Orville died in 1948, three months after the X-1 broke the sound barrier. Even before that, though, others had bounced around at speeds just below Mach 1 in fighter planes. That someone would break the sound barrier was just a question of when, not if (except for the minority that thought of the "sound barrier" as a real barrier).

Wilbur died in 1912 so you might be right about him, but there is no reason to think Orville -- a legitimate technology pioneer -- couldn't have foreseen supersonic air travel.
