Dean Kamen on The Colbert Report (April 5th, 2010)

From Colbert's Facebook Fan Page:
Quote:

Inventor Dean Kamen and "Wire" creator David Simon bring, respectively, hope for and fear of the future to The Colbert Report next week. Don't miss it!
I got the date from Stephen's homepage: http://www.colbertnation.com/home

This should be interesting. While I don't know what Dean will talk about on the show, it's always a pretty cool deal to listen to him speak*. So if you receive Comedy Central, tune in this Monday at 11:30pm EST.

*Except during Kick-Off when the anticipation of seeing the game animation is unbearable. :D

It sounds like he's talking about FIRST... That'll be awesome.

You hope?

No need to hope. It is a sure thing. Dean Kamen will not miss an opportunity to talk about FIRST -- especially not when the Championship is less than two weeks away.

Yup, along with the slingshot.

Dean seems to drop in FIRST whenever he can, so I'm positive it will come up.

I love FIRST and I love Colbert. It's going to be an amazing show. The "Colbert Bump" will definitely help to raise awareness of everything FIRST stands for.

If I remember right this is Dean's 3rd time (once with the Ibot and the other with the device that turns anything into drinkable water...... including Nacho Cheese Doritos) on the Colbert Report and the other times he was on he talked about it. So Dean being well Dean he will bring it up while pulling of the 80s Jeans and Jean shirt fashion.

Re: Dean Kamen on The Colbert Report (April 5th, 2010)

I just saw Dean Kamen talk at the Umich just a week ago or so, FIRST is pretty much the clincher. Odds are if he can't talk about that, he will not talk at all (You can feel free to strikeout "Odds are").

For that speech, there was by my impression, since I don't go to the weekly talks that Kamen was selected for one of them, an unusually large crowd of students there that were not regulars.

Re: Dean Kamen on The Colbert Report (April 5th, 2010)

Dean spoke at a panel during the 50th Anniversary of Hawaiian Statehood.
Someone in the audience asked what his greatest invention was. He answered - FIRST - an organization that invents inventors.

Impossible. There wouldn't be enough time. He would need both Stewart and Colbert's complete airtime (commercial-free) to go over just the Seeding Points alone. Then there's Coopertition...

Re: Dean Kamen on The Colbert Report (April 5th, 2010)

Dean Kamen showed up at the North Carolina Regional on Saturday! It was allot of fun... but also at the end he was preaching the new Cree LED Lightbulb. This thing was bright as a searchlight! After seeing it myself I looked over to my fellow cheeseheads and they were all squinting and covering their eyes. This is a fine possibility for what he may be talking about. Last time he showed off a new invention... why not now? (Along with FIRST)

Haha, we watched that over and over in the car ride in slow motion! Of course our operator had it on the highest kicker level! We are just glad that after our drive team ventured over to him after the match that he was okay. No team wants to be known as the one who sent him to the hospital! :o

For those who are wondering in our second finals match we turned our robot to kick to the near zone and kicked too soon and hit Dean Kamen right in the face from 10 feet away. It was a very hard kick and no damage was done! :)

That was unfortunate but kind of funny. He, in the spirit of FIRST, shook hands with his attackers afterwards as they apologized. He was a great sport like we all should be. :D

Hulu apparently just publishes the links from Colbert Nation. And Colbert Nation takes approximately 1-3 business days to post their interviews/episodes.

Good Interview

I like how Colbert brought up FIRST instead of dean plugging it in.

also, Colbert asked if the GA dome would be full, and Dean silently dodged the question. Im hoping Dean can answer that question with a resounding "yes" in a few years.... that is if we continue to do this years Homework.

If we don't fill the dome this year, perhaps by the time we get back to Atlanta (2014?) the teams may be big enough to do it. Dean's homework notwithstanding, it's hard enough to get attendance at a 3-hour baseball game but impossible without beer. So 8 hours of mechanical mayhem without alcohol will be a real tough sell to non-relatives of the participants. Sorry, Dean, it will be easier to make those 150 pound machines fly than to fill the Georgia Dome. Unless of course someone dares to play the trump card - cheerleaders!

I don't think we'll be able to fill the Georgia dome in a few years... Perhaps the new venue in St. Louis, though :)

LOL! ;)

But I completely agree with you. It is very hard to fill an event that runs two days for hours. Expos are full with people coming in and checking out the event and then leaving. I even can't wait until the last match some days I'm tired and done watching robots.

It is a good idea and we can all definitely work on getting the stands fuller, but a full house might just be out of reach for a long long time.

if we could get them to come for the Einstein Finals.... I've seen the 100's and 200's fill up on the Einstein side. hopefully this year, we can get the 300's filled.... that is if Security lets us

That is mostly because everyone comes to see that though! But it is true that we could get a ton of people in there for the finals for a couple of hours!

You might have a chance at getting people in for Einstein finals if you can keep the award ceremony stuff from dragging the energy down. For those that haven't been there, the award ceremony is when all the speaking and FIRST messages happen.

That stuff is very good for the students that are involved but would just irritate uninvolved people that came to see robots play. Of the 2 hour Einstein finale there is maybe 20 minutes of actual robot play.

I really enjoyed the section of the show. Dean Kamen has once again come through with something truly incredible with this arm. I also gotta love the shout out to FIRST in there, but he didn't talk about it as much as I thought he would. Great segment. Hopefully FRC and other FIRST events continue to gain exposure, so that soon enough I won't have to be explaining to most people who ask that we don't build "Battle Bots" ;)

I am an engineer for Kaydon, a manufacturer of specialty "thin section" bearings. This morning I got a call from one of the engineers at DEKA. Apparently the Luke arm uses our bearings, and he wanted to spec out a modified version for the next generation of the arm. It is very gratifying to play even a small role in something as cool as this.

Many years ago I worked on some bearings for Dave Lavery's "other car".

Re: Dean Kamen on The Colbert Report (April 5th, 2010)

OK -- time to ask the obligatory engineering question! How the heck was he *controlling* that thing??? :-)

He had a series of objects strung across his back (one would think battery and cRio :-) ), but where are the fine motor control input devices? And for a double version of this arm, wow... How is the wearer to control that?

That, to me, was the neatest part of the interview! The "how the ... is he doing this" part!

qzrrbz 07-04-2010 22:29

Re: Dean Kamen on The Colbert Report (April 5th, 2010)

OK^2

After reviewing the tape again a few times, it is beautifully subtle. He has "something" in his real left hand. Reminds me of a ventriloquist a bit - the dummy/arm commands your attention, and his lips/fingers barely move while he talks/articulates the arm.

Beautiful.

But, I'm still wondering about control for a pair of these!

DonRotolo 07-04-2010 22:39

Re: Dean Kamen on The Colbert Report (April 5th, 2010)

From an article I read somewhere recently (I think IEEE Spectrum magazine) the control system uses the wearer's actual nerve impulses for control.

Amputees generally have "phantom limb syndrome", where they can still "feel" their missing limb. Doctors find the nerve endings , connect to them electrically, and have the wearer move their "limb" - "bend at the elbow a little. Now a lot", and so on. They map the electrical impulses they get from the nerves to arm functions...and the wearer controls the arm with the same thoughts/impulses as they used to with their real limb.

Makes me want to get into biomedical engineering. The problems in human interfacing, noise management and amplification are fascinating, the arm mechanicals themselves notwithstanding.

I had one class in Biomedical - it was interesting, but a 3-credit undergrad elective barely scratched the surface (and, it was 30 years ago...). Wish I had the finances to change careers. (Maybe in my spare time in the basement?)

This year's FLL challenge is entitled Body Forward. Undoubtedly related to the amazing device shown on colbear repore. If think that prosthetic machine is awesome and you'd like to delve into the topic some more, you should check in with a local FLL team and offer to mentor for the research aspect of this subject.

According to a 60 minutes piece on the arm, there are sensors in the shoe for controlling it, but it is a year old so I wouldn't be surprised if they got to nerve control by now
