody who's younger than him really knows him as Newbie, but a lot of the alumni do. Millory - Well, her real name is Mallory. Her specialty from freshman year has been using our mill, and somebody made the connection one day. Kallory - What happens when someone tries to say "Kara and Mallory" too fast. Mallory and I are the team captains this year, so we're often referred to as a pair. In emails, we're often "K&M" Wrenchie - (I THINK this is how the story goes) Last year, one of our rookies was holding the doors open for someone carrying in donated items from GM. Someone had opened one of the boxes and pulled out a giant wrench, which, from quite a distance away in the dark, looked like a gun, so she flipped out a little bit. She was known as Wrenchie for the season (unfortunately, she's not with us any more due to a commitment to Tae Kwon Do) I don't really have a nickname any more. It used to be "Karibou," but after using it for three years, it's gotten old. I really wish I had one, though... |
Re: Team member Nick Names
There's another Chris on 2791 who is a senior design leader. It's cool to work with him since he knows a lot about what I don't (machining), and I know a tiny bit about the reverse. Regardless, this leads to a lot of confusion, so people call me "RPI Chris", "Chris is me", "Picone", etc.
I never really got a nickname on 1714, probably because I was the only Chris on the team. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
they call me Gorrilla, because I broke some stuff, specifically our last piece of 1" AL. square tube...
We were building the scissor lift for our 2008 robot. We had one 28" piece left that needed to be cut after I had cut the 7 other ones, I clamped it under the miter saw, pulled the handle to turn it on, and pushed down too fast because I wasn't really paying attention. The saw then proceeded to bend the tube into a nice U-shape. It dosent help that im 6'3 and 200 pounds either lol I dont mind it usually, but its kind of embarrasing when you break something and 12 people tell you to sit down for a banna-break. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
I am Canada on our team, largely because I'm pretty vocal about it :) ( I have a couple of Canada shirts I wear, plus, I let everyone hear it when Canada won the gold medal after losing to the US the previous Sunday... GO CROSBY!).
Sometimes I'm also called by my last name, Szechy, just because it's pretty cool. Our head mentor occasionally called me Cheese, because Szechy is pronounced SAY-chee which is an easy transition to Say Cheese. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
I'm "Grapie" because there are multiple Katie's, but it didn't really stick.
We have a Lobo (Laura) because I got lazy. :) We have Itchy, for no reason other than a senior needed to get his attention and just said names till he turned around, and Itchy worked. Yoda was a self-proclaimed name, but I met him as Yoda, so it stuck. J-hawk: One of our teachers has a long name that doesn't follow the rules of pronunciation, so we just call him Mr. J, J-Dog, J-Dizzzle, etc... J-Hawk is our favorite (often followed by a loud "PCAW" from someone in the vacinity) "The Twins" was given to two freshmen girls because they were almost always together at the beginning of the season (they don't look anything alike)(at all) And Slurpy, because as a Freshman, he had newly aquired a retainer and slurped.... ALL THE TIME. We take pride in the names we give. I also have nicknames for everyone: Janedawg (Janelle) Jackson-bear (Jackson) Kev-Bev (Kevin Kolo-J) SarSar (Sarah)(Which also stuck on the entire team) |
Re: Team member Nick Names
The Penguins of Madagascar are our mascots, so they call me "Skipper", the programmer is "Kolalski", the awkward freshmen is "Private" and our driver is "Rico"
|
Re: Team member Nick Names
People on the team many times call me KStarr (often written with a K and a star), seeing as my last name is Starr. I like that one a lot. Some people also call me mom...that I wouldn't mind changing.
As far as other nicknames: "Cruddy" Spin off his last name, McCrudden There was a period of time when we had two Phils, so I called one "Phil with the hair" "Carlos" I have no idea why we call him Carlos, his name is Nick, but we do. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Quote:
Last year our team captain came up with the idea to nick name the veterans on the team, they went something like this Sarah - Salt AJ - Oregano Abby - Ginger Joseph - Garlic Mary - Pepper My favorite was, Collin - Peprika "OK Peprika, what are you doing now?" Seasonings - because they were seasoned veterans. I think I will bring back that Peprika one |

Re: Team member Nick Names
Captain America is my nickname. I'm not sure why. A guy who's not our team started calling be that and it just stuck.
The Temptations-One of the guys on our team started randomly singing a version of "My Girl" during one of our meetings. We don't call him that regularly because it is kind of awkward to say in regular conversation. Rosie the Riveter-The nickname of one of the guys on our team who did most of the pop riveting. |

Re: Team member Nick Names
On my team one of our drivers nickname is "8 Dollars". lmao!
His nickname is that because he said if we go to Atlanta he wants to order a big pizza for himself with room service. We told him it was going to cost about 8 Dollars. He said ok and has saved the same $8. 6 one dollar bills and a 2 dollar bill. He brings it to all our comps. for motivation. lol |
Re: Team member Nick Names
One of our programmers missed the fact that the installation instructions for Wind River were clearly laid out in the readme file, complete with illustrations.
We're still calling him Screenshot. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
One of our members is Asian and he won't tell us how to pronounce his name
So we call him Haha. But it's not just us. The ENTIRE school calls him Haha. We do sometimes call him Giggles as well. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
There is one freshman programmer on our team (675) whose name is Charlie, and he has been called C-Dogg on a few occasions. I don't know why though, he's just been called that.

Re: Team member Nick Names
Most of the programmers have nick names.
The lead programmer is nicknamed "Crunchy" because he was eating a piece of celery when he was introduced to one of my year's leaders... |
Re: Team member Nick Names
In my 4 seasons on Team RUSH, we've also never failed to have 3 or more "Michael"s on the team.
This resulted in using last names a lot of the time, or all of them turning and saying "what?" whenever the name Michael was called out. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
My nickname in my team is Grandma or in Hebrew Savta, hence my name(My last name is Kenneth) . I've got this one as I used to have a beard that made me look old (Although ironically being a freshman I still looked older than everybody else in the team) so I was called grandpa, that one didn't stick though. When I finally shaved my friend decided I did a Sex change shave and since than the name grandma stuck with me. Now about half of my school calls me grandma... Gotta love my team

Re: Team member Nick Names
We usually call our programmer Code Monkey, a nickname he actually gave himself, but today when he was trying to reach into our practice bot and needed needle nosed plyers for something we changed it to Sausage Fingers LOL!
|
Re: Team member Nick Names
I'm just Palardy (my last name), as in "Palardy can fix it in code" or "Palardy is flashing the robot"
The greatest is "Frizzle" - His real name is Eric and he is an alumni (driver in 06), and he was known as "Frizzle" after driving several people to a building party at another teams shop, and they dubbed his van "the magic school bus" which led him to be "Ms. Frizzle", but then he became just plain "Frizzle" and his girlfriend is "Miss Frizzle". "Where's Frizzle? He's in the CAD room eating cream puffs again" One member of the Pit Crew is designated "battery babe" - Eduardo is battery babe this year. We call him that every time we ask about a changed battery. An alumni (Carolyn, '03) is known as "Mom" because she is often the one to ask us to clean up (and compares us to the 4 year olds she teaches at daycare). |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Our human player this year, his name is Daniel, but we call him Mombo..I dont really know why we do but it fits him, and everyone at his school calls him that...
And we have a running gag with one of our mentors, Dave, that he was the National GrabBag Champion 6 years in a row. Its hilarious when he asks for some tool and we head to the toolbox, then we hear "I got it" as he pulls it out of no-where. I'm starting to think he hides the tools in his pockets just to play a joke on us. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Team 1918 has 2 people with nicknames.
1. Evan, last year's human player, is called Evan Almighty. He made a lot of good shots for us. 2. Felipe, a current student, is called Tapeworm because he eats so much and stays so skinny. |

On our electronics team, we have 2 Alexs; one which is a mentor and one which is the student lead (me!). We are always working near each other since we are the real workhorses on our electronics team, so when someone needs our attention they normally just yell out "Alex Squared" to get our attention.
Another student on our team has gotten the nickname "Nice sweatshirt", because on numerous day of build we (myself and him) would both show up in the same AE hoodie. Now whenever we see each other I will usually say "Nice sweatshirt" even if he is wearing a t-shirt. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
We've got a short skinny guy on our team that was completely obsessed with the trident this year, so we call him "Poseidon."
I have to say he doesn't look the part at all. :) So far, we've nicknamed only the trident guy and the robot. Complete list of the robot's names: 1. Duncan's Folly (After a fellow freshmen who kept drawing on it and fooling with it) 2. The Tent (You'd know it when you saw it, we've got a huge plywood/aluminum tent on the top with huge stickers on it showing our (3) sponsors) 3. GLaDOS (Yes, it was still alive after me smashing it around in midfield) 4. Decker Ex Machina (Decker in the Machine, after our captain, whenever it had glitches, we said it had "Deckers.") Thaine |

Re: Team member Nick Names
we've got a guy on animation that we call Wolfie. I'm not entirely sure why, but it might just be some inside joke with the animation team or something like that that just spread out to the rest of the team. otherwise, we've got a few people we refer to by their last names, and then Max, who likes to be called Maximilian P. Malone the First.
the only other one I can think of besides those would be mine. people like to call me things along the lines of Stalker or Creeper, mostly because I'm the main camera dude and I'm always taking pictures of people, though some of the dumber comments I've made, usually trying to justify still dumber comments, haven't helped much either... |

We never used the kicker on our robot. Our driver decided he wanted to try it in Atlanta...he got a penalty.
He is now PK for penalty kicker. Doesn't hurt that he's a soccer player either. Or help, depending on the side of the argument. While not on my team, I call one of my friend's on 176 PBJ. I was talking to other 176 friends on the phone while they were in DC, and they told me about a kid on their team in their hotel room named "BDJ" Me and my wonderful hearing heard wrong, and it kind of suck with me XD |
Re: Team member Nick Names
I was given the nickname Duckie by our Pit Lord in 2002 because [as team co-captain/pit-crew member/pit & rca ambasador] I pretty much lived in the pit; and always had or knew exactly where the duck/duct tape was at all times. It was used quite a bit that year, but it's only grown since. My youth group started using it (and gave me the left over rubber ducks from a carnival we held), and then it ended up becoming my summer camp name when I started working at camps the next summer. I now own +300 rubber ducks [including the neat light-up one Koko Ed gave me in Atlanta! -thx Ed!-]as well as almost every duckie-themed item ever made... including a toilet seat cover and rug to paperclips, mardi gras beads, and loads of keychains.
I never really though much about how many people (excluding summer campers) only know me by Duckie; until I learned that some of the crew were trying to claim me ahead of time to scorekeep on their fields at Championships... but they didn't know my real name. I'll have to include it into my VIMS account next year. ------------------------------------ Team Nicknames: -"Action Joe" Perrotto: was always moving... so much so that it was rare to get a non-blurry picture of him before digital cameras became commonplace. Now it's only mostly-rare. -Battery Boy/Girl: have one every year -Father & Son Carlos... known as Carlo Sr./Jr. or Carlo/Carlo Lite. We've had loads more through the years, I do not know all/the true stories behind them all though. Including... Scrappy, Mooch, Vicious, Big-Foot, Papa John, Hacksaw, Coco, and Matt "Hazmat" Hazzard... Loads of jokes were had at his expense when traveling to events... especially through tunnels. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Uh...back in the day, we had five Michael's in the club. So we resorted to use their last names.

Well as my screen name says, I'm "Little Narnia." This happened when one of our senior members was working on a project with me and she couldn't remember my name. She stuttered saying "Na-Na-Na-Narnia! Get over here!" I burst out laughing! The little part had come into affect as soon as they found out I was the youngest on the team. Ever since then everyone including our mentors calls me Narnia. Even during build sessions & meetings to ease the tension, I'll get on one knee, with one arm up, and yell "FOR NARNIA!" So if you are to ever see a girl with a cape and crown on, yelling "FOR NARNIA!" That's me (:

This year's sweaters say "MADE IN CANADA" on the sleeve, so we all have something related to that on the back. So I'm Scale Model, and we also have Master Mold, Prototype, Biohazard, and Defect among other things :D
Also, we have a kid on our team who's birth name is Cory. When he joined the team as a niner last year, one of the guys couldn't remember his name and said, "Hey you...um...um...Owen" and it's just stuck. We all get Really confused whenever anyone calls him anything but Owen. Even his mom calls him Owen when she's impatient! |

Philip. To set the scene: it was build season 09, later on into the night, and I remained with some upperclassmen and some mentors. The seniors decided since I was a freshman, I needed a nickname. They asked for my middle name and I hinted that it started with a P to make them guess :p
Unfortunately this backfired when they asked one of the mentors on the team, my father Don, what my middle name was. Before I could save my poor soul from eternal nickname torture, my dad jokingly told them it was Philip. I tried telling them my real middle name is Pauline, but, cue groan and eye roll. |

I'm known as the Complication due to my knack for overcomplicating things. It's also a nod in the direction of my dislike for Jersey Shore.
There's Bean Dip for who knows what reason. The Mighty Ginge for our ginger programmer and his mighty programming ways. The Saxy Man because he's the sexiest sax player to ever walk the face of this Earth. The Secratariat goes towards our favorite secretary because it sounds like secretary. Yahtzee/Sprinkles because because. Dynamic Don goes towards our epic mentor's mentoring capabilities. Derail is Darrell's nickname because he can be. Duffel bag: J-Wags left his duffel bag in the school parking lot on the day we were leaving for the Wisconsin regional, his parents had to drive two and a half hours to bring it to him. Buster: I got this nickname because I jokingly threw a piece of delrin at someone, missed, and cracked a window. oops! |

The arbiter of No: he always says no.
Also, it's always JB's fault. Even if he isn't in the building. |

"The Science guy" To our VP, since he always includes science in his sentences
Mentor: "Drill a 1/4" hole out for me" Him: "I'll drill a science hole for you" "Droid" To our treasurer, since one of us proclaimed "First word that someone says becomes Bert's name" and one of the phones turns on and says "DROIDDD" Quote:

Re: Team member Nick Names
Sox-David-Programmer-Freshman year me and this other David both joined the team, and people would get annoyed every time someone asked for David and got two identical responses, so one day during a meeting someone randomly said "We can't do this any more. Davids, stand-up. Ok, you are Socks, cause that's the first thing I saw about you. And you are...Bud. Just cause." Luckily for me, Bud didn't stick.
Becky-Corey (Male)-Driver (Arm)-Long story about texting a freshman. If you go to nationals you can ask him yourself. Yoshi-Calvin-One day he claimed he could fit a whole apple into his mouth. And he did, ergo, Yoshi! Jose-Grig-Driver (Base)-My younger brother. When he first came, I claimed that was his name. So it is. Battery Nazi-Alice-Batteries-She was really strict about our robot batteries, and we thank her for it. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
My robotics nickname is Smurf. Our team's primary color is blue, which meant we use blue paint and spray paint a lot. Paint plus robotics kids usually means there will be a mess to clean up, but one time in particular I had an incident with a can of blue spray paint which left my arms and blue for about two weeks, which is how that nickname was born.

Re: Team member Nick Names
When I had a team, I was known as the "What if chick" because that's what I always said. I could spot the problems with a design or some part of the assembly but couldn't explain it very well. So I would say"what if ______ happens?" Lightbulbs would go on all over the shop...

Re: Team member Nick Names
Back on my old FRC Team was Lightwaves in the Colorado FRC Community cause the only explanation to how I was able to accomplish everything I accomplished, I had to be moving at the speed of light....also in Tech Theater I was the Light Chief since 9th grade till mid-12th and I got nicknamed Light Goddess and Lightwaves got derived from there.
Our Head Mentor gets referred to as "Master Splinter" by our students sometimes and one student called me "Red Leader", that was funny/interesting.... |
Re: Team member Nick Names
Our only freshman girl this year got the nickname Grasshopper. I don't exactly remember why, but I think it had something to do with one of our juniors trying to teach her something.
That same junior got the name Charzard (no idea how), the other junior got the name Velosoraptor (I am sure I messed up the spelling hahaha), and I have the name Taco. no idea why. haha My nickname was very random...since the three other girls had nicknames (the above names) the two juniors were trying to come up with a name for me. and Charzard came up with Taco. haha Another freshman really messed up his shoulder during wrestling about half way through Build...so, he got the names Gimp and One-Arm. Earlier that year he got the name Chains because he was really good at working with chains. plus it worked cuz his actual name is Gain. Since my freshman year, one of the other seniors (Mathew) has had the nickname Baby Thew, but only with certain people on our team. He was playing with the Coke trays and was stacking them up. So the 8th grader at the time called him Baby Thew. One of our mentors is very particular about the pit. like, everything has its spot and he makes sure the pit is clean all the time, especially at night. another mentor made the comment "He's like my grandmom was in the kitchen! everything had its place!" thus, MomMom Fordham was named. Tho I think I'm the only one that calls him that still...hahaha One of our mentors has the nickname Speeder....you get one guess why ahhaa Our team leader (mentor) has the nickname Empress...Whenever she walks in the door after traveling, you hear "Empress on Deck!" from every mentor hahaha I'm sure that as soon as I post this, I'll come up with more haha |

Re: Team member Nick Names
Oh yeah! I forgot, our programming team lead's nickname used to be "Padwon" when she first joined cause she was scary fast with all the training we have on the team and she zoomed right through everything and when the build season became over and her programming skills are just totally awesome, we call her "Jedi".

Re: Team member Nick Names
Since my last name is "French", the nickname Frenchie was obvious
|
Re: Team member Nick Names
Our team mentor will forever be reffered to as: Nelson. why? Because there is no good way to sum up Dr. Nelson aside from: Nelson.
For the kids, we do have some nicknames. I'm Trekkie, as i'm a star trek fan. there's MPP, which is a shortening of his name, and others. |
Re: Team member Nick Names

Re: Team member Nick Names
I don't have a nickname, though my mentors have called me "Too much".
We call one guy on our team Chewie, since he has so much hair one mistakes him for a Wookie in a Star Wars convention. He even does the perfect Chewbaca noise. |
Re: Team member Nick Names
An 8th grader mentioned Halo offhand. He is now, forever and always, the Halo Kid. He even nominated his own name for the robot name (but only got one vote.)
