Funny things to ask for on the PA system

-flux capacitor (classic FIRST prank)
-any number of items from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXW0bx_Ooq4
-Turbo Encabulator (engineering joke, also from the above video)
-sonic screwdriver (Doctor Who)
-nanites
-nanotubules
-buckyballs
-some [element] (try xenon, astitine, or anything that you could pass off as "just a material")
-an "LHC"
-a previous FIRST game piece
-a large "black bag"
-something in a different language

And if the announcer will let you...
-an easy button (you can actually buy these...)
-chloroform
-a very very large bucket

Any other ideas or things people have done? :)

or

We always enjoyed asking for things like a "left handed ratchet" or "left handed adjustable crescent wrench." Then they staffed the pit admin with people who actually knew tools, and we just got that "....really?" look every time we tried. :/

This isn't related to robotics but there is a computer and network administrator class at my high school with only a few kids in each hour. During each of these hours there is also a large class of students learning programming of different sorts and there is a single class for accounting. Every time there is a substitute teacher, one of the students in the first hour class asks the sub to remind my friends and I who show up later in the day to swap out the "Hydrogen Moleculizers" in all of the computers. When one of us is notified of this important task we all become extremely serious about getting it done. This has been going on all year and yet not a single substitute has noticed we were joking.

At SVR last year our programmers sent a member on a search for prop wash, we continued this tradition this year by sending 5-6 of our new members to a series of teams who would say something like "oh we just gave it to XXX, try them" it took them a good 10 minutes and 8 teams to find out what prop wash is

probably not intentional, but during west michigan district team 85 had a board game they were raffling away and during the finals the announcer said "XXX you've won the game!" And I could have sworn I heard a few moans across the who arena of people losing the game.

Haha, I was the one who told the announcer to ask, "Team 1758 would like to know where Waldo is!" at palmetto. Good to know somebody actually heard that.

One of our programmers, whose main role is actually to play starcraft, got this through: "1758 is looking for materials to construct additional pylons." We were gonna ask for a LHC or a water spanner and flux capacitor, but then matches got back underway and we were burning too many calories walking back and forth from the queuing area and the admin table.

My freshmen year in '06 at SVR, we (675) would get the announcers to say 254 needs a hug, or 254 needs a girlfriend, or 675 is cooler than 1700. We would also be asked "675 stop blowing bubbles in the pits." we like to pull pranks sometimes. ;) Flux capacitor is almost always heard. This year at SVR i didn't hear one prank for the first time i've been involved with FIRST

How about this: ask for some very odd, seemingly non-pit related things. Try for the "what in the world do they need THAT for?!?!" emotion :yikes:

-a fishing pole
-a 10x8 ft sheet of plywood
-a copy of Shakespeare's Hamlet ("It needs to be hardcover!")
-a 100 ft Ethernet cable
-10 or more rolls of scotch tape

This is a category that really could get big :D

Not exactly asked... but here goes.

I had just asked Pit Admin to help me find an inspector to inspect us. (Inspection had just lost their last one. :P ) Turns out there was one right next to me.

"That would be me"
"There is one. Will go inspect this guys robot. "

So has we are walking back the the pit the guy at pit admin comes over the inter com and says "Will!!! Go inspect the robot!"

Not to kill everyone's fun, but is this really something that's all well and good, tricking the Pit Admin? I mean, these are funny, but you're pranking a volunteer.

I know if anyone on 2791 pulls this, they'll get a stern talking to.

EricH 28-03-2010 02:48

Re: Funny things to ask for on the PA system

Chris, I think it's more about easing the stress in the pits. You know as well as I do that being in there can be pretty stressful for everyone involved. A joke announcement like one of these can ease that a bit, provided that it's made at the right time.

Also, often the pit announcers get the joke, and then pass it on to everyone else. It can get pretty monotonous sitting there all day doing nothing but announce "Teams X, Y, Z, A, B, C, you need to report to queueing immediately!" all day. Something like this, if you get the right type of announcer, can break that up for a little bit. Think of it not as pranking the pit announcers, but as enlisting their help in spreading a joke. They don't have to give it if they don't want to.

I completely agree. A funny pit announcement can help ease the stress of a long and tiring day. And ultimately, the announcer makes the call on whether or not to actually say your message.

Prop wash is actually the term for the turbulent eddies of air created as a propeller moves through it. Flying through heavy prop wash (turbulent air) can get bumpy or, if the prop was big enough (and you're close & small enough) downright dangerous - like 'flip that little Cessna over' dangerous.

Not exactly funny considering he's our main driver...

Other ones from the Wisconsin Regional are a wood welder, heartworm pills/a milk bone for a team's watchdog, and a metric, left-handed, flathead screwdriver.

Our captain reigns us in any time we get the idea to ask for silly things over the PA, but a few of our favourites have been:

Seems to me that this week, Thursday is going to be full of this sort of stuff, seeing as we're holding regionals ON April Fool's Day.

Yeah we sent one of our people at BMR to ask for an AC battery because an alum of our team was working pit admin.

At the Buckeye '08 Regional, I heard the PA announcer say, "Team XXX is in need of a new robot"...not a good sign!

Here is one that might get a lot of attention. "Team XXXX needs a Geiger counter. They think they have a leak.” :yikes:

How about something to repair our dilithium chambers while we're at it?
I'd mention unobtanium, but if somebody falls for that one...

I happened to like all the funny pit announcements simply because they're all funny and of course they're always announced at the right time. =). I always here the common Flux Capicator but I wouldn't mind hearing some new ones =). NYC and NJ I think was full of the funny annoucnements although I'm not too sure about SBPLI.

reference the movie Armageddon... and the computer geek...

I thought that was from The Core, but I haven't seen Armageddon, so I wouldn't know.

I would love to see someone ask for unobtainium, and be provided with a past-or-present FRC game piece that was at one time or another, deemed unobtainium.

Hilarious!

Anyway, at Philly this year a couple of the kids on my team got one of the freshmen to get spare parts to say "423 needs bocky" on the loudspeaker. In the high school from where most of my team hails (where is that? look it up yourself, it will be an adventure!), bocky is a slang term meaning...erm...you know, when a woman wants to do something special for a man...a more common vernacular is a compound noun, starting and ending with b...I don't have to spell it out for you, do I? A nod's as good as a wink, no?

Good times.

I hope everyone is using April Fool's Day wisely at any regional they might be attending (although the above story is 100% purely true).

It's a shame nobody can hear announcements in the pits at GWCC. I'd really like to see the reactions to "Team 45 would like to borrow JVN."

The funny part is that I use this to test how well the rookies on my team know their tools.

The sad part is, I think a few are still looking.

Well, today being April Fool's Day, we were expecting to get some pranks at our regional, but I didn't hear any. We'll certainly put some in tomorrow. I think we'll start off with a metric crescent wrench.

On at least two occasions I have borrowed one from Team 60. OK once was to show somebody and prove they do indeed exist. They can be Hard to find though. I'm still looking for one of my own. Just the thing for those pesky odd-size metric bolts:D

At Sacramento, our team thought that the 89 penalties our alliance received in one match was a joke.

Turns out we were penalized for each of the 89 seconds after our alliance's ball handler didn't return the ball through the trident :ahh:

We were fouled up! We asked for a metric crescent wrench and the lady knew what that was. We were shut down. The taste of defeat is bitter. :ahh: :)
want to ask for anything more, so if anyone else at North Star is reading this this weekend, please try something!

Someone at the Michigan Event asked a girl out to prom through the main field announcing system.

Which makes me think...

"A date to prom..."
