Champ Attendees

Just idling away the time until we leave tomorrow.
Here's where the 344 teams going to Championship hail from this year.

Why no Europeans?
FRC not hot in Europe?

Wow, 6 from Israel -- almost as many as from MD.

Thanks for the breakdown.

Nope. The closest you can get is the UK.

Good to see teams from even out of the country going! Even cooler to see 35 Michigan teams going!

But none of them seem to be coming to Atlanta this year.

Pity.
We have software engineering offices in Stockholm.
Some of Sweden's brightest computer geeks work there.
I've posted pictures and videos on our internal forums.
So far, no signs of interest coming back from them.

I would have been really surprised if there were NO teams in Germany.

The UK will be disappointed to hear that they are not in Europe

Re: Champ Attendees

There are a number of good FLL teams in Europe, especially in UK, Germany, Netherlands, Scandanavia. The cost of travelling to a competition probably limits the number of FRC teams. And, if they do compete and qualify for CMP, they probably can't afford another trip in terms of both time and money.

Always on the lookout for a humor opp, I passed on this one. :o
I think she meant that FRC is close to being hot in the UK and not even close in other European countries (or are they States now?). ;)

The folks I know from the UKoGBaNI would be just fine if Europe was to be just a little farther away.

Yeah, I was in Ireland last year just before their vote on the Lisbon treaty (the second vote, which passed; it failed the first vote) and it was a pretty hot issue.

The German teams are on US military facilities; so far no actual Germans.

I work for a German company and would love to see FRC propagate there.

We've had two "actual Germans" on the TechnoKats in recent years (exchange students).

Hey, 397 had a German citizen on the team this year! ;) Couldn't have competed without her, she wired a good chunk of the robot.

Re: Champ Attendees

We've only sent a dozen or so people off to Atlanta, but as long as we are talking about international teams, our club is a mini-UN. We were going through this just the other day: USA, Canada, Romania, Israel, Indonesia, Australia, India, China, Vietnam, and Ohio.

Yea, sorry about that FLL & FTC...
Perhaps you could post where those teams hail from?

And one of them just finished up 34 hours of work at AndyMark over the past 3 weeks to earn money for his trip to Atlanta. (Way to go Tobi!!!!!)

I would write a glowing recommendation for him any day. He was very very productive.

Re: Champ Attendees

We've also had various Germans working with us on 358 through our sponsor Festo. Usually they have been sent to the US to gain experience.
They typically spend some spare time bumming around the US sightseeing.

Team alumnus have keep up with each other and recently several decended on one of our past German mentors now living in Switzerland.

Europe (and the UK and Ireland) are represented by robotics teams in both FLL and FTC, as well as, India, Columbia, Chile, Peru, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Eqypt, Saudia Arabia, Haiti, Norway, Turkey, Thailand, Spain, South Korea, South Africa, Singapore, New Zealand, Jordan, Japan, more Australians, a regular smorgasbord of nationalities.

So that's:
  • 344 FRC
  • 100 FTC
  • 85 FLL
For a total of 529 robotics teams attending Championship.

I happily stand corrected. :)

It would be interesting to see the breakdown compared to the number of teams that went to Championships with the number of teams registered from each state or country.

Team 2468 had a great time in Galileo this past week.

This question got asked and answered in the Registration thread, but just for the FRC teams.

Thanks Mark. I did not see the thread. I had searched but had not used the right terms.

To be honest, I sometimes go looking for my own posts and can't find them with the CD search.

I think there was a korean foreign exchange student on 2771 code red, so does that count as a country being represented?

I assume that they'd count just as much as the German exchange students do.

It would be pretty awesome if all of the exchange students went back to start FIRST teams in their own countries.

The NC Gears had a German exchange student on the drive team all year. He did a great job and will take his enthusiasm home with him. He will be missed!

Until there is a regional competition in Europe, I don't see much chance of growth there. Until there are teams there, I don't see much chance of having a regional. Hmmm.
