Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

I am usually someone that has trouble admitting that they have a big job to do but $@*! thats a lot to go through. Theres already more than 40 waiver requests in without considering the teams James dropped. I am still able to do it but I want to throw out some ideas for simplifying it.

Maybe when a player is dropped their teams go on waiver for 24/48 hours and not the regular until Sunday deal.

Another idea is we go back to the mad rush at a prescribed time. i.e. John's teams may be picked up starting at 7 pm Tuesday.

What is your input?

Edit: Please don't not send in a request because of this post. I still want people to be able to get the teams they want.

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

Hopefully nobody else drops out; I don't think anybody will at this point. I think that's what triggered the mass avalanche.

A shortened player drop/boot period is probably a good idea; maybe have an extra day or two in the week where drop/boot waivers are processed (say, Wednesday or Tuesday/Friday). All other waivers would be processed as normal.

The mad rush is just too crazy to have any control on. I guarantee you I know what would happen in Pittsburgh 2 if we did that: Everybody in that tier would be waiting for the time to roll around and then whoever had the itchy trigger finger would win. But whoever's dealing with the fallout would have to sort through the 5 posts with the same timestamp.

It might also work to start the processing early, but not announce it. A preliminary sort of who's likely to get what team would make life easier on you.

I thought the entire point of the waiver system is that the order of the waiver posts does not matter at all.

The suggestion was to go back to the mad rush for picks, but at a given time. Trust me, I've been known to have a post written and waiting for the "X has been kicked out." post so all I had to do was click "Submit Reply" and I had that good team. The waiver system was implemented so that that didn't happen any more. Now it doesn't matter if you get it in right after the person drops or right before the waiver closes.

Vikesrock 15-12-2010 19:37

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

Alex, I would be glad to take the Waiver Wire off your hands if you would like. If you want to hand it off just post here so people know who to send future request to and PM or email me whatever you have so far.

Personally, I have no problem with the mad dash, I've gotten way more than my fair share of great teams that way. I thought this may be a way to give more people a crack at some of the good teams that become available so people don't feel they have to check in every single night (provided they sent lists).

At the end of the drafting season we should definitely review this system and see if it should be kept, changed or scrapped.

ATannahill 15-12-2010 19:39

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

I'm fine with keeping the system (I'm all caught up). I am also keeping records so we can review it afterwards.

I think I am one of the people that over profited from the mad dashes. While I was depressed to see the waiver suggestion, I do think it is fairer.

Eric I have had the results ready on Sunday and sometimes Saturday. The problem with that is when people change a pick or their priorities. I usually won't do it until I am sure no one is getting kicked before Friday. Most of the madness has probably come down now.

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

way of making it simpler: no special instructions allowed

Example, your list has the following teams ranked
1
2
3
4
5

Currently your list looks like this

JVN...1....4...5

Both 2 and 3 are on waivers

Special instructions "I want 2 to replace 4, and 3 to replace 5. If I don't get 3, then I'd just like 2 to just replace 5. If I don't get 2, then I want 3 to replace 5."

Make you waiver picks one line, no if-then statements.

Suggestion 2: All Posts most be made in the Waivers thread, no PMs. This should reduce the number of posts to only the ones people really feel they need to make. Choose wisely, because you are alerting all others you think X team is worth your time.

While I don't feel drafts should be frozen immediately, I think we should use mechanisms that curb the urge to want free agents. As I have said before, I also dislike the madrush system. While I have had success at this method, I don't feel FF should be an every day game, but a game to do when you have time during the week.

On the no special instructions, there are times when they are necessary. For example, I'm trying to replace one of my teams with either of two teams from waivers, so I specify that only one is to be done. But keep them to a minimum; i.e., you want any of 5 teams to replace any of 2 teams, so you specify that...but your 1-1 trades, don't bother.

Or, the following format, if you're trying to add/drop multiple teams from a tier:
Add: X, Y, Z (in priority order)
Drop: A, B, C (also in priority order).

Open posts would also cut down on requests--if someone is higher on the list than you are, then there's a good chance you won't get team X that they put a claim in for unless they pick up team Y first. But you also want team Y... insert confusion here.

The other factor is that if you think X is worth your time, someone else might try to take them from you by putting in a claim. That's their prerogative--but if they do it right, they can box you out of a lot of potential points. I can see a way to box the entire draft out of a good team by using a sleeper/dark horse team as a foil. If open posting was mandated, I'd also suggest moving up draft lock times to waiver processing times because of that method.

I'm not sure this will help much. The primary driver behind not waivering every single team that's marginally better is moving down the list. The person with the most waiver claims each week ends up on the bottom of the list for the next week.

All requiring the posts to be public will do is make it so a bunch of people wait until the very last minute to post their requests.

I second Eric's motion to wait. At least 2 of these lists changed after you went through. 254 and probably others have been added to San Diego and 16 + others in Alamo. Many of the teams that were on waitlists are quite good and you are probably going to end up with claims equal to or greater than dropping another player.

I think next year we should start the drafting around December 15th.

ATannahill 17-12-2010 21:50

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

Chris, the problem is the number of events. Your talking about 50 events in less than a month with two holidays.

It is fine to start around December 1st if we realize that redrafts might be required.

EricH 18-12-2010 00:14

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

I'll say this: anything more than 2 drafts per day will be draining on everybody. Is it doable? Yes. Is it practical? No. With 50 events, that's 25 days-no redrafts, no "slack days", no breaks except for holidays. Anything during build season is not practical for other reasons.

However: The big "culprits" are MI events. Lots of good teams, lots of late shuffling. If the MI events, and the double regionals, are all drafted after 12/15 or the appropriate date next year, then I'd estimate 50% of the problem is gone right there.

The other option, which we might have to do eventually, is 3 drafts per day. If there is a rerun needed, and I can have a clear schedule, we could try that for one day, and one day only. In that case, I'd use the latest list I had, whether it was the original or a revised one.

Not that I'm suggesting it, but we really do have the personnel to do 4 or even 5 (I can run a draft) drafts at the same time.. Ridiculously confusing? Yes. Doable? Quite.

It's not the runners I'm particularly worried about, especially with the program we've got. We've got 4 regulars and a couple of others who have run drafts, so we could in a pinch run 4-6 drafts if we had to.

It's the folks submitting the lists. The last time I floated pulling a 3-a-day, there were complaints about it being too much pressure or something like that. Doing that for 3-4 weeks in a row could be a lot of pressure, especially if the draft runners don't get a day off and need to skip a day or two. That's why I'm suggesting a trial 3-a-day for a rerun--if it works out well, great, if not, we know that we can't do that.

ATannahill 18-12-2010 07:43

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

Along with MI and double events, we need to watch out for places like Washington or Texas that keep their team list hidden because of grants.

Just realized I lopped 20 off the last list I posted in this thread for BAE Tier 1. It should be:

They were on the previous list from Alex and posted in the list in the tier so they should still be able to be processed this week I think.

I definitely can't speak for everyone, but I would not participate in the future if it was 3-a-day. I don't have 3 hours a day to spend making lists, and I'm sure that the current college kids don't have time either (not to mention that I'm already wondering how I'm going to get 12 lists done before the 26th, when I leave to go visit family for 3 days).

I'm fine with any number of redrafts as long as we adjust the waiver priority list accordingly.

I will note that we shouldn't necessarily feel compelled to redraft any events. In previous years the same adds and drops occured and the teams were awarded to whoever noticed them soonest, so we're "more fair" than that regardless of what we do.

The other events have many many teams in them. WPI's three teams are 40, 190, and 195 among others

ATannahill 23-12-2010 16:02

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

Excluding my requests, these are the events with the most requests after about a day.

Lone Star (4)
San Diego (3)
WPI 2 (3)
Oklahoma, Alamo 1, Alamo 2, Boilermaker 1 and Pittsburgh 2 each have 2.

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

For redraft, let's plan on the top 3 for now (24th, 26th, and some other day, possibly 31st or 1st) and do the rest if they get up there.

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

If you want me to go ahead and request 48, 1038, and 3138 for Pittsburgh I can go do that to push that count up, but considering all of these teams were Finalists or better last year and one of them made it to Einstein i wouldn't say it's unreasonable to include that.

Only reason I didn't request was because I thought we were redrafting...

Heads up that Alamo, SD, Sacramento, and Dallas are not being redrafted.

Do people think these events should be included tonight or next week since we never official announced a redraft?

I can't see the potential harm in waiting another week for those specific waivers. I'd prefer it this way but if I'm the only one I'll hustle and get 'em all in...

I'm with Barry.

Note that they're all over the minimum time, but I'm sure some folks wouldn't mind an extra day or two. The events mentioned in the Registration thread all have yet to be drafted, so I don't think there are too many teams out there for waiver.

Speaking of which, results will probably be held until tomorrow.

Per 78, can we just pretend I never submitted a waiver request, and give me back 2836? Or is that not really the way things go?

If not, then

I would be fine with that (read: you can ignore my request for the team if you do that)

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

I have an idea I would like to submit. In the case of San Diego and Conneticut, where someone is missing a team and there are teams on wire.

The person missing a team can pull from the pile. Otherwise they can grab a team off of waiver but go to the bottom of the waiver list.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but why not make it a regular waiver pick, but give priority to players trading away a team that dropped. if it's the same, I could definitely see that as the most reasonable solution.

That's the way originally suggested--players missing teams go higher on the list in those tiers.

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

Awright, here's the scoop.

Ed is missing 2673 in Detroit.
Basel already noticed 78's absence.
dodar should notice 568's absence from San Diego shortly.

Other than those three and Barry (548, West MI 2), nobody's missing any teams to my knowledge.

They can grab any available team, waiver or no, in that tier. Should that team be on the waiver list, they go to the bottom of the list; otherwise, the list doesn't change. The missing team takes precedence over any waiver claims submitted. Is that fair enough for everyone?

Note: If no claim is made by someone missing a team before waivers are processed, then all waiver claims are valid and will be processed accordingly.

If not, then
Connecticut: 2836 for 78

You get 2836 in CT and go to bottom of the waiver list.

Re: [FF]: Season Long Waiver Discussion

Seattle is getting a large realignment. It may be that GTR is as well, but that's neither here nor there.

It may be reasonable to deal with the realignment differently than standard procedure. Here's what I'm thinking:

Should a player have a team that they would like to keep switch events, they get first claim for that team in the event switched to. If there are two such teams in a player's alliances, one at each event, they may simply be traded between events. If a player doesn't choose to keep a team that switches, they can indicate that and use the missing teams priority (which would be second to the switching events priority).

Thoughts?

I don't feel like going through the event list and finding added teams. Will someone be willing to do this before midnight?
