Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
It is spring time in Atlanta, and that means you can expect very high pollen counts during the Championships this week. Today's pollen count (http://www.atlantaallergy.com/pollenCount.aspx) is 2942 particles per cubic meter. A count of 120 is considered Extremely High.
This means that if you are allergic to pollen, please bring any needed medications with you and plan on dealing with the results. Last week, the count was as high as 5733. Most of the pollen is grass and tree, with a lot of it being pine pollen. Pine pollen is usually large enough not to cause allergy problems, but it can still make your eyes scratchy, and eye drops may help. With no rain expected until Saturday, there is nothing to clean the pollen from the air. It's just something we have to live with. See you later this week, but come prepared. Dr. Bob |

Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
I'm here in my office in Ct with my eyes tearing from our own pollen counts. Dreading the pollen in Atlanta. Pine is one of my worst offenders.

Last week our count was 5700 before the rain hit. For serious sufferers, you may want to consider a facemask, as rain is not forecast at all.

Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
Thanks for the heads up. Time to start cycling the allergy meds for the season to get ready.

Would that be yellow snow? Or is it kinda greenish...
Sudafed to the rescue! |
Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
My sister told me when she drove to work last week her car was covered in pollen when a decent rainfall fell and washed all the pollen off her car. When she came out a few hours later her car was covered in pollen again.

Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
I used to live in Atlanta (well, Marietta, but Atlanta's close enough). The pollen's really bad, although, for some reason, my allergies are actually worse up here in the north... Guess it's the type of pollen?

Oh the joys of Northern GA in the spring. Last week I opened my window in the living room and put a fan in it to cool down my place. Two hours later my coffee table was covered in yellow pollen XD.

Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
As a beekeeper, high pollen counts just make me smile...
Thanks for the warning on principle, though! |
Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
Thanks Dr. Bob. It's been pretty bad here in PA as well. I hope it clears up a bit by the end of this week.

We're a local team, and at our school you can see all of the pollen on the ground, and make out footprints from where people have walked. So, yea, to all of you that have severe allergies, or might have them, come prepared! Rain isn't due until next Tuesday, so it could be gruesome. |
Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
We have been dealing with the same gift of pollen this year in Austin and it is true, the bees are very happy. It covers everything and is messy. I have a silver colored Explorer that has that light yellow green sheen to it and has had for several weeks. I would warn people against messing with it. If you don't know what your allergies are or are not prepared to deal with a sudden allergic reaction, you don't want to fool with this stuff by playing with it, writing in it, messing with it. Making angels is just asking for misery. I guess between my sinuses and knowing too many people who have been suffering - some severely - I would be very careful with it. It is also my suggestion to wipe your feet off very well as you enter buildings such as your hotel and not track it in.

Re: Pollen Allergy Warning for Atlanta
Fortunately (unfortunately???) I spent most of my time in Atlanta indoors. So the allergies didn't kick in until Friday - when I was scheduled to tape a video for the MIT Mentor Initiative of course! By then I barely had a voice left from yelling to people in the pits, breathing was laborious, and speaking of the two mentors, both now deceased, who meant the most to me brought me to tears. Undoubtedly it's an unusable tape. :o And I'm still suffering the effects of difficulty breathing. And I'm now back home, where I get to experience pollen for the next few weeks all over again!
