I can't remember which team it was, but at Championships, there was a team with 2 rock 'em sock 'em robot mascots made out of cardboard.

Idk man...while our school is pretty nice about letting students use the equipment with moderate freedom, they bring down the hammer when something goes wrong...

I agree! While moving around Galelio I remember seeing that elaborate costume walking around and cheering! That was most definitely one of the more noticible mascots!

Here's a thread about the 'spirit catcher':

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=85486

It's their version of a Mummer.

Very clever marketing:
Eye-catching, play on the word, spirit: spirit catcher - and if asked about their mascot, they have a wonderful way of introducing some of the history of the community that they are a part of and recognizing it. Really amazing work that only MOE can do.

Was even worse with the previous version of the Spirit Catcher -a giant gear- when I build it originally in 2003. (Picture here) to replace the original Uppet (Picture Here) which while perfect for the Rutgers Gym and Epcot... was a little too tall for Drexel and the other venues we went to. We also had the short lived giant MOE stick (Empty Costume Here) along with a couple other short-lived designs.

The new downsizing/upgrade of the Spirit Catcher was totally in the hands of the students who found it's remains in storage and decided to fix it up and happily paraded it around at competitions so kudos go totally to them.

Its not so much the mascot costume as it is the man in the suit!! for instance, our teams is really just a knight costume. pretty boring. but when u put somebody charasmatic in the suit, u get a pretty awesome mascot. for instance, we've had the knight that wouldnt stop dancing in the costume until he got sick from heat exhaustion, we've had the knight who made it his goal to knight 195 people before the end of a competition, we've had the knight who broke the bleachers at a competition by leading teams to stomp and jump as hard as they can....

personally, i like team beta's mascot

Their is a lot of good mascots at competition.

NJ has a lot of GREAT mascots. (Not tooting my own horn...)

But what constitute as a good mascot? Is it just the suit or is it the person in the suit?

A little bit of both I believe.
You can have a great person inside the outfit but the initial response of the people watching is important.
(E.g. One mascot I know of caused some little kids to cry just because the outfit was rather terrifying.)

Conversely you can have a good costume but if the person inside isn't willing to go out of his/her comfort zone things can get dull quickly.

Right now I think this thread is going for overall best mascot; one that looks good and makes a good impact on people watching.
:p

Well, I've made a few kids cry but after a hug and dance they stop rather quickly... (yay full body gorilla suit!)

I find it hard to say who is the best mascot because of how many of them (and knowing a lot of them) and seeing I am a mascot.

Re: Best Mascot

One of the best parts of being in a mascot suit is you can be someone else without the world knowing who's inside of the suit. But, it doesn't hurt to put someone inside the suit who acts spirit filled outside of it too!

As far as the Thread, it can be any of the three. Best costume, best person in costume, or the awesome overall best.
