What are your Team Traditions?

After 11 years, I am looking back at my time on Team 341 with a slightly nostalgic perspective. I was thinking the other day about Traditions. Traditions are a big part of what unifies a team. On 341 we have so many. Some of them are meaningful and some are just silly, but they all have stuck with us over the years. I think they are all important. Here are some of our traditions :

1- All of our seniors sign the shipping crate after their last competition as a student
2- For every competition we buy a nice Garden Gnome. If we do well, he lives. If we do poorly, he is sacrificed in a very ungracious and unprofessional manner.
3- Students are allowed to interrupt my meetings to tell me its 3:41 PM. (This one is really annoying.)
4- We give each new member a gear necklace at the end of their rookie year, to signify that they have earned their wings.
5- Every December 6th or 7th we have a team building night to celebrate the 341st day of the year.
6- If we win a blue banner, a coach has to wear our Daisy Pot Outfit
7- At the team banquet we have a memory box. Each senior leaves something behind that will “help” the students they are leaving behind. Usually its something that says something about the student (a favorite pair of safety glasses, a technical manual, used rolls of electrical tape, daisy band-aids…)
8- When you lift the robot together, you never count off 1-2-3. Its always "3-4-1"

That is all I can think of for now. So what are your traditions?

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

We don't have that many, but here is what I can remember:

1. Always kiss the lucky penny before a match. (we forgot one time, and our battery fell out!)

2. Always blame the programmer. (me...)

3. First Saturday of build season is hot wing day.

We place BOB rags on other team members' backs xD

Also we look at the clock in the library mini conference room every time when we meet in the library to see what time it shows (once it was 3:6 another was 3:98)

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Team 418, LASA Robotics (aka Purple Haze), has two enduring traditions.

We consider Lone Star our "home regional" so no matter where else we go, on the Friday evening at the LSR competition (between the general meeting and the scouting meeting) we bring in the sparkling grape juice and raise a toast to the departing seniors. Each senior gets his/her chance to speak then coaches and mentors are given 5 minutes for rebuttals.

The second tradition we have is that after school lets out for the summer we have what has come to be known as "The Gathering". It is a pot luck BBQ in which everyone that has ever been a part of the team (student, parent, mentor, coach, sponsor) is invited to come and play. We eat, drink, play games, tell war stories, eat, catch up, drink and have lots of fun.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

We're not a very old team, so many of ours are only 2 or 3 years old. Hopefully we'll continue some of the things we started this year, including:

Face Paint/ Tattoo art at competition
Crazy awards at our pool party (I've won "Most Likely to be able to find something in the lab", "Best Lego Mentor" and "Best Team Tattoo Artist")
Hair Dying Parties
Hat-decorating parties
Giving offerings to the little blue men that live in our lab and make parts vanish
Giving people little plastic Wall-Es on their birthday
Walking through the streets of ATL singing songs from Mulan
MARTA-surfing

Drink = lemonade, tea, and sodas.

Another tradition is that on the first night of travel, we will often go to see a movie as a team. It's a lot of fun to have fun together as a team. Really fun.

Needless to say, I have spent a small fortune on garden gnomes (I now buy them in bulk to get the volume discount).

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Our team has some interesting traditions. One of the newer ones is the "Do a barrel roll!" tradition, which started in 2008. At the Great Lakes Regional, we had made it to the finals as the underdog #7 alliance of 67, 326, and 503. Being a sophomore on the team, I had never experienced a regional win, and we were all pretty excited. We ran down as a team from the stands to as close to the field as we could to watch the final matches. We won the first match, then lost the second. But we decided that for the third match, we would yell "BLUE ALLIANCE, DO A BARREL ROLL!" during the autonomous mode. We ended up winning the match.

The next year, this became our lucky cheer. We would only use it during the match immediately following a loss in the eliminations. The outcome of every single match where we have yelled "RED/BLUE ALLIANCE, DO A BARREL ROLL!" has been a win for our alliance.

Barrel Roll matches:
2008 GLR Finals Match 3 - Win
2008 Curie Semis Match 2 - Win
2009 Troy Semis Match 2 - Win
2009 MSC Semis Match 2 - Win
2010 Kettering Finals Match 2 - Win
2010 Wayne State Finals Match 2 - Win
2010 MSC Finals Match 3 - Win
2010 Newton Finals Match 3 - Win
2010 Einstein Semis Match 3 - Win

Incidentally we used the cheer in 2008 for the Curie semifinals, but forgot to use it in the finals on Einstein.

I doubt our luck with this cheer will continue that far into the future, but I love doing this cheer, and it gets everyone really hyped up for the match when we spread around that we're going to do the cheer. It's really exciting, and really loud. I think you can hear it in one of the recorded movies of the Wayne State finals this year.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Coke and Mountain Dew fuel our team. All the alumni come back and get some coke from our mentor who keeps a stash with him at all times.

seniors get a special shirt made by some of our girls at the end of the season.

end of the season party with 4 awards for team members.

last 3 days of build are "work till you drop days" usually included is pizza, home-made pasta, or some other yummy food and we end up staying until like 2 AM finishing the robot.

We always dub one rookie the "CR" or competent rookie, basically the one that has enough sense not to screw anything up too badly.

Any problems? Blame electrical lead first.

11/5 or 11/5 is MVRT Day, all members are required to wear their T-shirts.

On weekends, members must come before 1:15 to get snacks at the end of the day.

Thing2_1723 22-04-2010 22:40

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

1. Before meetings and everyday of build season, we walk or drive to 7-11 right across the street from the school we do our build at. Usually people get double-gulp Mountain Dew, slushies, or Monster.
2. We blow steam and stress off by playing soccer or hacky-sack in the hallways until a janitor comes and yells at us.
3. Saturdays during build involves 10 people per car to go to McDonald's.
4. Everyone participates in the TWSS color game
5. At our "banquet" BBQ that is held at the local spray park, one member must be thrown into the water against their will
6. If someone is wearing flip-flops or mandles, their shoes are stolen and hidden.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

While we don't have alot of history here, there are a few things I can say are now "traditions"
1. Wearing a silver cowboy hat to either a school dance or the largest mixer our school does: MORP (reverse prom)
2. The after kickoff basketball game
3. This is the first year we have done this, but I want it to become a tradition: Host a kickoff party with the other schools from our district and invite as many people as you can to the kickoff.
4. Another new one for us: the pizza counter, we crossed over 100 pizzas since build day one, this last week in Atlanta.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

We always enjoy the bus rides to our "distant" competitions (NJ is our home regional that we go to every year, the others have been palmetto, buckeye, GTR, palmetto again, and virginia) - movies, HW, sleeping, and the occasional dance party ;).

We also do an end-of-the-year picnic, where we give out some awards for notable things that happened over the year - we try to give every senior one but also to some underclassmen.

Every Wednesday night is Davey's night - the head chef at a local restaurant (up the road from our high school) is a team parent and they've been providing dinner for us for a few years now. EVERYONE stays for dinner on Davey's nights :D.

I'll try to think of more to post...

Karibou 22-04-2010 23:02

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

-Mentors eat first. This is to make sure that they actually come out of the shop to eat, and that the student's don't eat all of the food before the mentors decide to venture out.

-Freshman year, I asked a junior if he wanted my meat, referring to the meat off of the sub that I had grabbed for dinner (I'm a vegetarian). Of course, high school guys will be high school guys, and I still always get teased for it and it's innuendos. It always comes up during dinner at build season.

-If the robot gets dented, it gets a band-aid put on it. The only reason this year's robot doesn't have one on it is because we can't add as many as we need to while still making the weight limit for offseasons :P

-If it's not black and yellow or some other team's swag, you're not wearing it at competitions. It's more of a team rule, but it's kind of a tradition.

-Our build mentors always seem to have an addiction to Diet Coke. All of them. We like to hide the bottles, sometimes, to see if they notice.

-The team goes out to dinner one night after each competition. Whether it's Friday or Saturday night depends on the event (if we're travelling, it's Friday, if it's a "home" event, we go out on Saturday)

-If anyone's birthday falls on competitions, they get a cake. With yellow on it somewhere (last year, we put yellow flowers on the cake, this year was just yellow frosting).

-It happened for the first time this year, but I have the feeling that our rendition of "99 Bottles of Dew" from Traverse City will become a longstanding tradition [:

"End of the year" picnic:
-Captains give out certificates to team members (paper plate awards without using paper plates!)
-Next year's captains are officially announced, as well as the next year's group leaders.
-Tackle tag is played. ALWAYS. It's like tag, but you're not "it" until the current "it" touches your shoulders to the ground. Also, you don't wear shoes.
-Any girltalk occurs in the ladies bathroom in the building we've had our parties in for the past few years. It doesn't happen out in the open.
-It's not a tradition yet, but it will become one: throwing a tampon at a freshman (it's a LONG story).

I know we have a lot more, but I don't remember what they are D:

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Our team has some pretty odd ones...

- Before every match when teams are introduced, the driver and operator must chest bump. This is because at roboprom in 2009, our senior driver and a member of 1124 tried to chest bump during a song. Our senior was about 2 feet taller than her, and as they went up for the bump, she fell backwards, landed flat on her back, with him falling on top of her.

- At least one night during our away regionals, our team has "Monster Pong" in one of our hotel rooms. 48 cans of Monster are brought, and teams of 2 compete against eachother in a variation of the game "Beer Pong". As far as I know, we have yet to finish all 48 cans in one night.

- In Atlanta, it was a tradition that each of us would order a Chick-Fil-A milkshake for breakfast each day at the CNN Center.

- On our way to each competition, some of our members always try to sing "Aces High" by Iron Maiden to get the team pumped up. Unforetunately, this one never caught on, as most of the people on our team have never even heard our theme song, or Iron Maiden

- Each year, our team has a yearbook, given to mentors and sponsors of the team. We have articles and pictures detailing our competitions and events throughout the year. It is customary for whichever person is late for the bus to each respective competition to be forced to write the article for that competition.

-Always visit the CheeseCake Factory while down in Atlanta... :D YUM!

Those are some pretty nice traditions though. I really like the one about giving your Freshmen gears. I highly doubt tadpoles like gears though....We will just have to wait and see I guess!

Oh, and Congrats on winning Chairmans this year guys!

-OH DONT FORGET! 5.03 (May 3rd) is National Frog Force saves Frogs day!!! YOU BETTER BE SAVING THOSE FROGS!!!!

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

at 1747 we:

-keep track of how many points each member racks up for finding lost stuff. the scoreboard is on the back of our toolbox.

-play dodgeball with '06 balls when we need a break

- allow every senior to take one item from the build room when they graduate... no robots or other vital/expensive items.

we have an end of the year party... everybody gets an award, and someone busts out the grill.

-Someone has to wear a tube-skirt
-Making the rookies drink Beverly (its DELICIOUS!)
-Drive team makes UPS with their arms (think Cheerleaders) before every match
-Donuts every saturday morning
-Softball once a week during summer (second year in the running)
-Someone on our team is always allergic to something weird/hard to cater to.
-Someone on the team has a weird nickname (Itchy, Slurpy, Lobo)
-Its the programmer's fault

Most of those are just team quirks though....

Oh that is CRUEL :P

Well, our team has a strange set of traditions, to say it lightly. The one that jumps out the most is our ice/water wars. Normally in our hotel every year, members of our team will plan wars against other members involving ice buckets, water, and sometimes Swedish Fish. It's actually pretty fun.

On that note, we don't travel ANYWHERE without Swedish Fish.

In the past the team would always wear our UberBots polos on travel days (Wednesday before Atlanta, etc.), but this year is the year that the last students to get them are graduating, so that might change.

Our programmer, Taylor, will get searched in the airport. It's as predictable as 177 making it onto Einstein.

After the fact that someone bought me coffee before flying to Atlanta my freshman year, anytime anyone sees me drinking anything that looks at all caffeinated, it's confiscated. Caffeine and I don't mix well...

These are only the few I remember off the top of my head, there's defiantly a lot more.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

I don't know if they are really "traditions" but some habits we have:

This year me and the other driver did a secret hand shake before every match with our driver coach, then we would finish it off with just each other.

Making a "DeWalt" joke whenever we can.

Referring to our Mechanical Engineering mentor as an "accountant."

We are a young team, so we just barely have a foundation. As I said before these are just some habits.

:D

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

We always have a "sick art" contest on the way to Atlanta. We bring bags of crayons and pencils, and everyone makes a puppet from the sick bag in their seats. We tape them to the overhead bins and the flight attendants judge them and award prizes to the winners (usually extra snacks). The flight attendants love it.

We have tried doing the cha-cha slide on the airplane, but that went away very quickly - it seems that the pilots don't like all the movement in the plane.

P.S. You have to picture how MOE travels. Besides the 30 some students, we have mentors and family members all on the same plane. All wearing MOE shirts.

We always try to encourage "Throwback Thursday" wearing the older tee-shirts from your collection to the competition on Thursday.

A newer tradition has been to have the Thursday pit "To Do list" printed onto a tee shirt and worn around the pit by the newest pit crew member so we don't lose the list.

Team pot luck and slide show to end the season, including the mentors getting awards that make fun of us from the students.

Time lapsing build days when we think a significant portion of the robot will go together for posterity (Some of these are on our site or youtube).

-We blame all of our problems on a select group of kids who graduated years ago and were notorious for making things break by touching them.
-We prank call a person at every competition doing a funny voice that a lot of members on the team can do (she still can't figure out who it is).
-We write G and O on our left hand's ring and middle fingers respectively and we write STUY on our right hand.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Insofar as Team 93's traditions...

-Nearly every match, someone shouts out, "WHO ARE WE?" , only to be answered by every who is ready, "93!"

-At least one rookie each year (at least for the past few years) is asked to find a mysterious "aluminum magnet". I happened to be a rookie last year, and was asked. I figured it out after looking for awhile...

-The team always has a Team Banquet, where all the seniors, mentors, and parents get recognition, we have a video recap, hand out gifts and stuff to the seniors since we won't be seeing them much for awhile (we have a policy where seniors cannot return to the team until after college), and eat!

-At competitions, the driver team dyed their hair red (this year at least ;) ).

-Also at competions, someone can always be found in an apple core... (read the team name to get why)

-Using the balls from '06, when the team is in need of a stress reliever at 11 P.M. after working all day, we play trenchball (dodgeball with a twist).

There are probably some more that I can't think of right now...

It seems like our team is going to continue this which is going to laser tag at every one of our away regionals. Every away regional(2) we've gone to we went to some sort or laser tag arena which is always a blast. Another tradition is an end of the year social which we give out awards, give the seniors presents, have lots of food, music, games, and at the end give one deserving senior a BAE scholarship for engineering.

We started instituting pledging for our freshmen members. There are bot group activities that are nearly impossible to complete as well as individual assignments each kids gets.
For instance 1 kid had to take a picture with a girl from each team in Newton. Another was a kid who had a new daily mission.
They enjoyed the process and it helped the kids grow together. It was a great team building experiment with them. We are going to continue it next year as well.

Traditions...

-"NERD ALERT" as our robot goes onto the field
-If it's lost, it's probably in Dave's pocket (lead mechanical mentor)
-I've somehow been deemed the team good luck charm. We lose comms whenever I don't point out to Dave that I'm watching.
-After each day of competition, we have very, very long "Pluses and Deltas" team meetings.
-Our team has always had at least one Spaz (currently 3: Spaz, SpazDad, and SpazGirl)
-Does Scouting count? We always have at least 7 people scouting at competitions.
-Banquet at the end of the year, complete with fun awards (and by this I mean ridiculous awards)
-We always try to do Team-building things with other teams at competitions (i.e. JSA last year with team 27, some things this year at Nationals) (PM if you wanna participate?)
-Blame the freshmen. Then fix it.

This is a really fun thread! It's cool to find out about all of the other traditions teams have. I actually have never thought about some of the things my team does as traditions, but I guess as our team ages some traditions and great memories have arisen. It will be interesting to find out what else will be born in years to come.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

From 145 this one could cause us to lose almost a hour on a Saturday.

Something doesn't work on the robot so the Controls (Programming/wiring) team and Shop team end up bickering over who messed up, get bored of bickering so we all blame it on the PR (NEMO) team. Come to find out it was controls the whole time.

Donuts on Saturday, no one worked till we got them. Then that brought the contest to see who could eat the most in one meeting. Last time I knew I was 13

The many random stuff that happens a lot:
Looking at drawing board trying to figure something out then randomly a mentor says "Have another donut"

Having a serious conversation with a lot of math and numbers, the same mentor from above would wonder off and go "Shiny thing" and play with something.

I'm currently working on a secret project that I can't discuss at the moment, as the subject in question is also a user and may get curious as to what I keep posting about :)

As a hint, it involves Black&Decker tools.

I'm not going to say any more at this time.
Check back in a couple weeks to find out.

By the way, it's not a prank, for those of you who were inevitably wondering.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Ok, well, we have a couple and many are just so normal to me I'm sure I'm missing some, but here is what we have:
(These are since the "New Spikes Age" started, which was our second year, seeing as we were re-rookiefied, our school didn't let former members of the team back on for some reason, except for one which continued coming even though he was told not to)

- Every year we take a marker and put a dot on the robot in a mini-ceremony. It's called the lucky dot, and the dotter has to be a certified dotter. This stems from a class tradition in my class in 10th grade, when we'd have a girl called Chen run around the class before tests and dot everyone's hand for luck. So far the only certified dotter is Chen, and she is leaving this year, so we need to start a certification proccess....

- The person leading our morales always comes to the competition wearing wings.

- The person leading our morales is always short and noisy (this includes the year before the "New Spikes" too)

- We have an ending ceremony every year, but so far it doesn't really have anything interesting

- On the last Friday before ship-date, our mentors buy us Chinese food.

- I don't think this is considered a tradition, but it kinda fits here too:
Every year our school shuts us down. Our school's administration decides we aren't worth the effort. Then after 2 months of lobbying they find us an impossible condition for keeping the team alive, thinking we won't be able to do it, and thus getting us off their backs. Every year, so far, we have managed. Then they decide that they still don't want the team, and then we get one of the sponsors to buy the KoP and registration without the school's approval, so that the school can't say no.
It's a game we have been playing with our school's administration for the past 4 years: at first it was only if you manage to get a major financial sponsor. Then it was only if you manage to get a technical sponsor with fabrication abilities. Now it's somehow we have to find a robotics teacher that will teach robotics in their school, but he can't be a former team member and WE have to pay his salary from OUR budget.... but, we've never failed so far....

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

our team is very young, so we have very few traditions.

1. when you guys have the kick-off in the US, it's about 6pm here, every year we get in someone's house and watch the kick-off together and eat XD

2. scouting dies as we reach our game, nothing else matter except of cheering our team, it's the adults responsibility now XD

3. a new tradition from the championship (that i hope will stick) is to gather the all team and yell "EMEK HEFER" as loud as we can!

4.a "children pile" is a must, at least once a day!

almost forgot:

5. mechanics is always perfect, every problem we have is caused by our programming team!

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

* We have hand prints or names of our seniors on our shipping crate.

* Custom made awards for our seniors:

I do seem to remember a time or two when the robot was not hugged, and losing the match...

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

not really a tradition, but still funny;

we have a lot of students who will come through the lab and leave their bookbags, then go somewhere else unrelated to robotics and the team. so if this person happens to be an important figure on the team (ahhem, our president) we drop a 5 or 10 pound weight in their bookbag

Thanks for sharing, everyone. Lots of really cool ideas and awesome stories in this thread!

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

103 has a few good traditions,
We have an wrap- up party at the end of each school year for all the students and mentors.
We Take Zeus, our Cy-"BEAR"-sonics mascot to every competition.
While at the Florida Regional, the whole team goes on a few rides together.
We eat dinner every night together during the build season.
....
I'm sure that there are a few more that i can't think of right now!
But all those others you all participate in are cool! :)

I can answer that. The Gnome is for the Robot (Miss Daisy) and Pit. So if there is any problem with the maintenance / electrical and of course, the biggest problem is the programing(er) The Gnome tends to get hurt. We also have a mentor that does not like gnomes and tends to attack it, at a drop of a hat. BTW, it is not me.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

1. There is no work on the Robot on Sunday. Period. This is enforced by our Coach's wife, who wants her husband back once a week.

2. The robot (so far) is named in recognition of a member of the team who has contributed far beyond the call of duty. (Romar for Enmar, and Michelangelo for Mike)

3. An gift of undiscussable nature is thrust upon a team member or mentor late at night the first competition night of our first regional, to be discovered the next morning.

Our team is still really new, so I'm sure we'll make more later. ^^

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Every to do list ends with "attach anti-mater dark-energy EMP nano-bot accelerator gun".

We never manage to get to the end of any list though.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

We only have a few-

1. The advance crew in Atlanta has to eat their Wheaties before each day of competition.

2. The driver always gets picked up by the systems operators before each match in what has become known as "The Lift." (BTW nowhere as cool as 1124's Superman, which we did with them at WPI. If you don't know, they have red capes, and the driver leans down and pretends to fly with his arms sticking straight out, and the systems operator shake the driver's cape to simulate it flapping in the wind.)

3. We play the game Pneumatic tubing at competitions. (Its the game spoons, but we play with pieces of pneumatic tubing because its all we have around.)

That's Friday for us :D

Our team has a pep rally every year before our "home" regional (Hartford). The community is invited to see the new robot, learn about the team, and eat free ice cream. It's AWESOME.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

I forgot one!
We have a team hand game (like patty-cake) and a running high score (its hard to explain, but its based on how far you get).

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Lets se;

1. Movie Night before kick-off

2. During our Friday Night Work, we always have Slushy, we usually also have our weekly team meeting to get everyone on the team on the same page.

Thats about it, i'll post more if I think off them.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

one of the elegid ones on my team is when the drive base for the robot is operational, someone must be dragged around by it. i got to partake in this this past year, was fun

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

As we are a rookie team, we don't have any annual traditions yet, although there are a few terms we like to throw around.
"No crumbs in the cRIO" was our mantra toward the beginning of the build season and has continued ever since.
Any highly competent freshman or grade 9 is instantly dubbed a "Luke".
Any action both breaking something and not serving a purpose has been re-termed "sticking velcro", after a grade 9 with a tendancy to break things, and sticking velcro to our drivers station while we were trying to queue.
After a long day following traveling and repairs on the Wednesday of the championship, I was commenting on a grade 9's competence which came out as "complicence". it's stuck ever since. In addition, a comment during dinner on wednesday spawned the team compliment: " Thank you for your complicence...burgers come in pairs!"

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

This is one mostly started by me, but I think it may stick. As you all know, robotics kids get a tad bit hungry. Some of the students are always first in line (myself being one), who also eats fast. Nobody is allowed to take seconds until everyone has eaten or said they won't have some. After I and a couple others finish eating, we storm through the shop making sure everyone has eaten. If they haven't, we badger them (to the point of us being yelled at) to make them eat.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

1. Our team puts hello kitty stickers somewhere on the robot every year.
2. Chipotle happens at least twice during build season.
3. We always try to build a t-shirt cannon. (this year we actually did... but it blew up.. twice. PM me for details. haha)
4. we have a system for naming bots like naming hurricanes. Every other year, the robot is a girl's name. year one: CRAP (Cougar robotics automated Project). year Two: Sasha. Year 3: Mac (In honor of a teacher who passed away over the summer). Year Four: Helga. This year, we haven't decided. We need to get a feel for the robot's personality. :)
5: There is an unspoken competition to see who can get all 61 buttons at our regional first.
6: KISS. (Keep it Simple, stupid!)
aaaand lastly,
7: We use a classic red wagon to transport the bot. (That senior graduated tho, so I am now making a custom spray painted ACTUAL cart for the robot with our team's logo graphiti style. ;)

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

We have many here on team 461 so I'll just list a few...
1 One time a former student saw a pallet of peep bunnies and said 'bunnies' in a very high pitched voice, now students try to inject it into many conversations
2 If anything on the robot is not securely fastened and moves it is 'jiggle billy'
3 After kick-off there is an unnofficial official team brainstorm session @taco bell
4 The drive team bleaches their hair
5 Celebratory Pizza Hut if we win something big
6 NRBA (National Ripstick Basketball Association(Thats right, we play basketball on ripsticks))
7 and the last thing I will mention though there are others I would really appreciate it if you quote this to say if you have seen it at competition but we have a 8 1/2x11 foot Happy Cat poster that we bring to competitions to put up near the pits.
8 I nearly forgot to mention our stylish team hats

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

Whenever something goes wrong on the robot, no matter who's fault it is, build team blames the programmers, and programmers blame the build team.

Kiss your favorite part of the robot before it ships( or bag this year)

before i came on the team i heard of saran wrapping freshman, because we would saran wrap a bot before we shipped it.

Also a lot of the seniors would work on the bot during lunch, and would stick the lunch trays in the ceiling, forcing the school to buy like 300 more, haha, then they found them all afterward

We also shipped bots not bag and tag them...

A few of us, like drive team tailgate for lunch in the parking deck, during the regional

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

-All students present at ship get to sign the inside of the crate
-The crate get's a new, themed paint job every year
-New themed pins get made every year
-There's always a tool left on the robot, usually serving a functional purpose
-We eat lunch as a team at the regionals, and almost always end up with other teams there.
-The drive team does push-ups for every penalty they get during a match
-If we make the elimination matches the whole team get's orange and green hair paint
-If the robot makes it to Einstein the drive team get's to shave the drive coaches head...this has only happened once so far, and i'm the drive coach this year
-Win or lose, we always Oink Oink Boom

and of course before every match, as many people as possible have to kiss Wilbur

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

We have awesome Halo LAN parties at the hotels after competitions, one year we took the TVs from 4 of our rooms and put them into one for 8 vs. 8. It went all night and was pretty awesome. We also try to watch as many insane Japanese movies as we can. Team favorite is "Battle Royale". You should look it up.

kgzak 02-02-2011 23:55

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

-we always put an extra victor on the electronics board
-me and another student never get to eat at competition (the one time we did we got in trouble :yikes: )
-we go to a local restaurant after our last regional.

there is probably more that I am forgetting.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

No cutting metal until the start of week 4 (we are a student led team and mentors put in very little say about the robot. It's always about what the students want which is why this tradition always ends up happening. Good luck trying to get a bunch of high school students to agree on things in a timely manner)

The robot always has SARBEZ in it. This is a tribute to the school at which the team was founded which happens to have the Zebra as a mascot.

Everyone signs the robot on the first day of the first compition. The more years you've put in, the higher up the list you are to sign the robot.

We always have a "crating" dinner to celebrate the completion of another robot.

After our last competition, we always have an end of the season debriefing dinner at old country buffet.

Every summer we have a team picnic to bid farewell to outgoing seniors and to welcome incoming freshmen.

Re: What are your Team Traditions?

BOB rags is the tradition I most clearly remember. Spending days during Competition Season just pressed rags then plopping them onto fellow team-members' backs in the stands. Good fun until people start throwing them. Then it gets messy.
